Shannon ward is for Covid patients. It's all very well dealt with tbf. They've increased ICU capacity so again all isolated.

23 new cases of Covid-19 in Galway – 767 nationwide and 2 deaths

The 2 deaths are from last month.

Shannon ward - can't say I've heard of it. Never came across it on the main ward block.

    Whereabouts is it situation?

The figure I look at is the number per 100,000. Ireland is now under 230 - not long ago we were over 300. This puts us in the bottom third in Europe.

In Galway, we've fallen from fifth to seventh, as the NUIG/GMIT/Moycullen superspreader events burn themselves out through being unable to spread anymore.

    Good to see.

It does mean the pubs won't reopen for ages as we just can't be trusted with alcohol

    Pubs weren't the problem, though.

Close the offies. Open the pubs, restaurants and churches.

The HSE even published a case associated with Taylor's, i think it was, where someone with covid infected about 30 people a lot of whom they met in pubs and restaurants, and we've all seen videos and photos or what went in in moycullen.

Pubs themselves aren't the issue but the behaviour in them is.

    Mayo will be okay so.

    22 cases today

    From the conference :

We are doing good but reminded we are now only at same case numbers as when level 5 was first mooted by Nephet in Oct. We still really need to stick with it.

Reproduction number almost on target right now for us to come out of lockdown in 4 weeks time. We need cases to drop on average 8% everyday for the next 2 weeks.

All age demographics currently represented in ICU. Not exclusively older people.

It's our relationship with alcohol that's the issue. Be it confirmations, gaa finals, Freshers week , birthdays, weddings, etc we have a culture of gathering together and drinking . It's not just a gaa thing.

The median age of confirmed Covid cases in Co. Galway is lower than anywhere else in the Republic, new CSO stats reveal.

The median age of all cases across the country since the start of the pandemic is 39.

But there are huge differences between the counties. In Galway the median age is 25 – by far the lowest in the country.

    ...

The new CSO data (28 February to 30 October) shows that from 2,333 confirmed cases in Galway, 17 people have died.

    ...

On 21 August, before students returned to schools and colleges, Galway also had the lowest median age in the country.

However on 21 August, the median age of cases in Galway was 39.

270 cases today and less than 5 in Galway. I know it's only Monday numbers but I'll drink to that!

What is the situation around Galway regarding the flu vaccine? I know there's a shortage of the vaccine this year and I know some people who haven't received the vaccine yet. They are hoping to get the vaccine yet. Are GP surgeries and pharmacies still out from the vaccine?

The laboratory at Galway University Hospitals has begun COVID-19 testing using a new high-throughput molecular PCR machine. The new equipment will enable the laboratory to process up to 500 swabs from patients per day, with a turnaround of approximately three hours per batch. .

    ...

With the new equipment, we will know if the patients have the virus much sooner and this will help us to plan their care and make sure that they are admitted to the appropriate ward. We have started to test all adult patients for COVID-19 when they are admitted, even those who show no symptoms. The additional capacity to meet the increased demand is absolutely necessary at this time and will support streaming of patients to the correct pathway.

Good news for us all in terms of keeping our hospitals as safe as possible for everyone.

National and county numbers going the right directions. A lot of deaths announced today but not necessarily from the past 24 hours.
Unfortunately the high cases numbers and uncontrolled community spread a few weeks ago were always going to result in higher mortality. Hopefully the numbers keep coming down at the rate they have been.

We're only a few days into November so 14 deaths is far too much. May they all RIP.

And it's 14 on top of all that have already been announced. It's surprisingly large amount. Numbers in ICU have not been changing greatly. I wonder if it's nursing home patients.

    On an individual level, RIP.

But population wise, we're 1/3 of the way through the month.

In Q4 2019, 7639 people died of all causes. That's on average 2500 people per month. It's likely that many who died of Covid would have died of something else anyway.
