FWIW, Cork City forum has the one COVID thread and has done so throughout and it's been fine.

Ya its not like this thread is busy, I check in every few days and easy to keep up so agree and keeping a single thread.

I assume you mean here rather than in PM?

I think merging chat made full sense as it was the same issue, but the openings and closings are a separate issue. If someone posts numbers or city incidence rate and someone else immediately asks about why x cafe is closed attracting answers from they're moving/they're renovating/they're closing it means important info can get lost. I don't think many people want to scroll through pages of chat on two separate things everyday.

I find it a valuable resource as it is, means I can alter behaviour when I hear things are bad or good, and there's no where else really with this level of local info.

The forum overall is very quiet too, it's nearly nice to have two threads to look at that are active. The opening and closing one is the light relief thread to look at to me.

Surely news can be read or heard from media sources rather than this thread if people need to know things in a hurry. Not everyone is that fear based around Covid that they need to know if Johnny and Mary down the road have it or not either. Keep it as is I say.

Seeing Angela Merkel suggesting schools should close from the 16th in Germany and people should stay home for the week leading up to Christmas Day. A school in Claremorris is closing from today due to spike in the community there. Saw there has been several clusters linked to schools in Galway recently too.

Begs the question if schools should close in Galway until after the holidays.

Makes sense Mayo is just up the road.

Not Covid related thank goodness but a reminder of our limited healthcare capacity and the importance of taking extra care so we can all be treated regardless of the issue come January.
We are doing great atm, hopefully we can keep it up.

University Hospital Galway reports extreme crowding today
University Hospital Galway is extremely busy today, with limited bed capacity and long waits at the A&E Saolta has said.

“We regret that patients are currently experiencing long waiting times to be admitted from the Emergency Department to an acute bed in the hospital.”

“We have a high number of patients waiting for admission on trollies in the ED and in both the Acute Medical Unit and Acute Surgical Unit, which we apologise for.”

“We know these delays are very difficult for our patients and their families,” a statement from the Saolta Hospital Group said.

People should only visit the Emergency Department in the event of real emergencies, and that people should contact their GP or the WestDoc GP out if hours service in the first instance.

Kind of wondering what there are so many people attending with given there is no official reports of flu.

Here we go again, I thought it would take longer, particularly as numbers here seem low and we had zero in hospital last time I looked.
There has been an increase in the number of COVID-19 patients hospitalised in Galway, and those who have been admitted to the ICU.

As of 8pm on Friday night there were 12 confirmed cases at UHG, but just 1 at Portiuncula, Ballinasloe.

Of the known patients being treated at University Hospital Galway, two are in the Intensive Care Unit.

However there is just one suspected case among Galway hospital patients, at UHG.

Number are still quite low in Galway.

We'll be back with restrictions soon enough anyway.

GUH has unfortunately exploded with Covid in the last week. Delays in A&E are due to a shortage of NCHD's due to being either Covid+ or a close contact. Ward closures including St. Annes, AMU and St. Gerards. Unless you have a life or death reason to visit GUH please stay away.

    Confirmed by GBFM:
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Galway hospitals is continuing to rise rapidly.

18 coronavirus patients are being treated here today – that’s up from 14 yesterday and six this day last week.

It’s also the highest daily figure since the start of November.

All 18 patients are being treated at UHG

This might be a stupid question, but what does 'ward closures' mean - not admitting any new patients into the ward, yeah?

While Galway had 15 cases yesterday, our 14-day incidence rate per 100K is 51.5. By contrast, Donegal, Louth and Kilkenny are all over 200.

Have any pubs in town closed for good? I've heard of a few staying shut until next summer.

I guess most will struggle on. There are government supports available to help keep them afloat. As we've seen from the past few weeks, there's a pent up demand for people to socialise so I suppect they are relying on a bumper late season next year.

Regular pubs won't be open for a long time again I'd imagine.

Heard from a member of ICU staff that 10 of their unit has it. Not good.

I'm just curious as I read a lot of posts on boards from people whingeing about how unfairly the pubs have been treated and how this is going to be detrimental to them yet as far as I'm aware no pubs in Galway have actually gone bust. Just wondering if that is actually the case or not.

The government is paying people not to work. Afaik there is also extra help for publicans too. Once these payments cease you'll see plenty of places closing I'd imagine.

E Brun, Paddy's (lease was up) and Tribeton.

Rumours say licensees of some wet pubs have handed in their keys. No facts re which ones though.

The payments are continuing until next April, if they aren't extended beyond that, by then a lot of people will be vaccinated and the gov might be looking at less restrictions (hopefully)

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,208 ✭✭✭saabsaab

They need to co-ordinate the vaccine roll out carefully. As many as possible at the same time to break the transmission and not allow a resistant variant develop by doing it slowly and in drips and drabs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 672 ✭✭✭Ashleigh1986

They should use galway airport as a " vaccine center ".
    Open it from 9am to 9pm 7 days a week .
    A drive tru ...
Have a load of bays ...
Get your appointment / get it done ...reopen the country .
Listening to a nurses manager on the radio the last day ...
Sweet Jesus the way she was talking you would swear a nurse had never given a vaccine before .
Just do your job ... What you are paid to do and what you were trained to do .
Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill .

This is not good enough. We’re throwing money at the wrong areas. Our healthcare staff have enough challenges. Now a huge outbreak, a hospital down staff and the a&e pushed back.
