I would question the safety of buses for the most vulnerable and frail, both in terms of getting on and off unaided without anyone standing close offering an arm, and in terms of air circulation on a bus. Doesn't sound ideal for older people.

Kind of back to my original thought: additional, reserved services just for older people who are heading out to get vaccinated. Reduced capacity, open windows, possible a staff nurse on board & their nurses / staff at the race course to aid people moving.

The vaccination centres are in addition to GP surgerys and other "in the community" locations that are also being lined up for vaccinations.
I would assume that "older" people and those in positions where they were unable to attend a big centre for one reason or another, will be prioritised at their GP's or local providor (this is what I have read anyway)

So nuts that they're building anything when there are so many vacant hotels and churches and community centres - why not throw money towards hotels in particular for rental? Some have enormous conference/wedding rooms.

To be honest, I am surprised that they need to add any additional indoor space to the race course as the two stands are pretty big, you'd think that there would be enough indoor space there to manage.

I'd say using hotels and community centres and the like for "smaller" centres out the country wouldn't be a bad idea - weren't there some "issues" raised on it though - cant recall completely.

There's race week buses too (that go into the center of the track) but there's a very regular service that serves the business parks at Parkmore. This is actually cut back during race week!

It's not. The number of buses us the same, and actually boosted at times. But they cannot go beyond Briarhill for a couple of hours each day at peak traffic time. But that by-the-by.

I've heard that the army will be helping transport some elderly people, I'd expect in smaller buses than BE own.

I'd expect that there is "construction " because they want to keep people sheltered but in hyperventillated spaces for as long as possible. I was horrified at some of the pics of GP vaccination clinics, wayyy too many people in a room for my liking.

TBH, that's probably the main reason for the additional marquees etc - so it does make sense.

    Not a chance.

He won't resign, he won't go to jail, but he will ...

    ... get re-elected.

NUIG advice - 'worrying evidence' is code for ??
A Public Health Risk Assessment had been undertaken and many close contacts of known cases were identified. While most of our students continue to observe the rules for the sake of their own health and that of their friends and families, there is worrying evidence of socialising between places of residence or households in breach of the public health advice.

"Worrying evidence" should mean chuck them out of the Uni.

Yes, wasn't there supposed to be an NUIG code of conduct around adherence to covid guidelines? Wasn't breaching it meant to mean you were shown the door?

We do have a city, people and an economy to protect, this isn't a playground for kids to live out the glory years at the expense of others. I would have zero sympathy for them.

Details weren't made public, but reading between the lines there was a lot of push back, possibly mass refusal to sign it.

Especially where people are in private accommodation I'm not sure how much control the college has on students behaviour when not in public places.

Great distraction from the painfully slow vaccine role out. Media will be all over this story.

The Garda investigation and file sent to the DPP was also painfully slow.

That's really unfortunate. A case of people moving in to a city from outside to misbehave and cause infections.

“ Students at GMIT have been warned by Gardaí that there will be checks at the bus and train stations to ensure compliance with the 5km travel rule – as the HSE warned today of increasing numbers testing positive for Covid-19 in the Galway City student outbreaks.”

Mandatory quarentine in hotels is not yet setup as far as I am aware, however there's a fair few Irish that deserve to be locked up judging by the below excerpt from the rte article linked above
Meanwhile, close to 8,000 fines have been issued by gardaí to people in breach of Covid-19 restrictions, with more than 6,500 of these issued for non-essential travel.

Up to close of business yesterday, 7,950 fines had been issued for breaches of public health regulations.

A total of 6,297 €100 fines had been issued for non-essential travel, with a further 263 €500 fines for non-essential journeys to ports and airports.

Nearly 200 fines for €500 have been issued to people for organising a house party, with another 747 €150 fines issued to people attending such parties.

More than 155 €80 fines have been issued to people for not wearing face coverings.

Gardaí have said that 620 court prosecutions have been initiated to date for those in breach of the regulations, following consultation with the DPP.

Fines for non-essential cross-border travel came into place 11 days ago, and latest traffic data shows a 23% decrease in cross-border travel last weekend compared to previous weekends.

Gardaí have said they are continuing to find groups of people gathering in large groups, and that while the majority of people believe that they are doing the right thing, the reality is that the level of casual contacts remains high.
