Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. I quoted the important part below

Every country’s epidemic trajectory (except SK) is on track to become Italy epidemic level within a matter of 1-2 weeks at this current pace

Unless we can ramp up behaviour modification awareness among more and more people. Simply has to happen

Even if that comes to pass, it still doesn't tell us a huge amount.

All it tells us is that 10k out of 60m are infected.....(that would translate as less than 1k cases in the Republic if we get to March 10th Italy level).

It's the next 4-6 weeks or so that needs to be very closely watched in Italy.

You'd have to imagine that the custom of kissing cheeks as a greeting in Italy has had some effect on the spread of the virus at least in the early stages (as the practice has been suspended).

Italy is doing a lot better today
Significant drop in new cases and new deaths

    Maybe.

But Italians are generally a pretty healthy people. They have a good diet and a good healthcare system.
    Heavy smokers, like the Chinese.

A large increase In new deaths you mean?

Thankfully a large drop in new cases though, maybe their containment is starting to work.

So all the confirmations around the country are about to start.

Have the church decided on the prudent move to postpone all confirmations that are upcoming?

First post trying to blame the corona virus on RCC. Good effort.

It’s amazing that on the 6th and 7th of March they had a decrease in cases.
Did they put on any restrictions?

5 using indices of 1.235, 7 would require 1.292 way outside worldwide (-China) range.

Could it possibly be there's a lot of smokers in Italy?

    same as anywhere in EU
Italy has a lot of infected, more than the HSE can handle thus a lot of poeple can't avail of intensive care and die, that is the explanation
The death rate will change once HSE reaches full capacity

China's over 60 population is probably more healthy than Europe.

Italy's death rate is far worse

I think Italy's death rate is so bad because the health services are on the brink of collapse and cannot handle the volume of cases which is having a terrible impact.

I've read some harrowing reports regarding the choices doctors are making. We really all need to pay attention and embrace social distancing, & hygiene as guided by the HSE.

I believe for Italy to have so many deaths, the must have 60-70 thousand cases not confirmed.

I think we'll have 4 or 5 new cases. We're tracking pretty close to the UK's numbers per capita, and they had a 17% increase this morning.

Italy doesn't have the capacity to handle the number of infected people
If the over 65 patients are not admitted to hospital it means they are going to die thus the high number of deaths

The terrifying aspect of the Italian death rate so far.
Is these deaths are in addition to all other causes.

Stroke, accident, cardiac arrest, aneurysm and myriad other every day events that bring patients to hospital where sometimes, they can be saved by appropriate support and intervention.

Those patients are now also dying because Covid-19 has a stranglehold on ICU beds and urgent care medics.

The adjusted death rate including all other causes in affected areas at the moment must be fúcking horrific.

But what about freedom of movement? I thought their hands are tied? It's an internal border but?

Who are they going to complain to? There is no one that’s going to listen to any silly wanker that thinks they have a case to take to Europe challenging a countries decision to close its borders. They’d have zero support.

You need to look up medical statistics and how they’re reported on a Monday versus the weekend.

theres always going to be a lag in the cases. If you think about it, and measures put in place today will take up to 14 days to feed through into the daily numbers (14 day incubation period).

So what did the Italians do 10 odd days ago? First lockdowns started around about 21st Feb...and that lockdowns only grew since then.

Hopefully they will start getting lower amounts of daily cases from now on in.
Still think they are looking at a spike in the south in about 2 weeks though (all the northerns that got wind of the impending quarantine and headed south).

Or theyve slowed testing and people have slowed presenting given stuff that has been published recently 're capacity issues in Italy's healthcare

I hope I'm wrong and they have slowed spread
