Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Re the whole army thing ....

Only my two cents. But I think it's true.

If you are shutting down the country you have to have them on stand by.

Testing has been underway in a number of countries. There was an ad for a U.K. lab looking for test volunteers to be infected with the virus

Someone posted earlier re: difficulties in getting test done as did not meet the criteria for travel \ close contact.
Can't find the original post but bumping this.

The National Public Health Emergency Team has changed the threshold for Covid-19 testing. It had been the case that if people had returned from an at-risk area and had symptoms, they were to contact their GP. Now, the at-risk area is no longer a condition and if people have symptoms, they should contact their GP. This is expected to result in a big rise in testing.

    Here's one I made earlier.(3 days ago)
Based on that we are probably about 2 weeks behind Italy. That's not a long time. Why don't we have the balls to implement some of the measures that have proven to work in containing this thing. Doing the four stage strategy. I know the government has started to address the problem but more is needed if we are to avoid the same fate. We have decided not to test enough people (criteria is ridiculously narrow) because the test might come back positive and we wouldn't be able to isolate everyone. The net effect is we let it go undetected and hit the wave when it comes. It's out there now and spreading.

The incubation period / asymptomatic cases / longevity on surfaces mean that this thing goes under the radar.

A wave hits and by then it's too late.
wait and see does not work
it spreads readily in the community (even with hand washing)
    hospitals will get overwhlemed
    people will die
testing is needed for all suspected cases or complete community isolation
the economic cost is far greater if we doing nothing

    Easier to be first

200 more cases in the U.K., 800 now.
Risk level to the British public has risen to 'high'.
This is lower than most other European countries who's national risk level has recently risen to very high

Good to see our Northern comrades putting pressure on UK to follow suit. I really hope they unilaterally just do it and take their own steps.

That sounds a bit weird

How can they put pressure on the UK if they're already in the UK? Unless you left the sentence half finished, meaning the UK Government?

Anyway, I thought it was only Michelle O'Neill who had change of heart overnight. Yesterday the executive were all happy to tow the Boris line (leaving the schools open) with the rest of the UK

The advice is if you have symptoms don't ring a doctor don't ask for a test.

Essentially the fingers in the ears and repeat lalalala measures of fighting a virus.

Italy is the only country in Europe who has a chance to reverse their situation
France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland look really bad, what restrictions have they implemented?

Belgium goes much further than any other Country except Italy

all these measures apply till 3 April:

    • stop to all leisure and sport activities
    • closing schools, universities, restaurants and bars
    • non essential shops open only weekdays
    • essential shops (food and chemists) open weekdays and Saturdays
    • public transport business as usual
    • creches stay open

    Shutting down stuff is pointless.

Supermarkets are just giant gatherings now.

Perfect conditions to spread a virus.

well the supermarkets are gonna have to post signs outside their shop saying Warning, no coronavirus allowed in here and have snipers on standby to shoot it on sight. :)

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

interesting they kept creches open but not schools - wonder what the rationale for that was.

Whats he saying and why is there a body in the room?

He's a man from Naples (the accent is from Naples). He's saying he's making that video for letting the whole country know what happened.

He said his sister died the day before, likely for the Covid-19, but so far he didn't receive any support or help from the authorities.
He asks not to show the clip to elderly people and kids, because it is very hard.
His sister lies dead in the bed, but he can't bury her because he's been left alone by everybody, health authorities included.
He asked the test for her sister and is waiting for the result. He asked the test for himself, but his request was rejected. He says that in the attempt to keep her sister alive he practiced mouth-to-mouth ventilation, so he could be a carrier of the virus, but nobody cares about it.
He says his sister had other health issues, but their GP didn't care at all.
He closes the message with the words that he can hardly breath for the pain, and that his sister has been lying in that bed dead for 23 hours at the time of the video.

    Hope it helps.

Leaving schools open means its likely to spread more rapidly not less so.

That's what they did in Italy for a while, left the schools open, and everything open.

Essentially, the UK has decided to follow the early Italian model. We all know how that turned out. Eventually the Italians saw it didn't work because the spread was too rapid and overwhelmed them.

I'd prefer the Chinese approach and at the moment our approach. Slow the spread down as much as possible. The UK seem intent on speeding it up. This means the peak of their curve will come much sooner and will last much longer with more people sick in hospital.

How would it last longer if the survivors of the mild illness became immune and then stopped the spread to the at risk group?

Leaving the schools open was judged to have a minor effect, I’d be worried about closing schools and leaving work places open meaning that children would be cared for by those at home and at risk groups like grand parents.
