Just for perspective, those are simple surgical masks and before they got sold out Boots were charging 10 euros for a box of 50 (3M branded).

Not saying people shouldn’t buy these - but these guys are making a killing her for what isn’t even the full protective thing.

Sh1t, I bought them before seeing your post. Better to have them than not I suppose.

I don't know if posted already, must've jumped about fifteen pages there but nine new cases for Ireland bring total up to 43 and 1 death.

    This thread is frankly disgusting.

A bunch of psychos posting lad-in-hand about doomsday scenarios and stuff they heard from someone on Facebook.

So much misinformation and outright bull****. This will be looked back on in the same way as Y2K, peak-oil, SARS etc. A "crisis" completely created by the media and idiots who love a bit of misery porn.

Stop reading it then or at least stop creating new accounts to post.

Were you even alive in the year 2000? Because there was a **** load of work done to prevent it becoming the crisis it could have, like what's happening now.

    The answer is no.

In times of crisis we are all gonna have to suck it up and do things we are not happy about.

Have your seen what's happening in Italy? And what's rapidly happening in Germany, France and Spain? Christ just put on the PSG-Dortmund game tonight and that should give you a sense of this.

So you are predicting the future ?

The World Health Organization and the world's expert Epidemiologists and Virologists also do not know exactly what the future will bring... BUT they are making really well educated guesses based on the mathematical modeling and their unrivaled experience of previous viral epidemics.

Given a choice between the opinions of the scientific community and your prediction, I know who I will believe.

    2) Closing schools will NOT stop community transfer among the young. Having kids and young adults without anything to do for perhaps 6 months is a very bad idea. They will still congregate, it will foster anti social behaviour, uncontrollable contact with God knows who and possibly lead to other undesirable effects, criminality, STDs or pregnancies, abuse, bullying of minorities associated with the origins of the outbreak.

We shouldn't just accept bad parents who have zero control over their kids and build society around that.

Maybe in a minority here, but I feel the Government responses and HSE effort have been commendable. We were the first country to announce a big investment in the problem. Traces have been fully mapped out and they have easily managed to find connections. Finding connections is a very easy way to prevent further spreading.

More cases will happen but I'm satisfied with the level of response the bodies have enacted upon.

And of course a big shoutout to the people out the fronts of it all. Doing a great job imo.
While their actions may have been reasonable, I think the HSE/Gov't's communication has been poor. They consistently downplayed it and tried to keep everything shrouded in mystery and suggested it was all under control. I'm relieved to see them admitting its seriousness and being a little more open.

I wish I had your confidence in their tracing.

But 100% agreed on props to the front-liners. Don't think anyone (reasonable) would have a bad word to say about them.

In my opinion, and only in my personal opinion, closing schools and colleges is a mistake. Why?

    1) Young people themselves are not susceptible to the most severe effects

    2) Closing schools will NOT stop community transfer among the young. Having kids and young adults without anything to do for perhaps 6 months is a very bad idea. They will still congregate, it will foster anti social behaviour, uncontrollable contact with God knows who and possibly lead to other undesirable effects, criminality, STDs or pregnancies, abuse, bullying of minorities associated with the origins of the outbreak. Obviously I don't mean all kids, but enough, and our authorities are going to have too much on their plate to deal with it.

    3) Have them in school and college, teach and implement daily hygiene routines and remove any students or teachers who are immunocompromised.

I’m glad you’re not in charge. You know kids can spread it around? Kids don’t factor in the death stats much but this will still make them. Why give the virus a perfect. Bullying of minorities this must be a joke. If it is you got me.

We have a large reading list of books bought at Christmas to catch up on and many other pursuits to enjoy - I would happily encourage others who can do this, (retirees, homeworkers etc) to settle in - hopefully it will all be under control soon but at least it you're isolated - you're safe.

How safe they can feel needs a bit of a qualification. They can feel safe if they're stocked up to hunker down and ride out the peak of this thing with no contact with other people. However, if they need to get out and do a bit of shopping, like most will, or if they're being checked up on by relatives & friends, who may be trying to get them the things they need during this period, then this all introduces a risk. And because so many people are clearing the shelves of things like hand sanitiser and certain foods, this increases their need of supplies, thus increasing the need to shop or get things brought in.

Have elective surgery’s been cancelled I though I saw a post saying that but can’t find it now my partner has a surgery scheduled in 13 days and we haven’t heard anything but want to be prepared if it is.
I imagine it would depend on the hospital and the procedure.

Call the hospital to check, and maybe call again in a week.

Things are moving very quickly. Its hard to know what changes will be made.

Just to say as a primary teacher we have received no information from the department regards closing. It's just assumed that we will be told to close but there has been nothing from any official organisation. Well we havent received anything anyway.

    Your principal has.

What’ll we give out about then when the schools close

Ah you know, large gatherings all around the city, exhibitions, conferences, GAA matches in Croker on Sunday, (and others around the country in case I am lynched), BIG things going on in the Conference Centre, concerts, pubs, public transport etc. there is no limit to what we will support to stall this thing. ;)

We're not. We're trying to mitigate an emergency and I think you would agree now is not the time to teach civics to the irresponsible.

Besides, plenty of good kids have been led to do bad things when unsupervised, and many people will have to continue to work.

I’m not immunocompromised, but I’m a part time carer for two people who are. I have seriously curtailed any social activities in order to reduce my risk. By your definition, I should still work.
