Exercise does not seem squeezed in or forced anymore. People are running, walking and cycling for fun now and enjoying their surroundings more. We will certainly have a fitter and leaner nation in 2020.

Identity politics seems to have tamped down a bit, thank fook. There’s a lot less articles about it mainly because the current crisis has highlighted how frivolous and navel-gazing it all is.

Not sure if this has been posted here already or not, but getting to know one's locality and neighbours. People stop and want to chat now, are friendly and helpful. The rat race has been paused and people are taking a breath.

i am feeling a lot of positives tbh.. even though part of me feels bad for saying that - seeing as so many have and are suffering as a result of it..

I am well - as are my loved ones,.. I don't have money worries..

While I miss my family and friends I can talk to them on the phone and via video call etc..
There are a lot of pass times I miss but I now have time to engage in a lot of hobbies which I could never find time for before.. walking - with my eyes more open I find.. listening to more interesting podcasts, watching certain movies, reading more...

    Chores.. admin etc..

But most of all I am loving the peace of it - before this life was so busy.. I didn't like it.. I have realised that I prefer a slower pace of life.. and quiet time..

It has also made me see and experience a kinder side of human nature,. in some instances, that is nice to see..

I would like to think that when things go back to pre virus states, that I will manage to keep some of the positives - and that others will do same..

    We shall see..

For now, I am enjoying being in the now

Main positives are I have, after 2 months, completely eliminated my bad habit of nose picking and nail biting ðŸ˜

This for me too. I have never been so relaxed. The thoughts of having to make eye contact with certain people again doesn't bear thinking about.

miss my mates and family but not missing all the time pressures associated with regular life... loving being able to just enjoy my own time.. taking time for self care... feel more rested.. brighter - more fresh..

I am talking to loved ones on the phone a lot - i find it bridges the gap..

but I am loving the slower pace of life for sure...

and loving the low maintenance.. not having to get all dollied up for nights out etc..

would love a manicure though lol (nails grow so fast and hard - difficult for me to file) grr - 1st world probs..

no cars in popular walking areas, one near me is the walk down to the poolbeg lighthouse, the road that goes around the powerstation and down to the pier walk, is now just a nice space for walkers and cyclists , they should consider closing it permanently or at the weekend even and get rid of the car parks.

Managed to save a good bit of money for the first time ever really. Appreciate that I am very lucky to still have a job on full salary and understand a lot of people aren’t that lucky. But I have managed to also pay off a stupidly large overdraft I took out about two years ago which was basically to fund a social life I realistically couldn’t afford and have struggled to get out of the red most months since. Lesson learned!

Also I’ve quite enjoyed the easy pace. Before lockdown like many I was burning the candle at both ends- trying to rush out the door at work for stuff on in the evenings, living for the weekend, counting down the days to pay day, weddings, leaving dos, family events....

For me anyways its been a chance to hit the reboot button.

Delighted the door to door salesmen (electricity/gas/phone/charity etc) has gone for now. Now I know that when the doorbell rings I’m 100% guaranteed that it’s another amazon delivery instead of having to tell the usual salesmen that I have zero interest in whatever they are trying to sell! What a time to be alive!

Same! I just cleared a 2k balance on my credit card and most of a personal loan. I will be debt free tomorrow 2 weeks when I make my final payment on that :) Between petrol and pet sitter alone I probably saved 150 a week, then parking, the odd coffee and sandwich before lectures at night - all adds up. With the shops closed and nowhere to go there hasn't really been much to spend money on except food!

Being able to work at home for the last 2 months of pregnancy has been a blessing I could not have even dreamed of - the flexibility, lunchtime naps, taking the dog out if I have a spare half hour etc.

More people likely to ditch animals as a source of food. The meat and dairy industries are being obliterated with the crisis and the covid19 infection emanating from a market with animals produce doesn't do it any favours. Massive bailouts needed to sustain it but I don't think it is sustainable in any event.

The Guardian lending its voice to the cause of rethinking out relationship with animals as a source of food is great to see https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/may/19/its-time-to-get-used-to-eating-less-meat?CMP=share_btn_fb&fbclid=IwAR3C18HfbjhwA17gUcY-zdakxdfS3apJTtzkq6L9EJxmQlWcft9xkFQISMk

Small vegan food businesses in Dublin have been continuing to open for takeaway the past few weeks and have been very busy, I've also noticed better vegan food ranges in supermarkets.

i doubt it , ireland is so far behind the curve on this even in dublin although its way ahead of the rest of teh country , possibly a culture thing.

cant think of much good out of this apart from maybe people will stop complaining about the national broadband plan

    ???
That's a big generalisation to make:)

The finest vegetarian restaurant in the country (by a stretch) is well outside Dublin. Very long and well established and waiting list every night of the week. Paradiso* in Cork. Yes, my opinion, but I know my sh1t;)

There is huge scope for Irish people eating a lot less meat. I don't know the statistics but I would I would say it has already begun. The media like to zone in on the polarising and aggressive vegan versus meat tirade but in the background people are quietly choosing for themselves.
One doesn't need to stop eating meat altogether in order to make a positive change on health/animal welfare/environmental degradation etc.

    * edit. Before Ichigo Ichi opened in Cork, I would say Paradiso was the best restaurant in Ireland, meat eateries included. I miss living in Cork, great food. Now living in Dublin so I've yet to sample all of its delights but I'm (was!) getting there.

why would people ditch animals as food ?

if people in this country had animals on their land in the 1840s there would have been no famine . the last thing this country would ever want to do is go back to a failed practice that that would put so many lives at risk if the weather turned bad

ive eaten in paradiso iyers and quay coop in cork all fine restaurants, i live in a touristy area and the veggie/vegan food offerings are pretty poor. dublin is ok (sova vegan butcher anyone ? amazing) but the place i was amazed at for veggie food was gdansk warsaw and krakow in poland, you were tripping up over vegie restaurants, cafes and burger bars .

i still think most places in ireland default to meat and 2 veg.

although my favourite place to eat in ireland is sweetbeats in sligo

but finding good meat free dishes in ireland is still the exception the fact ive eaten in most of them shows how few there are

yes theres huge scope but i just dont see the market at present (and i dont see covid as changing it)

oh ive been veggie for 35 years

Is anyone else getting fed up of TV in general? Will there be a resurgence in reading and a rush to the bookstores and libraries when they re-open?

Between the constant overload of negative news on mainstream TV/Radio and the recurrent disappointment with the next over-hyped series on Netflix I'm really looking forward to sourcing a good book.

We are a wealthy country, we can import anything we are short of and not restricted to gobbling spuds. There's no comparison between then and now.

More people will cycle to work. Less cars on the road if people opt to work from home. Hse should employ more nurse, s and pay them a good wage. We need Irish company's making ppe. Supply chain is important. Eg lets
not rely on China to make everything. Less cars equals less pollution. Maybe we might realise people who work in
Shops and warehouse, s are important. Hopefully the government is making plans for the next crisis or pandemic like having a stockpile of ppe
This crisis show trump and putin are almost useless in terms of leadership and the importance of having a well
    funded national health service

    Some positives i noticed
I work for a MNC, did 5 days a week 3 hr round trip with hell traffic for 3 years,

I got told today due to covid, we will be back to site in September and at best 3 days a week, this is a major plus for me, Working from home will certainly be the new norm and companies will have to embrace

My own eating out habits\wasting money has given me food for thought, sickened at how i wasted money before lock down with take out lunchs and dinners,

I think this is hitting home for a lot of people. The amount of money spent on things like take away coffees and snacks going to and from work and during lunch breaks. As well as the lunch meal itself.

The coming winter could be tougher than usual given the restrictions so its important that people make the most of the warmer/brighter months.
Every year I tell people not to wait for the summer to arrive - I see people waiting for 'good weather' and all of a sudden the summer is gone.
For me there are 2 seasons - dark season and light season. The summer starts for me as soon as the clocks change in March. We are now 1 month from the longest day of the year. Make the most of the next 10 weeks of glorious long bright days.
For example, if you haven't had a dip in the sea yet, go for it. I know it's still damn cold in May but it sets you up nicely for loads of swims during June/July/Aug/Sept.
