Given that the HSE was speaking to-day of expecting this to peak in mid-April, I would say there is almost no chance of re-opening on April 20.

I cant see secondary schools being back at all. Primary perhaps.

Unless you mean the 20th of May :D
    In which case
    20%

Cheers to you all, will make things easier to decide. We are doing distance learning so can go back to work but if we went back to college I wouldnt be able to attend because of work until may again. We have had no indication on what happens with our exams yet but they will have to be done online.

Might as well be earning money while distance learning rather than sitting on my hands .

What makes you think that? I would have thought schools will be last of everyone to return. That's a genuine question btw, curious as to reasoning for that idea.

    Primary schools open in June.

I think we are all hoping against hope some normality may return in June
    So primary schools
    But
    Even if it does
What’s the point in risking them for a month ?

Not a chance. They won't be back until September at the earliest.

This virus is only getting started.

    Hi Lc2020.

None of us are medical professionals. We were asked for an opinion, we gave it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,907 ✭✭✭kala85

Great to see so many medical professionals privy to the department's decisions.

The reality of it is, schools will reopen. Cases are decreasing by the day, and with the expectation for students to sit the leaving cert there's no reason to believe otherwise.

So quick were they to cancel the oral exams I think they'd have said already if there was reason to believe that schools will remain shut. It's looking very promising indeed that we'll be back after Easter. Perhaps not the music to the ears you guys wanted.

    Great trolling!

If the schools are back ill be delighted as it will mean that the virus has subsided.

However it is only on an upwards curve and this country is going to be badly hit. No ppe up till today, not enough swabs so no more tests, but massive increase in icu admissions.

School's are a petri dish for bugs at the best of times.

We are going to be hit hard and this corona virus won't be solved by June. They might run the exams alright but schools won't be back till September.

You of course realise the irony of berating teachers for speculating and then engaging in speculation yourself?

That being said, I hope you are correct and we are back after Easter but based on what has happened in other countries I don't think that is likely.

Thanks, gas when I opened that profile with one post joined today 🙄 let's hope for the best but I think May is the earliest we have a chance and then it is not worth the risk.

    Thanks everyone.

Oh, it's just a re-reg to get round a ban.

I think May is the earliest we might be back but who knows. I hear the Department is issuing guidelines next week on distance learning. Basically it will distance themselves from teachers using non secure technology.
There will be no extra funding for teacher lap tops but hey you can go to a school which will not have been cleaned properly and use it there. Or borrow a crappy school lap top . Away you go folks !

Ah he was on this thread last weekend berating me for saying there wasn't a hope the schools would reopen on March 30th because we were likely to hit 2000 cases this weekend.....

I would say at this stage, if we do hit the peak mid April as the HSE are predicting, and then it starts to subside, then we are doing very well all things considered, and if people stay at home, then we could start to see it subside over the following four weeks. We might see a loosening of restrictions on movements, but I don't think it will mean a reopening of the schools on the 20th. I think best case scenario is the last week or two of May and even then it might be for exam classes only just to give them some face to face time in school before the written exams or to get the practical exams across the line.

The latest guidance which is very likely to be extended beyond the two weeks states “ under new public health measures all schools will be closed until April 12th except in special limited circumstances. Teachers and staff have until 6pm on Monday 30th March to access school buildings and prepare what they need for remote learning . Travel and personal interaction should be minimized “
So if they do suddenly remember GDPR is the big bad wolf we were told it was we will not be forced back into schools. They will be closed

I'll remind about the mod note about the totally pointless chat about reopening dates. Optimist:back in April. Pessimist: back in Sept. Everything in-between.
Chat only about the now and about education.

I didn't see a mod note on the first page about that. Noted.

Living with a leaving cert student ,he is doing his best to keep up Internet here is pretty poor. I f he was told to attend for an exam in June ,July or August without spending time with his teachers in a school environment he would fall apart His mental health is more important to us than any state exam We need to know what is happening We are aware that many students can cope without the structure of the school day but many cannot

Actually you cannot enter schools from 6pm tomorrow as per a communication from the Dept today. This is similar in time to the building site shutdown so think it is safe to assume that further restrictions are in the pipeline.

Unfortunately, no-one knows at the moment.

We can speculate, but we don't know.

The best thing for him at the moment is to try to get some work done, and not to worry too much. I know that is so much easier to say than to do, especially when he can't even socialise with his pals, etc.

Yeah I saw that. We basically have a last chance to get in and get anything that we need.

We were originally told we'd be able to get back into the school after we closed on Thursday. Our principal hasn't let us back in since.

Our staff and students were given an opportunity to come in last week once the extended closure was confirmed. Strictly by appointment only. Gloves and masks given out. Straight in to collect what you needed and straight back out. Only one person at a time. Some students were out sick the day we closed so they were delighted to collect their stuff.

It would still be possible to re-open secondary schools while maintaining distance among pupils by only letting those pupils who are scheduled to sit State exams - Junior and Leaving Cert - this June return to class and dispersing them into smaller groups in classrooms that would be vacant in that scenario - the same could be done during the exams themselves.

Using the JCPA, which is separate from the Junior Cert exams, as a final assessment for Junior Cycle would incur the wrath of the ASTI, given its position on the assessment of pupils by teachers.

By the way, have the teachers' unions confirmed that their Easter conferences are not taking place this year?

Yes. That was announced nearly three weeks ago

Has anyone hear anything from their schools about redeployment?

Just came across this on Twitter and am wondering how it'll work for teachers? As in, how will classes be taught? I'm absolutely willing if they deem it necessary but what will happen my classes?

All public sector employees in admin haven't even been redeployed yet so we're a long way from that.
