Neither, it's a government statement from the Canavan one on behalf of the Minister.
Looking at Denmark, it does seem possible.

I was just reading about that and they are going to open primary schools, kindergartens and creches next week. The closure of secondary schools is supposed to run until the 10th May but obviously numbers of infections/deaths will impact on that. How similar are we to the Danes in terms of the spread of Covid I wonder? Fingers and everything crossed that we can start to open up again. I've always maintained that 6th years will be back in May so hopefully that holds up!!

Very similar, as the figures show

Seems I was wrong according to the examiner an announcement this friday

Interesting that that they are going to make a call this week when they actually have another week to play around with before having to announce an extension to the school closures. With deaths and number of infections increasing and the latter likely to increase more when testing gets ramped up that would suggest at the very least the cancellation of the JC.

Not sure why they would make an announcement to just confirm that status quo arrangement. Then again maybe they would do that just to deal with the uncertainty. But it seems early enough to give the full go-ahead when they might well have to revisit the decision.

I think the announcement on Friday is an overall "state of affairs" from the government before the current measures expire on (or are extended beyond) Sunday.

If it's just a general state of affairs address then they hardly need to mention schools. That's already sorted - back on 20th April and exams as scheduled in June. There's only need for an announcement if that changes. So maybe there'll be nothing other than "keep studying" said.

There are a number of exams due to happen in May though, I presume there’ll be an announcement on those.

Does anyone know if the marking conference for LCA orals happened? That would be a good indicator of what’s planned there.

Again, such an announcement is necessary only if they aren't happening. I'd have assumed such announcements if happening would come alongside an announcement next week about a possible extension to school closures.

Does anyone envisage schools returning on the 20th?

I can't imagine anyone will be back, but at a push maybe a staggered return starting with 6th years?

Not a chance I'd say. No sign of infections dropping at the moment and this is with most places closed and huge social distancing. When they won't let people go for a walk more than 2kms from their home on 9th April they'll not let hundreds of children congregate in schools a week and a half later.

    May at the earliest.

I just don't see how May is viable, or even June exams. My bet is on late August back and September exams, but obviously it won't be announced until we know more about the virus peak.

Has any project work been marked for LC exams yet?

If not I can foresee full marks given for everything meaning everyone starts at the same point.

No chance of us returning on the 20th.

Cant speak for all subjects but afaik the LCVP and Geography projects are still at our school and havent been sent off yet. As a LCVP student im wondering will the exam on the 6th be axed and just marked off the project (worth 60% overall)

The home ec journals have been marked.

Marking lcvp on just the project is not a bad idea. The projects should be with the sec at this stage, the were due in before the shut down.

There will be no announcement on the LC or JC until May at the earliest.
Btw if you havent seen Homeland series 1 and 2 watch it-its a cracker.

I’m the total opposite. I have two young kids at home. Two of us trying to work from home but the main childcare is on me. We are working from 630am-10pm at night working around each other and trying to get it all done. Im completely and utterly exhausted.

Broken sleep from both kids and anxiety. Of course one of them picked up their first cold sore from us and got stomatitis and it’s been a week of hell as a result with severe pain and trying t keep him hydrated. Two staff members have covid in their households. Both have/had household members in hospital. Two friends have relations who have died. I have close family on the front line and another seriously immunocompromised. I had to cancel my surgery because we had no childcare so I continue to be in pain quite a lot.

I’m now trying to get ahead because I was completely burnt out by the Easter and six weeks of online classes would be horrendous. I’m not finished topics with the LCs or with the JCs and am trying to figure out the best way to go ahead with material when running live classes isn’t really feasible without childcare. And if they bring the LCs back before they open crèches? I’ve no idea how we’d manage it.

So yeah. I want clarity. And I miss life. And I really want to be back in the classroom. But I need to know I have childcare if that’s gonna happen too because right now I know absolutely nothing and for me waiting is the absolute worst.

Are you doing online classes? I found no safe method that I was happy with so I didn't do anything video. Plus like you I had childcare issues. So I assigned work when I could. Spent a huge amount of time chasing kids not logging in.
After a day of trying to educate my own kid and logging in and out I just won't do work in the evening as it would burn me out.
I do take note of the worries others have . I didn't mean to sound flippant and my apologies if I did.
Some clarity will come don't worry. Look after your own health. By the sounds of it you are bordering on being burnt out and if that occurred - virus or no virus that would not help anybody

Maybe the announcement on Friday will sweep up things like this even if it doesn't make a final call on the actual exams. No doubt there's lot of stuff like this I wouldn't even think about.

LCVP should have been sent away by your school well before the closure date.

They could do the reverse with LCVP that they did with the orals. Given that the exam is worth 40% and the portfolio 60%, they could just cancel the exam and give the 40% for it, and just mark the portfolios.

I'm not teaching it anymore, but I remember last year that the submission date in schools was earlier than in previous years. It would just involve posting the portfolios to the SEC.

Has the Geography/History dates for submission passed? As in had they passed before we shut down on March 12th?

They could just scrap the projects and give the marks.

History and Geography were to be April 24th but were pushed back to May 15th. That date now looks very doubtful too.

Nothing live because I just can’t practically but google classroom and tons of recording. Like you say the admin is just incredible and unfortunately I have three exam classes to be chasing never mind the rest. I really wish I happened to have some well-being or something this year 😂

You aren’t wrong to be fair. I think the last three days have been the toughest tbh because yesterday was supposed to be surgery and holidays but instead was very busy and exhausting. But I’ve broken the back of the remaining set work in music and I’m a bit clearer in my head re the remaining work for the 3rd year maths too. Plan to enjoy the long weekend as my other half is taking some annual leave from tomorrow

The projects in Geography are marked along with the exam paper in June. I think most schools would have them done before the shut down. I know in our place a completed project is worth 20% of their exam in Christmas of 6th year

LCA ICT exam is scheduled for mid May, usually a Wed so probably 13th. I'm wondering if they'll give them the credits automatically, as per orals, or defer with rest of LC.

Specialist teacher has to be present for that so I'd say it could well be just a case of giving them the credits.

Probably was, our geog teacher told us that all projects were kept locked in a box on the school premises until our exams in june, prob didnt know about LCVP

Ultimately though it's the official deadline that will decide the outcome even if the reality is that most schools have them completed. Some schools will not so they would be disadvantaged.

I too am sleeping much, much better for the same reasons. I wake up thinking about all the strange, regular dreams I am having that I have not had before. Then I forget them. My clock cycle thing is upside down. But I am not complaining.

Geography and history projects are given to the superintendent to include with their exam answer booklets on the day of that subjects exam.
