Not trying to be controversial here, but, would it be possible/easier to isolate the most vulnerable, like those retired and with underlying issues?
The retired don’t work this making isolation much easier.
Those with under lying issues could be allowed work from home etc
Would this not be an option??

You can still be very sick spending weeks in hospital and suffer lifelong damage from this virus, even as a young person. Old people dying isn't the only issue.

Excellent idea, need a good sized sample but would show extent of the problem to within a few percent. Perhaps this is being done?
We won't be seeing the results of the new testing until Wednesday because the GPs are closed now for the weekend and the after hours services and A&E will probably be absolutely hopping with all the morons having their "End of the World" party tonight.

The testing results we got today were the samples they managed to test (before capacity was reached) which were submitted until 10am on Wed.

One of the big markers of the flu is sudden onset. So although coronvirus shares many symptoms with the flu, they develop gradually like a cold does, according to Dr Fauci. If you come down with a fever, chills, aches and pains out of nowhere its probably the flu. A more gradual onset, with a fever is a big warning sign for coronavirus as far as I can tell
That is directly the opposite of what the guy sitting on the right of the table said at the DoH press conference this afternoon.

They also said limit your interactions though and nobody is heeding that so I'm pretty sure they could say lick every door handle at this stage and it wouldn't make a shade of difference.

I have a friend who works in a nursing home. Out drinking in town at the moment he is. I know people need to have to live their own lives but seriously.
Could stay off the from the pubs in town for a while. I'm so annoyed with him over it.

They are putting the recovery of the whole country in danger. And in this case, the people he craes for. These morons cannot grasp it.

Unfortunately when you broach it with them it is usually met by the "no craic" response.

    Selfish gits

Haven’t a clue why this wasn’t what they did. It’s like the panic of Italy and the unexpectedness of it frightened the **** out of politicians the world over.

NO HORROR STORIES FROM ICUs coming out of Spain or Germany or France. Yes deaths, but in many cases it’s just some elderly people’s time on earth being sped up by a few weeks or months.

Ah that's grand so. Those elderly people were just wasting good air for the rest of us, not to mention driving the pension age up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,943 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

so live with elderly parents and in college thats now closed, apart from getting necessary provisions should I not go out to any interior place with people for the next few months?

  • Registered Users Posts: 401 ✭✭martin101

did you say anything to him?

Yep told him it's out of order. You have a duty of care for them people in that nursing home and he said "so what, I need a pint"
    What a selfish asshole

    Just back from the pub.

If anything a bit busier than a regular Friday night crowd.

How's the thread going? - Is there still a lot of pub-envy or has it calmed down a bit?

    Were the pints nice?

You really are talking about a minority with those stats though.
And that’s going to happen with the current scenario anyway so it’s not a great argument against isolating the most vulnerable

Do you think we'll ever be the same after all this has passed (hopefully)? Will be forever change how we behave or will we just forget about it all afterwards?

I'm more worried about the long term effects of this than the virus itself.

This is probably going to have a very negative effect on children who will be isolated or stigmatised for a very very long time. This will not be 2 weeks long and I think we all know that.

I honestly believe once the hysteria of Italy has passed, things will return to normal. Something weird happened up there that turned it into a nightmare in some hospitals. Their aging population who I gather would be a lot more expressive and social than our ones, helped speed up the spread of it in their population.

To be honest, In regard to the travel notice. Sure at this stage we don’t need the spanners in government or whatever to tell us not to travel. It’s a no brainer at this stage. Do people really need to be told this.

I think some people do need to be told things yes.

I feel like people are new to....people :) we have prisons full of people. People are awful. They are always doing awful things daily in the news long before Corona came to town.

A sobering read about pregnancy and coronovirus.

    https://mothertobaby.org/fact-sheets/coronaviruses/

1st Trimester: Risk of miscarriage (50%) and birth defects.
2nd and 3rd Trimester: Risk of early labour (approx. 30-40%), stillbirth (approx. 20%) and other complications like poor growth.

This is early days so many of the statistics are based on observations from a relatively small (Covid19-infected) population sample.
Other stats are based on stronger relationships observed during similars viral outbreaks in the past, I.e. SARS and MERS.

My sisters, both of whom work in a face-to-face role with the HSE and are pregnant, are in complete limbo regarding current/expected working conditions.

There’s a lot of mention in the media about the vulnerability of elderly and immunocompromised citizens, but I’ve heard no mention made of the unborn child. I hope this gets discussed more and want to draw attention to the issue.

There’s a pandemic. Be adult. Practice good hygiene etiquette and don’t use them.
We have more of a responsibility towards ourselves than McDonald’s has towards us.

Take it into your own hands. (Pun unintended)

Because I'm aware as evident in my original post I will not use them.

Its others who are clueless I'm concerned about.

I feel the public touchscreen consoles should be disabled and only over the counter orders taken preferably by card.

I see, well obviously as you are an expert on these matters could you perhaps give some more details as to how your plan would be enacted.

Nothing too involved, just the broad outlines......I'm curious and I like the cut of your gib sir/madam!

    Why did you self isolate...?

Hate to tell you but Spain is hot on Italy's heels. Things will not be normal for a while.

That’s interesting. I’d never thought about the onset of symptoms being an indicator or whether it’s a flu or corona virus. I’d say the anti social crowd are laughing a bit at the whole situation.

I never really understood the sudden onset thing until my daughter had the flu last year. Zero warning and then suddenly raging fever, sore throat, headache etc. out of nowhere. Nothing like how you can tell you're getting a cold by the scratchy throat that gradually develops into other symptoms. By all accounts coronvirus is more like that.

We're in the early stages of this so it's difficult to know but I think it'll be like 9/11 where the world will return to something mostly similar but with notable changes and extra paranoia.

I’m not out tonight. Have self isolated all week. My elderly neighbor called into me and I told her I wouldn’t come down the stairs, she was like “not to worry, I’ve been out all day if I have it I have it”
I know it’s a sensitive time for you but it’s not as black and white as you’re purporting it to be.

Personally I have done that. I won't be flying anywhere soon or popping down the pub.

But I can also see why others have popped out. Lot of #SupportLocal on my Twitter feed. And government not closing them kind of makes it look like they support the bars/restaurants/cafes opening.

Would love to live in a world where, as you say, people make decisions for their own good and the good of others but maybe a large group of people might need actual direction with rules and consequences if rules are not followed. I'm not expert in this field though!

We have got more than sufficient direction from our government. They've done a good job without resorting to martial law. Don't make unnecessary journeys, self isolate if ill, cancel social events, don''t congregate in groups of more than 100 people when indoors plus many other excellent pieces of advice. If you need to get out go for a walk or a run in the open air away from large crowds. How hard is it?

Why get angry about it? Chill out. It's not up to you control anyone else's actions.

And for all you know, they're in a quiet pub after a quiet restaurant. A few anecdotes about packed pubs and a screenshot a few people hanging around outside one particular pub does not mean this is widespread.

Also remember, that if they didn't have this to moan about, the chat here would just be about something else. Would you also work yourself up into a rage about that? It's not healthy.

Nah I know exactly where she is and it’s packed. It’s reckless and irresponsible.
We all have a duty to not take any risks so as to lessen the possibility of the spread.
She was one of the people stockpiling in the supermarkets during the week, cancelling holidays thar are months away and basically talking anyone who would listen into an anxious frenzy about how we’re all gonna die.

It’s akin to the mammies during the week bemoaning the gubbermint for not protecting their angles by keeping the schools open, only for them to allow them to roam the streets today in groups and gangs when they’re suppose to be at home. It isn’t the summer holidays.

The problem here is people freaking out & getting hysterical and then not actually doing any of the things they’re preaching about to reduce the risks of spreading the virus.
It’s just so hypocritical and it’s what’s causing the mass panic.

A significant proportion of us have to get it. We can’t stay indoors forever. Better for all that those of us at lower risk get it, and quickly. The good people in Temple Bar - so long as they’re not working in nursing homes - are doing what needs to be done.
