Not at all. We need these people to catch it. We are in the "let the muppets catch it first" stage.

They remissions are possible, so just because these people catch it now, doesn't mean they'll won't catch it again.

The population on this universe is too big. Is this nature's way of dealing with it. Maybe?

Maybe those people will Now vote for socialist Bernie as opposed to the other lad.

They did vote for him but they won't get that choice in the election. Bernie won by a landslide here in Nevada. He still wont be nominated though. Do you not understand how it works?

If this reddit thread is accurate, some people are stealing hand sanitizer from hospitals and doctors' surgeries. The author says (s)he has to zip-tie sanitizer bottles to patient's beds so that visitors don't walk off with them. Really, people?

Death has this much to be said for it:
You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be
    They bring it to you—free.

It seems like it. The official plan is to have the spread under control. The advice the gov is acting on says the people will get infected anyways, so they're trying to control the peace of the spread.

I'm not sure however if they understood the advice right, or if the advice itself is correct. There's definitely no consensus on how to act in the academic world.
The gov folks pick these advice which suit them best.

Ireland doesn't really have a huge army to control the crowds, so I guess it's better to have infections than civil unrest and economic slump in case everything would move into a lock down.

As Malcom Tucker would say "if your expert doesn't agree with your opinion your talking to the wrong one"

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

I felt very disturbed this morning. My elderly mother, who has significant medical comorbities came into my room, crying copiously. She read a detailed account of how horrible the death experience is for the patients in Italy. It took me over an hour to allay her fears, with correct medical information. This gory information, with neither experience nor context serves no purpose. People always remember the most extreme examples in their clinical practice. The majority of the patients get better. Even in the ICU, with the sickest patients, most patients leave there alive. Anecdotes are not representative of the routine practice as a whole. Also, the most extreme and sensationalist articles will receive media coverage. What good does it do to know all the worse case scenarios in medicine? Have faith in the medical profession, that even in the most dire situations, every patient will receive a treatment with compassion and care, tailored to their illness. Resources are limited, but compassion and resourcefulness in the medical profession are not. I am thinking of all the poor people out there, like my mother, terribly upset by the whole thing. Simple preventative measures will help to curb the spread. Try to avoid gory, news stories. WHO, HSE and CDC have all the information you need. Maintain interests outside the corona. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Lots of rest. We will get through this, and the vast majority of people (old and young) will be fine. Stay safe and calm people! Young and old, on the balance of probability, you will be okay!

If people are incapable of behaving like responsible adults instead of naughty teens, the pubs will need to be closed.
    All of them.

Country needs to be on a quasi war footing. Any private parties to be reported and broken up by Gardai or army in haz mat gear.

By the look of it it is the UK's way of dealing with it - kill the old and weak in society and have less benefit and pension payments.

My bet is they will be by the end of next week.

While I think this is necessary, the impact on those businesses should be considered though and the government should have a plan to prevent many of them from closing down permanently.

I think how this will happen is through a carefully worded statement from the govt- “on medical advice” - ie they’ll totally not own that message

Right about now is when strong leadership of a country is needed.A leader who can speak without a script, tell the people why we are doing what we are doing.
Here is Norway everything is grinding to a halt.Kids are no longer playing together on the street.

They won't reopen at the end of march.

29th is a chance to assess the situation then etc. They'll extend it beyond Easter almost certainly. If everything goes as perfectly as it can, we may start getting back to normal by then. But I'm not optimistic. People don't understand exponential growth, if that happens, there'll be five figure cases by then and not low five figures. Hearing about virus parties and the like. Stupidity is the most resilient gene.

Pubs fault for admitting so many and not enforcing social distancing. Patrons taking the piss and having a laugh at the expense of the rest of us.

There were also reports of people stealing masks and sanitiser from hospitals in France. They are now in safety lockers with access control :-/

Call me extreme but I think given the consequences if hospitals run out, I think stealing these should be considered manslaughter and punished accordingly.

American health standards for food are also notoriously low. The UK will be having their chlorinated chicken shortly. That only goes to show that higher food standards give us a better chance of avoiding these events. I hardly think it's racist to say such a thing.

Ohh I agree. The Asian wet markets and bush meat consumption anywhere increases the risk. But some people are so poor that they have no alternative.

A two year old playing in a hollow tree with a bat colony started the recent (2013) Ebola epidemic infecting 28,616 people with 11,310 deaths in Africa.

Things like this are used by racists to justify their racism. I am not suggesting that you are in any way racist.

You could see that Borris was absolutely thinking that at his press conference yesterday-he knows full well that his current strategy means 1000s of weak and old will die - he will have a lot of blood on his hands- I hope he’s lynched

Anyone have a source for daily totals infected for Ireland?

With regard to the UK - cant help think that Borris's 'herd immunity' idea will simply mean that without restrictions - the health service there will be swamped much like Italy.

There is nothing in the UK's plan which will stop that happening imo.

It's only a matter of time before pubs are closed. You only have to look what's happening in other countries. (Except UK) When it does happen we will definitely not get into the supermarkets because when pubs where closed on Good Fridays and on Holy Thursdays people buying drink trolleys full because pubs closed for one day. Madness.

On the UK situation. Boris Johnson speech reminded me of JFK famous phrase. It's not what your country can do for you. Its whats you can do for your country. In Boris case its give up your life.

You should read my previous post #1162.

They told people - rightly or wrongly - that washing hands fervently would save them from the virus. You can't buy hand-santizer so people steal it. It's entirely understandable and predictable.

No different than stealing bread in times of hunger - you should expect people to do things they believe are necessary for self-preservation.

Now people who need hand-sanitizer don't have it, people who don't need it do. Behaviour modelling - understanding how people react to measures and declarations - has not been built into our governments response, we should be very worried about this.
