Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

About 20 companies I had to deal with today.

All going for a Friday lockdown and shutting up shop.

Holohan needs to get from one press conference to the other presumably.

Hopefully anyway, just presumed they would have had that already pre-planned when they made the timing.

Most likely explains why its later then 6pm today aswell.

Pushed to 9pm? This can't be a good sign surely

Quick changing situation, lots of meetings today so compiling everything they got together. Leo said expect about 30% day on day increases. That suggests about 52 today.

I'd say it's pushed back as all relevant bodies relay the information for the day.

I think the schools will definitely stay closed until after Easter anyway.

I suspect schools could be until September. It's to 29th March for everything so as to ease people in to the idea, establish routines etc

No one knows, but why pull numbers out of his arse.

WTF are you even talking about? Do you think he just made up the figure? Or perhaps someone modelled it and told him what the model said? You seem to know the deal anyway.

Where the hell did Varadkar get the 15,000 mark from?

30% growth day on day for 14 days (the 30 being a rough ball park number.....could be 34% or whatever)

But this is all based in rumour, hearsay or expectation. Ireland is a small country, ****ty rumours spread fast, but equally many of us work with many companies and state bodies around the country, enough so that no secrets are kept. The government don't even know at this point what's going to happen Friday, nevermind 20 random companies.

Dow looks like closing close to the same level as on Trump's inauguration day!

The Dow closed at 19,827.25 on Trump's Inauguration Day, currently sits at 20,123 barely 300 points above that level.

Sounds like someone just typed in a formula in Excel and dragged it down. Using such "analysis" we are going to get 10 million infected in Ireland by mid-April. Wait, there are only 5 million here.

    Googled this 'herd immunity' thing and got this;

""To achieve herd immunity for measles at least 90-95% of the population need to be vaccinated. A disease like polio is less contagious, and 80-85% of the population would need to be vaccinated for herd immunity to work"

Where is the UK getting its '60%' figure from?

Based on the above 60% would suggest that Covid is not very contagious at all, yet we see Italy and Spain with huge contagion.
    It's based upon an equation.

    1 - (1 / R)

R is the infection rate so if an infected individual is likely to infect 20 people then the equation becomes 1 - (1 / 20) -> 19/20 or 95%.

Given that the virus is new there is limited data and the value of R is open to interpretation. If R is low (2~3) then you can get the figure that the UK is using.

It depends what you mean by 'lockdown'. The Taoiseach says he wants people to be able to leave their houses, so it looks like Italy / Spain / France type lockdown is not coming.

Fingers crossed. On a personal level, getting out for a walk (whilst maintaining proper social distancing) is a really important way of breaking the feeling of cabin fever (when it does start biting).

With the greater level of hygiene etc, does anyone know if the number of deaths in Ireland caused by the flu has actually decrased in the past month? Or do you think next month will show a decrease or are we far enough out of the flu season not to see any noticeable difference.

Beats someone coughing or sneezing on you.

It might do something to stop a direct cough or sneeze, but it won't stop human breath, which will get over, under and around something like that with ease.

I means that those that die are dieing faster than those that are due to recover are making a full recovery. Italy critical health service is so over capacity that it's in a triage situation where those with the least chance of making it are being left to die.

Italian doctors having to make tough calls with only so many ventilators to go around.
The strategy is to help the least sick
recover as quickly as possible. If the really sick are given the ventilators first then the hospitals will collapse under the pressure.
This is why the U.K. want all OAPs to self isolate for 4 months.

That's not how viruses work. They don't infect 10 million people when there's only 5 million.

It's like saying if it take €10 out of my account, that only has €100 in it, for 30 days, I'll eventually have €300

No, he's only prepared to talk about the next fortnight.

He said the figure could 'theoretically' go to 100k or 1m but he's not in a position to predict that.
