I suppose going to a pub on your own to try and pull is a no no then.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,152 ✭✭✭opinionated3

This thread is getting more and more depressing. Basically, we are heading for an Ireland where socialising is just going to be utter muck, or simply non existent. House parties?? No thanks. Housing estate bingo parties?? FFS......

I suppose going to a pub on your own to try and pull is a no no then.

The days of randomly popping in for a pint or two on your own is probably gone too while this model exists

I'm guessing with tables only, publicans will only really be accepting groups unless the pub is literally dead.

With limited capacity you can bet they'll be trying to milk as much as they can, and there's a heck of a difference between 5 per table buying drinks, than one at a table

    Agree with you gp1990.

No more popping in on your own for a couple of quiet ones. Even if the publican let you in, you dont want to have to share a table with strangers.

But with the restrictions it strips the whole fun out of the pub experience. The spontaneity. You talk to and hang out with the same five people you walked in with and that's it? I just don't see the appeal especially as I presume group sizes will be limited too. Like no group of say 20, so you cant even have a piss up with a big crew you have to select who goes where what night.

Exactly. Part of the craic is going to the bar to order your round and chatting a few people outside of your own group. Table service is a load of arse.

Look this is the way it has to be you must remain seated at the table.
You must seek permission to use the toilet.
    No loud taking.
    No dirty or rude talk.
No talking when the barman is talking.
    No music.

Can't see the problem myself it sounds like great fun.:p

I doubt there'll be any teachers at your group.

When I lived in Canada in the 90’s the bar rules at the time for all bars in Alberta was table service only, you could not even walk around with a drink once you had been served. If you wanted to move you had to call a waitress to carry the drink. While initially annoying once you got used to it you could still have craic and I had many a great night. I am sure once the rules are set we will innovate and find ways of enjoying ourselves while maintaining social distancing.

What's good craic about trying to fight your way through a crowd at the bar to get a pint??

We always use the lounge service when we go, so much easier. When your in a group of a few friends you can chat away all night.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,321 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Likewise I dont see the issue, have always used the table service in the lounge of my local, would rarely if ever sit at the bar and move to the furthest table away from the music on a Saturday night when it starts up. They can still put on whatever background music they want.

    Very little difference personally.

still using table service in 2020 for drinks ??? old school you are but more surprised places still do that type of service thats not just for food

Some places you could be told where to go if you shouted across your order at a narky bar person

Perhaps a take away service if rules around taking booze off licenced premises could be relaxed? One person in at a time. Awkward but better than nothing. There's 2 pubs 30 seconds walk from me.

I was in Calgary from 2000 -2002 and never experienced this, maybe the rules changed? Did you never go to Cowboy's?

Yeah, everywhere in my area has lounge staff still. Bar and lounge work got myself through college only about 6 or 7 years ago as well.

Local up the road would have probably 4 lounge staff on for a Saturday night, Friday probably 2 and a few bar men each night. They've separate staff that just do the food, dont take drinks orders.

    Just find it hardier tbh.

Lounge staff are in most suburban old school Dublin pubs, you don't really get them in the city, although Toner's has them.

In a short paragraph, what would you miss with a home bar build, draught on tap set up Vs the Pub?

Getting kicked out at closing time.
    The drunken taxi ride home.
    Pis*ing on urinal cakes.

Proper set up like that is actually so expensive when you look into doing it right if you want to keep the kegs at the right temp depending on what’s in them etc.

The pubs and clubs will return to normal eventually it’s just going to take time. I’ve no interest in a pub that’s at quarter capacity with no atmosphere and you have to ask for permission to go take a piss. When I was in college we had house parties unless some club had booked a DJ we liked. We’ll just have to adapt and go back to doing that for a while.

Yup it's difficult to think ahead but normal service will be resumed as some point, eventually gigs will resume and people will get up close and personal in a corner of coppers

The off licences would still be busy even if they charged the same price as pubs

Surprised publicans have not tried to get them to charge that. They are costing pubs money

The black market on smuggled and illegally distilled booze would by busy then.
A 700ml bottle of absolut vodka is €108.45 in the porter house (5.50 per 35.5ml). That's their cheapest vodka and it is not really known as a ripoff joint. €20 in tesco at the moment

they are in support of the nonsense MUP, money which goes to the retailer, instead of as excise tax. If they increase excise instead of MUP we would get literally billions in tax. Loads of people think/presume MUP is a tax, as it would be utter fucking madness for it not to be.

    https://www.newsweek.com/south-korea-hailed-pandemic-response-backtracks-reopening-after-covid-19-cases-jump-1502864
Despite recently reopening businesses amid an impressive decline in new coronavirus case, the South Korean government has issued a nationwide health advisory for bars and nightclubs to close down for 30 more days after health officials tracked 13 new cases to a single person who attended five nightclubs and bars in the country's capital city of Seoul.

"We believe we will have another community infection," said Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip at a Friday press briefing. "The spread took place in enclosed and crowded spaces. Transmission with no known source of infection can lead to a widespread cluster infection and that is why the government is not letting its guard down.

Ive heard that long ago(1960s) the price difference between the off-licenes and the pubs was very little.

    Can anybody confirm this?

Possibly very few off licenses back then, most off sales done through pubs. Not as much home drinking also.
