I'd say Pennys are really regretting not going online now.

Crazy to think the amount of jobs that are being lost, hope it's not for long.

Is there a reason such a massive operation decided not to have an online portal? Would of cost them next to nothing to give it a go? Weird.

I remember reading something about it before and it was something to do with the cost of having stuff delivered.
I don't really want to derail this thread.

I'd guess whatever margin there is on €5 t-shirts and €2 socks would get swallowed up by delivery costs.

Surely there's got to be an extra zero on that figure?

I'm surprised it's 4000 to but when I think of it they've all the cosmetics people. floor staff, sock room, restaurants and kitchen staff, cleaners, maintenance, etc. It all adds up.
    It's BT2 also.

Add Cineworld and all Odeon cinemas to the list.

Apparently the reason Penneys don't have an online presence is because they want people in the shop. You're far more likely to pick up an extra couple of items for 3 or 4 euro each if they're there in front of you in the shop, rather than having to go look for them online, especially if they're items you had no intention of buying in the first place. But because their prices are so low, people don't feel guilty about buying a few extra things if they see them. They're all about volume, the more they sell the cheaper they can keep prices and perpetuate the cycle.

Something like this might make Pennys go online pretty rapidly, even if margins are low Im sure a minimum spend of 50 euro for free delivery would work for them. The likes of Littlewoods, Asos, etc are in the same space as Pennys so they will be making a fortune while Pennys have their high street stores shut down.

Fair play to businesses paying their staff when shut though you would wonder how they long can sustain it if this goes on for months which is looking likely.

Yes. Tesco and the Pharmacy's are open. Then you have the likes of House of Fraser, Next, Marks & Spencer (who do have a grocery section), JD Sports, H&M and Superdry who seem to refuse to close

Just wondering shouldn’t tesco, Aldi etc. be selling only essential items and not clothes, flowers, tv’s, flower pots etc. during this time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,006 ✭✭✭Rows Grower

Dr. Martens have closed all there shops.
I don’t wear Vans or Dr. Martens by the way, I just pay for them.

Clothes are essential. I’d like to see you go outside without any on.

Clothes will be essential , I just know my parents who love gardening will be going round to Aldi, tesco,Lidl buying plants, compost and plant food. If they are expecting Garden centres to close as being a non essential business etc. It would bring more footfall to the super markets and not supporting social distancing measures.
