Safe to order a takeaway coffee?

I ordered a takeaway coffee instore yesterday. They lady asked me did I want milk and handed it to me with the lid on. It was only after I realised she may have touched the lid and I had it to my mouth.
Today I made it my mission to find a place where I placed the lid on myself.
I used a tissue to quickly scrub the lid before it touched my mouth.

Anyone else sceptical about ordering a coffee now?

Your reaction is sensible. I'd say if you just ask they'll be fine with you putting on the lid yourself.

I wouldn't step foot in a coffee shop in the current climate.

I go out for essentials only; food or medication, even then I'll try and have it delivered. To socialise, in any form, at the moment is putting yourself and your family at risk unnecessarily.

You also risk further overburdening an overwhelmed health service. Stay at home, brew your own, follow guidelines and act responsibly.

Also, wiping the lid with the tissue... you may as well have wiped it with your tongue if you're seeking protection from COVID-19.

Putting the lid on yourself might not be much advantage. Those things are always stuck together so the guy before you almost certainly pawed it.

I've been gagging for a takeaway coffee the last week, but not risking it. There's three coffee shops below my apartment and I'm surprised how many people are still going.

Use your own cup on the likes of Frank and Honest coffee machines. Could combine this when picking up essentials in a SuperValu / Centra.

I had a Frank and Honest coffee today just because I was out and desperate. I put the lid on to walk out of the shop and took it off to actually drink it. I didn't use any of the stirrers and used hand sanitiser when I was done. Even then I felt uneasy about it so I don't think I'll be doing it again.

I think this is the best option. I'll like to get up early and get a walk in before the crowds gather so a coffee is nice.

Safer option could be to take the coffee in the take away cup without lid and transfer to your own keep cup or equivalent

Lift up a stack of lids and take one from the middle.

Touching multiple lids in the process

Touching multiple lids in the process

You wash and sanitise your hands immediately before drinking your drink.

I have heard of people still getting sandwiches and rolls made in shops in the past few days. They must be mad.... why would you allow a stranger to make you food at the moment?

Good job you used the sanitiser as even going through the precautions you took, not using stirrer, taking off lid etc, you still pushed the same buttons everyone else did and probably put your hand down and around the same surfaces.

Just stay in as much as possible, only go to shops for pre-packed foods and medicine (avoiding crowded times) and don't buy any food/drink to take away.

And before anyone says this is over the top.... it is, we are all going over the top and the amount of people that might get cut down, depends on what we all do with the short time we have to only slow down the process... this is a war in which we are trying to protect our most vulnerable generation.

    Stay in and stay safe.

    Paywall.

Basically there is an Irish law that dates back to the 1840's and hasn't been repealed yet that prohibits the sale of coffee, wine and chocolate on Sunday's.

    Ye bunch of criminals.

I'm happier taking a lid from staff rather than from the pile that the public have been pawing. In any decent cafe staff will be observing good hygiene and washing their hands regularly anyway. For now I'm happy to support the economy with the current small chance they've been in contact with the roughly 0.02% of the population that have been infected, are dirty bastards, and risk posed by the tiny surface area you're actually touching with your mouth, and washing my hands after. I take a bigger risk eating something from a supermarket that other people have been touching with their unwashed mittens.

The safer option would be to stop going outside and ordering coffee.

    Stay at home people..

I used to buy the odd takeaway coffee when it was 2 euro max and even then only if there was a a bar or pastry/muffin free with it.

I went into the usual petrol station one day about two years ago and they had changed to Frank and Honest coffee and it was 2.80 for a cup, I have bought maybe two or three takeaway coffee's since then if I was feeling tired and still had a bit of a drive left, but the only time I supported that particular petrol station which is also a Centra was when they had slabs of Bulmers for 20 euro last year.

I have a stock pile of Tassimo coffee here at home now that I always buy when it is on offer, top class coffee for about 25 cent a cup.

How will washing you own hands before you drink help? The problem is someone else touched the lid and you’re going to put it to your mouth.

Use this opportunity to buy a decent machine, even a bean to cup Delonghi or something. It'll pay for itself in about a month and you can have as much delicious coffee as you like.

It’s very unlikely that anyone would have touched the lid I’d be taking. Like I said, lift as many as possible with your hand and take one from the middle. I always do that, virus or not.

That’s if you must go in for a takeaway coffee. I just wouldn’t bother at all. Luckily I have a goof machine at home and I ordered in 200 takeaway cups from the place I buy my beans.

Ok, now I see what you mean. You wash your hands so you don’t infect the lids for others.

I’ll be staying well away from away coffees for the foreseeable future: I can’t see any way to make it safe unless you bring your own cup and the staff wash their hands before they touch it.

Why cut my post in half when quoting it when it basically said the same as you did at the end of your own? Some of the ****ing agenda here is unreal..

I will be staying away too. Even if someone has one of those keep cups they’re still needlessly entering the shop if it’s just for a coffee.

It wasn't for you... it was for others who may have only taken in the first part of your post.

Sorry if you think I was a pain, but I will take any and every opportunity to push the point home. Some people still don't get it and life is too precious to let them risk infecting others. My only agenda is to keep myself and my loved ones safe.
