Why are we not restricting travel - what is the logic?

We are an island and are still not restricting flights or movement in and out of a country and have no screening.

Thankfully some countries have now grounded their flights or banned travel to their own country so that will help us but I fail to understand why we have no restrictions, screening or quarantine set up and am trying to understand what the reason is.

I don’t mean an outright ban - just anything. I know we were always going to get it but surely props travelling for non essential travel at this stage is a joke.

I have no doubt that people are still stupid enough to travel to and from Ireland to get little breaks in still. You really can’t underestimate people’s stupidity and it’s putting vulnerable, risk groups, healthcare worker and shop workers tirelessly doing the best they can.

Why do we have no screening, quarantine or restrictions of travel even at this stage ?

Please don’t make the point that the virus knows know borders or we were going to get it anyway. The aim we are trying to achieve is to slow it down not to stop it.

Surely restricting travel especially at this stage is unless you are health care worker etc

Close the airport to all non-essential travel. The countries that got on top of this early took actions like implementing serious screening protocols at their airports and stopping flights from China.

Moreover, lately we are seeing that of these place that got a handle on it, the new cases that are showing up are coming in from abroad. There are a lot more cases of coronovirus per capita in the UK now than China so why have we not stopped flights?

Going forward, I am concerned that when the London hospitals are completely overwhelmed due to the fact they delayed so long in shutting up shop and people are seeing an Italy type situation unfold in the UK on Sky and the BBC, people may attempt to leave the UK for Ireland. In particular, people who believe they may have the virus will book a flight over to Dublin and enter an Irish hospital for treatment, straining our very limited resources.

Some may say this is unlikely, but we should not be taking any chances at all in a time of crisis like this.

@Mods: Please don't merge this thread with the main thread. This particular issue of unrestricted flights is very important and deserves as a wide an audience as possible. This is a glaring weakness in our framework for tackling the virus.
Kingston Mills, Prof of Experimental Immunology, says on @TodaySOR that he can’t understand why flights are still operating between Ireland and affected areas like Italy. Says travel restrictions are an essential part of stopping the spread of coronavirus.
