What do you play & what's the budget?

I mainly play League of Legends, Guild Wars 2, Final Fantasy 14.
Budget would probably be under 1000 Euro.

With that budget I would consider selling the old system as is and building a new one.

1K would buy you a Ryzen 3600, 16GB DDR4 3200mhz, 1TB SSD and GTX1660 Super. (not including the sale price of old system)...run all new games at 1080 ultra.

The easier option is to get a 2nd hand i7-4770 for €100, and just upgrade graphics card for the €250-ish. Would still be pretty good, few hundred euro outlay, zero hassle and get probably a third of it back via selling the i5 (€50) and GTX960 (€60ish).

Guild Wars 2 and LOL would benefit from a pure GPU upgrade, not sure about FF. Most newer games struggle with those old i5's at times.

Thanks for the recommendation. I might go for that 2nd hand i7-4770 option. What graphics card would you recommend with that? Is there any need to upgrade the motherboard if I go with this?

I would recommend against the i7-4770 - the jump to a Ryzen 3600 is HUGE (~25% increase in IPC in addition to 50% more cores).
And if your current 8Gb RAM is on a single stick, that means you're in single-channel mode and leaving performance on the table - at which point I'd ask, again, why upgrade an outdated system?

To be honest, if you gaming 1080p, then most what would you need now is a GPU. I honestly can't see what game you would need to play for this cpu to struggle.

I would recommend just getting something like 1660ti for now and maybe an SSD for just games. I would be shocked if you would not be happy with how much better your system would do just by spending fraction of your budget.
And if you still not happy, you can order the rest of the system and use that SSD and GPU for that build. Or just get that GPU and SSD, and wait for new Ryzen CPUs come out this year. Win win.

Given that your graphics car is by far holding you back, I'd pick up a 1660ti and just pop it into the system.

I'd also get go for a 2x8GB ram set up and leave it at that.

If you're still not happy with performance then you can look at upgrading the cpu to the i7 mentioned. For the games you mentioned and a 1080p resolution there is absolutely no need to waste 1k EUR :)

I recently upgraded from the GTX 960 to a RX 580 (the 1660ti is more powerful still) and can play new games on high settings at 60fps+ with LOL getting 200+ FPS so you'll be more than fine with the nvidia card.

Oh and grab a 500gb or 1TB SSD and you'll be golden!
