This may not be feasible, but it would be good if each country could first eradicate the virus in their country (maybe take 6 months). Less for some, more for others. Then make everyone take test in each airport before flying.

Im not flying anywhere if there is a chance of somone in my party or sitting close to me getting a cold on the flight (happened before) and then quarantined for your entire holiday when they take your temperature at the other end.

Maybe if the airlines installed custom perspex glass in strategic/random fashion to facilitate singles , couples , families seating.

I think its begining to look like a write off. Hopefully airlines cancel but i wouldnt bet on it. Isolation when landing in a country is a real game changer.

Due to go on hols in September to Portugal. In my head I have it written off, especially after today's memo from the EU commission more or less saying that travel will be restricted to family only i.e people returning to their home countries to visit family etc. Disappointing but nothing we can do only hope the hotel is kind enough to allow us rebook for next year at a similar rate. I'm more worried at this point in time about my job as I work in aviation. Need to see planes back in the sky asap, or else job losses are going to increase exponentially.

Had Majorca booked for 1st June 2020, pushed it back 12 months. Hopefully things get back to normal sooner - obviously.

I think its likely 2020 in total will be a write off for air travel.

Until there is a proven vaccine or treatment, countries wont open their borders to travellers without some form of isolation or quarantine period.

I was told today that the Australian Government has said that international travel before early 2021 is now highly unlikely

Any links for this by any chance? We have tentative plans to travel to Oz in Q1 next year, nothing booked.

    Thanks

EDIT - found it, thanks. Should have googled it first :)

"All mass gatherings banned until august" set to be announced by the Gov. I wonder how this affects air travel, would it be regarded as a 'mass gathering' since its so enclosed? https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/coronavirus-all-mass-gatherings-in-state-set-to-be-banned-until-august-1.4234326

gonna be interesting to see how they define it

Due to travel in September. If flights are restricted to visiting family only as mentioned by a previous poster should I be entitled to a refund if the trip is recreational?

If the flight departs then no refund - even if you decide not to travel.

If the airline cancels then it's a refund or voucher.

If your destination is on a DFA no fly list, your travel insurance may cover it.

Just for your information folks, Portuguese hotels expect to be fully open in July, but more than likely only catering for domestic market. The canaries hoping to welcome international travellers sometime around October......

It's still a mystery - we are on 80% lockdown with no significant public gatherings in the foreseeable future.

I contacted Aerlingus about planned holiday flight departing in early June to Italy and got the following response. I know its a game of cat and mouse at the moment to ensure joe public incurs the cost.

Planes full of holidays makers taking off in June while - pubs, gigs and sporting events remained banned here.

At this time, we continue to operate service and as your flight is still operating, our standard fare rules apply, if you don’t wish to travel with us a refund of taxes less the admin fee will apply.

We continue to closely follow developments on the Coronavirus outbreak and will provide continuous updates on our website or will send you an email of any changes to your travel. Please be assured that our existing policies and procedures are in line with the guidance provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and EASA.

If you purchased travel insurance, please contact them to file a claim.

    In this situation, you may:
    • Postpone your trip - Change fees and fare differences may apply, as per the rules of the fare purchased. Most changes can be made by selecting the Manage Trip option on aerlingus.com
    • Cancel your trip - Non-refundable fares will receive a refund of taxes only, as advised during purchase. If you wish this option, please confirm by reply if you wish us to proceed.

Due to high volumes of queries, please do not respond further unless you require additional assistance

My holiday for June 27th was cancelled today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,004 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

Am a cautious person. I don't think I'd like to be in a crowded space like an airport and security Q and on a plane for a long while yet.

Not worth it for me, others may feel differently.

And I wonder how the recipient destination will react too regarding hordes of visitors many of whom may be carriers of the virus. Tough times.

Frustrating seeing travel agents and airlines pushing very cheap options for the later part of this year and into 2021.

Already had to cancel a family trip to Thailand this year, then see flights from under €400 return Sept-Nov...if only we knew they would actually happen :(

They know the possibilities of Thailand being open in September are, at the very best, 50/50

I travel to the USA twice a year to see family, I was supposed to be there this week. I actually awoke this morning after 4 am and I heard my return flight plane fly over my house :D

I opted for the voucher plus 10% from Aerlingus, I think it’s valid for 5 years. I’m happy enough with that.

I would say this year would be too risky to fly, hopefully next year or the year after things should be improved. Once the green light comes I’ll be on the first plane out of here

I've been following this thread on and off over the last while. It's very difficult to have any certainty around anything given what's happened over the last 7 weeks. However my gut feeling has been that the consensus on this thread has been quite pessimistic. Earlier today I was reading the following report by WHO:

"Non-pharmaceutical public health measures for mitigating the risk and impact of epidemic and pandemic influenza"

They're suggesting that there's little evidence behind travel restrictions and to just use them as delay tactic for a limited period of time. With that in mind, I'd hope air travel within the EU would open up by the end of the summer. Domestic routes should open before then. What are people's thoughts on WHO's recommendations?

I think whatever happens, the way this has been presented to the population that even if travel restrictions were lifted & hotels/bars/restaurants etc. were opened across europe huge amounts of people still wont travel & will take the financial hit that comes with it.

I genuinely dont think boards is representative of the overall general public feeling around this, with most people I speak to terrified at the thought of going out to shops to buy essentials, never mind going to airports, mingling with 100's of strangers, sharing an enclosed space with 200 other people and then mingling with 1000's of strangers ina foreign land... the travel industry is a write off for 2020 IMO.

Do you think the media to blame for fear mongering? If so, do you think perceptions can change back quite quickly. As perceptions have changed massively over the last two months.

Borders should be closed, anyone planning holidays, do so for next year....

The more people travel the more it spreads....

Great to see numbers are dropping but they are still high and what's to stop it exploding again....

The planet is already healing somewhat from the less travel and commuting....

    Thats a good question, & honestly, I don't know.

It just dawned on me talking to people over the last week that when easing of restrictions came up so many were cautious of engaging with them & voiced opinions that they'd be continuing to behave as they are currently. I was genuinely surprised how many are in real fear of catching the virus & I can't see the easing of restrictions really changing that mindset in the short term. I could be completely wrong on that but it will take some convincing for many people I suspect to travel outside of Ireland when they're struggling to get their heads around even going for a walk in their local park or suchlike.

The Irish media has played this all in a relatively level headed manner. Daily facts, no scaremongering, repeat the Stay at Home message. If anything I think they've been too easy on holding the HSE to account.

On the other hand the morons who only get their news from Facebook and Twitter might be scared, but might think it's a conspiracy by China /aliens/US Army /jews/muslims/leprechauns.

That's a tad disingenuous, not everyone afraid of this virus is a moron believing in crackpot conspiracy theories. Many of the people I spoke to would be the polar opposite of that description.
