I know someone planning on driving an hour each way tomorrow for a completely silly reason. Doesn't seem to acknowledge the fact that there's a quarantine in place and advice to stay within 2km.

    Can't understand it at all.

The 2km limit relates only to exercise. But obviously nobody should be driving anywhere for a silly reason

I have a property in Dublin which is unoccupied at the moment. I got a call that there is a leak. Can anybody tell me if I am allowed to travel to my property to assess the situation and fix the problem? I would need to travel from co. Kildare on M/N4. Are there any check points and if there are, how strict are they are? Have people been fined for not staying at home?

there were allowable reasons given, this is not official below but the gist of it
While everybody must now stay at home in all but a handful of circumstances - such as travelling to and from work that has been deemed an essential health, social care, or other essential service that cannot be done from home - people are still allowed to shop for food or household goods.

What's more you can travel beyond the 2km limit for food shopping, going to the pharmacy or the doctor.

Essential foods were mentioned, so you should not be driving to the fancy fish mongers, butchers or takeaway if you can survive on food in your nearest shop.

I know a guy routinely going to hosptial via taxi and the taximen say that is one of the few allowable things they can do. He has to bring a doctors letter in the taxi, taximen said there are checkpoints all over the place.

I have a letter from work if I have to go in, but am working from home so far.

In other threads I see people talking about popping into shops to get milk etc, I do not thing this is right. Thoughtful buying should be going on, minimise the visits to shops but do not clean them out. I got an email from tesco but it was for UK and it seems you are limited to 3 items there of the same type, to combat bulk buying.

I can understand the thought behind it but wonder if it could cause issues for somebody who really does usually buy lots of an item which is NOT in high demand at the moment and buying 5 of that item would have no impact on supply but is forcing the customer to come back earlier than expected.

I saw a uk blogger say kids were banned from tesco and in full support, but what about single parents with very young kids?

As for elderly people I used to live on a road with a old bachelor who was a nightmare and we never saw visitors going in, must have had mental issues. I wonder if anyone like this is at risk of being forgotten and are scared to leave the house not just for health reasons but fear of the gardai, and possibly too stubborn to ask or accept help.

We are a family of six and would go through 4-5 loaves of bread in a week, and 4*2L milk. I’ve been shopping once a week, so if I could only buy 3 loaves of bread, then yes, it would definitely mean I’d have to make an extra trip to the shop. My husband is working, and works long hours, so if I had to go to the shop a second time I might not have him at home to mind the kids while I went.
I deliberately haven’t booked a slot for online shopping though, I’d rather leave it for a single parent or older person who simply cannot get to the shop.
I don’t think it’s practical to expect people in rural areas to shop in their closest shop, I couldn’t do my weeks shopping in centra, it’s easier to travel a bit further afield and get everything I need at once

Agreed, I did not literally mean a newsagent if its nearest and you could physically live off what they sell, that illustrates the problem with these blanket rules. I was really meaning if you have a decent size supermarket nearby where you can get all your stuff then go there. I have also seen talk of people going to several supermarkets, probably doing their usual routine like "oh the kids don't like the ketchup from lidl, and the butter is cheaper in tesco, the cornflakes in dunnes" etc.

But also in saying that I would like to see the smaller shops still get business, but sensible business. I had planned on going to the local chinese takeaway and buy up stuff to stick in the fridge and freeze, I was going over late at night to avoid crowds and it was closed, I since saw they have closed down for now.

I saw a friend on facebook posting on his local butchers page saying he would be ringing to do a big order. That is reasonable to me, he knew them by name and obviously wants to see them survive.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8164763/Tesco-limits-customers-just-ONE-item-milk-bread-toilet-roll-each.html
Tesco limits milk, toilet roll and bread to ONE each

but its the Sun! it was the small express stores
Tesco has limited purchases of some items at their Express stores to one each
Sainsbury's has a three-item limit on most products apart from long-life milk, toilet roll and soap which all have a restriction of two.

And Aldi has a four-item cap.

Neighbor gets a guy in to do her garden every week.
    Hes there today.

Pretty sure hes not local ie living within 2K

I would have assumed this was not allowed under the current situation?

Where he lives has nothing to do with it. If he’s not an essential worker (he’s not), then he shouldn’t be on the road

    100%.
Roads have got really busy. I haven't been around shops much but the pharmacy and local shop I got to were quiet and had good social distancing and everyone was compliant.

Wonder is it just the roads that are busier ...........if so where is everybody going to?

It could well be that people who applied for covid-19 benefit got it paid in the last couple of days so they have money to buy food?

Anyone know how strict the Gardaí are on people without official letters?

I've been working from home for the past two weeks, but am struggling without some documents from the office. I'd literally just be going in to collect a few folders and that's it.

Would I be stopped and told to go home if I used this as a reason for being on the road?

I was out today to go to garage to pick up post as insurance cert needed for cars as only no one around and quiet ,down to local shop first in q and back to house. Not too many cars on road and back to house for another few days.

Shopping, in the bigger supermarkets, would be my guess, went out for milk and a few other bits today, went to lidl: queue around the carpark (good distancing though) so turned around and got the bare essentials in the newsagent down the road, old habits die hard and Friday/Saturday shopping is one I don't get these days (even before c-19) but they're always busier.

I would have thought it would be OK. They are not out to arrest everyone on sight (not that they can until they have the powers to do so), but seem to be acting reasonably.

I've been stopped a couple of times in the last couple of days; once to go shopping and once to deliver stuff to my father (in his 80s and living alone). Both times they accepted what I said without asking for anything else.

What about taking a car to the garage.Am I restricted to my local garages or would I be able to take it in to the Dealership even if that was a much longer journey? (Some 55 miles each way)

At present I cannot rely on it to start (it seems to start first thing but is much harder when it warms up and yesterday it wouldn't start ,luckily I was at home)

There is no public transport where I am now except for the bare essential.( not sure if taxis are still running)

    Yes, that would be essential.

Better check if they are doing emergency work as might be closed.

Borrowed from a friend, so very apt at the moment

As someone with a Masters in disease control, you can only imagine the sheer hell on earth that Facebook is for me at the moment.

From Chantelle who has impressively made the leap from bath bomb retailer to consultant virologist in a matter of weeks and can tell you exactly why the government and their experts are wrong, to Bob who claims to have secret intel from a secret government group on the secret programme of secret treatment measures that the government are definitely bringing in at 3pm next Thursday, only it’s a secret, but he’s posting it on Facebook so he feels like 007, to Steve who thinks it’s all a load of bollocks and if he wants to wander round town he bloody well can cos he doesn’t feel sick and why the **** is ‘spoons shut cos his granddad didn’t fight the nazis for him to be told to stay inside even if pornhub premium is now free for a week.

I tried as hard as I could in my studies and in my work in disease control to avoid viruses like the plague (see what I did there?) because they are absolute bastards. Bacteria are so much easier to control and parasites are positively dreamy. Viruses are utter bastards (did I mention that?) because you can do almost **** all to them. To deal with viruses you have to deal with the viral vector instead. That’s the weak point for a virus. Its vector. Only in this case the vector is humans, bloody stupid, arsehole humans like Chantelle, Bob and Steve. Viral control is about psychology more than it’s about medicine and that’s what’s scary about it. Giving everyone a pill is easy, getting everyone to listen and change their behaviour is a ****ing nightmare.

The virus is just chugging along being a virus, it’s living it’s best life #livelaughcough. You can’t ignore it out of existence, scaremonger it away or become magically immune by gargling with vinegar, donning a decorating mask or sticking a live frog up your arse and swanning round town like an immortal dickhead. You have to actually do what you’re being told to do. YOU.

YOU. You can stop it. Do what you’re told. Stay the **** inside. Stop thinking you’re an expert, stop thinking you know best, stop thinking you’re a rebel, stop trying to be a special little cupcake. Be a sheeple. Do what you’ve been asked to do. This is NOT your time to shine sweet cheeks, this isn’t your opportunity to over throw the system and save mankind. It’s your opportunity to sit tight, watch Netflix and save mankind.

The virus does not give a **** about you. You’re just a stepping stone, a host, a nameless, faceless breeding ground and launchpad. All it gives a **** about is reproducing and finding new hosts. Don’t let it. Break the chain. Shut the hell up. Stop spreading fake news, fear and gossip. Let the experts be the experts and do what they tell you because all the googling, all the conspiracy theories, all the spoilt princess routines and all the voodoo bull**** in the world is not going to help you one little bit. This is not about YOUR ego, it’s about OUR survival. So act for the good of us all and do what you’re being asked to do.

You can tell your friend that's the best thing I've read about this whole sorry saga.

At the risk of very bad pun, his or her rant deserves to go viral. If it did, it would surely lessen the pain for them of looking at the stuff referred to on Facebook.

I wouldn't be one to stop you even though I'd love to stop the idiots that keep turning up by car for walks on the beach in front of our house.

You are doing a job no different to a delivery guy and its OK for them.

Yeah they can’t get one at all from any shop in the area and the supermarket my mother normally went to is getting very laid back on numbers and cleaning, etc. I’d rather they’d stay in at this stage and run it down and even just leave the bags in over the front wall.

1 gardener is one thing, but today I saw 4 lads feeding a tree branch chopping machine thing, and another in the garden too. All close to each other, doubt they live together! and near passersby too.

I was in a "pure pharmacy" branch today and was impressed, you can only step inside the front door, then there is a screen and you could hand a prescription through, there was a card reader there out the front, remote from staff, and hand santiser for customers. Like the protection level you might see in banks. They are also doing free deliverys now if you live near one, and I think if you spend a tenner on non-prescription stuff it is also free regardless of where you live. They also allowed me to get a good few repeat prescriptions all at once.
