Yeah that’s true but I doubt you’d fit volume wise 25 tonnes of face masks into a 20ft container.

Anyway It’s still almost a 1/4 of a Billion euros for single use PPE. The mind boggles. Just seems like we’re getting royally ripped off.

Less than 10 tonnes worth of surgical masks in a 40 foot (550,000). 600 per carton. 900 cartons squeezed in.

    Everyone is getting ripped off.

What the HSE should be doing is filling 40 foot containers for arrival in the summer. Less than 3k a pop versus 40k plus for air freight.

Mauritania got a batch of testing kits from China which had been exposed to high temperatures and were useless upon arrival.

A bouncy castle operator in Kilkenny has supplied 27 nursing homes around the country with face masks.

    You couldn't make this up.

Yeah right, definitely not good quality masks anyway. I just meant without knowing the exact details of the order and what everyone else is paying at the moment it's hard to really judge. A shipment meant for France was outbid literally on the runway by US agents recently

Source is from RT which is blatantly anti-US so you wouldn't know what to believe.
But the initial global solidarity in responding to COVID-19 is definitely starting to wane.

I've read it elsewhere too, Austrian national news

We and other countries should learn from this and start making our own....

Easily done and could use plastic that needs to be recycled instead of it ending up in countries that can't do anything with it other then dump it in the sea.....

I actually can't understand it all how reliant they are on such a corrupt country such as China.

I don't think it would be economically viable to make them in Ireland. The mass manufacturing plant would be too expensive for the miniscule profits made from extremely cheap products. And btw we're also reliant on the corrupt EU and we are pawns for the corrupt USA so I don't think we should throw stones at China who are also a good trade partner of ours.

Are people really surprised that goods that came from China weren't up to standard?

We have always been forewarned when buying stuff from there. Masters of cheap tat.

You do know that China is the worlds factory and while they have companies selling cheap tat there are also the backbone for allot of the current tech industry and allot of hardware comes from there.

In order to get a balanced world view, I watch reports from France24, RT, Al Jazeera (one of the best) etc.
RT has been woeful in their reporting of this pandemic.
They focus on attacking Europe first (specifically the UK and France) and then the U.S.
I understand the purpose of RT, but they could give it a rest and not be so blatant anti-Western during this worldwide pandemic.

It's about to hit Russia now, so let's see how they report on the issues there.

    Yeah I know that.

Unfortunately it seems they are leaning towards the 'cheap tat' end of the scale here.

For a second there I thought you were going to say that they supplied the nursing homes with bouncy castles.

China's efforts to help haven't gone smoothly, as several countries have reported faults with Chinese-made supplies.

This began with Spain's recall of about 58,000 inaccurate rapid COVID-19 test kits late last week, and Turkey also casting aside a number of sample test kits that were faulty.

This was then followed last Saturday by a Dutch recall of some 600,000 face masks that didn't provide an airtight seal.

Australia also found fault with Chinese products, with Border Force officials telling the ABC on Wednesday that it seized $800,000 worth of faulty face masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) in recent weeks.

The lesson is DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM CHINA

Not just faulty, a recent report was that some test kits were actually infected:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/30/uks-attempt-ramp-coronavirus-testing-hindered-key-components/

    Extract:
One of the suppliers - the Luxembourg-based firm Eurofins - sent an email on Monday morning to government laboratories in the UK warning that a delivery of key components called “probes and primers” had been contaminated with coronavirus and would be delayed.

Might explain some of the various delays (in many countries) and rejection of sent supplies, classed as sub-standard.

Tbf those shields are crap without a surgical or n95 mask. Only reason he managed to get some.

Taiwan is your only man. The Czech PM is doing the right thing atm. Taiwan is the second biggest producer of medical masks in the world, after China. The European governments probably bought them from China because they were cheaper

Is the issue that the gear was not supplied as per spec we supplied or is it like the bogey DART carriages which were purchased with seats not designed for western European people sizes?

Will there be a red carpet and a massive Garda escort for the stuff that needs to be returned or have the FG spin team any more wasteful and patronising ideas?

If a load of the masks aren't suitable for clinical use, why not hand them out to the public, in particular the vulnerable and folks in care homes? They're going to be better than paper masks or scarves. If you get lemons you may as well make lemonade.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Paul Reid has said 65% is suitable for direct use and another 15% is available for substitute use if necessary.

We definitely should try to source some PPEs from Taiwan.

    https://www.eupoliticalreport.eu/taiwan-donates-ppe-to-europe/
"Taiwan is donating 10 million protective face masks to countries seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The masks will be divided amongst the United States, 11 European countries and 15 diplomatic allies"

It is ironic that China is going to make a fortune from this pandemic.
France just ordered a billion face masks from them.

They boought them from a dosgy supplier, their foreign minister of spain admited as much
