PC build for work + flight sim.

1. What is your budget? Preferably close to €700 but up to €900 if completely necessary.

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? I am a software developer so a good build for viewing and developing code, as well as running all Office applications. Hoping to run the new Flight Simulator when it come sout, so that'll be the only gaming realistically.

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No.

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No.

5. Do you need a monitor? Yes.

5a. If yes, what size do you need. I honestly don't know the difference between the sizes.


5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? N/A

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Mechanical keyboard would be nice. If there's a cheap wireless adapter then maybe that too.

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Wouldn't have a clue, so no.

8. How can you pay? Card.

9. When are you purchasing? In the next 2 months hopefully.

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Gonna try build it myself so no need for help.

Is it not going to be heavily cloud/stream based? Nobody is storing that game on their PC locally, that's for sure. I think there's several petabytes of data required.

It's the rendering on flight sims that's the killer. They're not really games, they're simulators and are very resource heavy in terms of CPU and GPU. I wouldn't be expecting a huge amount from sub €1k build. It will allow you to run it at low to medium settings at best.

That said, we still have no idea as to the minimum requirements for MS FS 2020 as yet.

I've been using a €400 Lenovo with integrated graphics for P3D and FSX and have been running low/medium no problem. The new FS will be largely cloud based, streaming the visuals from the internet.

On older flight sims the main problem was old code and poor parallelization where IPC and clock speed on a small number of cores was king.

I'd imagine the new one will take advantage of all the cores it can get with much better optimisation for rendering distant objects.

Any opinion on this? Need to try bring it down a little bit so I can throw in a monitor and keyboard.

Yes, they're just regular PCs - you can even customize them with named parts.

Depending on the type of software development you are doing, you may need a decent rig.

As well as the horsepower, the monitors(s) are crucial. 2 Decent sized monitors is a minimum, with a decent (& very large) 4K monitor a huge benefit. But again, it really depends on what type of software development you will be doing.
