Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hands down one of my favourite movies as a teen/young adult.
Had great memories of it, that centred on the action.

I rewatched it as a mid-30's man a few years ago after convincing my wife it was brilliant.

It was a long cut, and a very uncomfortable watch.
So much overt sexualisation flew over my head as a younger man.

I'll give it a watch and see what I think.

    Blazing Saddles.

This always amuses me. The Anit-PC Brigade think Blazing Saddles wasn't a PC movie. It's a movie about a town with a white population, run by a corrupt white mayor, terrorised by a white crime gang and all the white people in the town are too scarred to do anything about it. Then a black lad arrives and saves all the white people who have to challenge their racism and prejudices, to embrace him as he saves the town. If they made it now the same anti-PC people would call it PC gone mad.

Some clowns think the fact that there are n1gger jokes in the script, that makes it a non-PC movie. The racist jokes are at the expense of the racists in that movie.

Did he not understand that the film was making fun of racists? You should tell him about the Springtime for Hitler song in The Producers :D.

He did after it was explained, and he watched it ;)

A very common theme amongst my son's generation and I suppose in common with myself when I was 16.

Is that the world is simple, black/white, right/wrong.

It's not, teaching our kids that will knock a lot of reactionary PC kneejerk on its ass.

Context matters, he needs to learn that.

Any film involving uncertain identity e.g. Sommersby, someone coming back from the war claiming to be X wouldn't be a runner due to DNA evidence (or a quick google).

A lot of murder mysteries would have to be rewritten as DNA evidence would quickly ID the killer.

Love Sommersby. Even a decent photo from before the war would have shown he wasn't the same man.

Been watching Columbo and DNA tests would have cleared up loads of those cases in no time.

Honestly, the rewatch especially in a post #metoo world.
    Creeped me the fúck out.

There are still so many outstanding moments, Oldman in particular.

But the whole lolita undercurrent really leapt to the fore for me on the rewatch.

Are there really that many people who don't get the idea of satire? We have the likes of South Park on tv and it never really seems to make too many waves.
I think you could make Blazing Saddles again and the people complaining would just be a bunch of people who complain about everything else on twitter; people we largely ignore anyway.
I wonder if the PC brigade is a group whose importance highly inflated due to their visibility online and the counter-complainer need for a bogeyman to rail against.

Yeah I think there are loads of people who don't get it. Those people end up on both the PC vs "PC gone mad" argument. Whenever this topic comes up, Blazing Saddles is sited as a movie that couldn't be made today because its not PC. Those people never get that it's so PC its a "right on" movie. If it was remade, they'd pan it for being too PC but it was always a PC movie.

I always think South Park is a perfect example of how you can make this kind of vulgar satire now. I love South Park.

    I re-watched 12 Angry Men this afternoon.

That would need a new name and a much more diverse cast these days.

Prior had a hand in writing the script anyway and both himself and Little supported the liberal use of the word in the film. Brookes too has admitted he would not get away with it now but then there's no film!

They’re not commissioning the industry though these things still go ahead

Look here, one of the great cinematic moments of our time. Potential for all sorts of outrage but I didn’t hear it:

I suppose either way though it’s either diversity personified or the nightmare scenario. Depends on your perspective

    Probably.
Well it wouldn't get the green light at all I don't think.
A black comedy about a student who
tries to blow up his school and kill everyone.
    Great film all the same.

The wind that shakes the barley
    Michael Collins
In the name of the father

Why ? Because Ireland is full of West brits these days, more interested in the royals and what they wear as opposed to our actual national history.
    Happy easter my ar*e

Michael Collins is Hollywood romanticised ****e, if you want real history watch a documentary or crack open a book.
The Wind is WOI and Civil War for slow learners, it's not great as an entertainment, like watching a school play.

Did exactly the same myself felt weird to have recommended something so obviously creepy I had never seen the director's cut before but I used to love the film as a young lad particularly Gary Oldman so I could tell which scenes were new to me, they were all dubious. Sometimes a film was cut the way it was for cinema for a very good reason, in the normal version there is still a creepy implication in their relationship but it doesn't revel in it.

Well it basically says teens commit suicide for attention and paints teens who are suicidal as vain and superficial. That they do it to copy the cool kids.
