Coveney literally just said the current restrictions would likely be extended. Your post is wishful thinking.

Is that not what I said?
    Current restrictions will be extended

Worded harshly but it looks like if we cocoon the elderly for a while things can start to return toward normal.

I would like to see more detail on the deaths.

Yeah, all we have to do is indefinitely cocoon
    - everyone over 70
    - the 400k people with asthma
    - the 225k people with diabetes
    - everyone who has cancer or is recently recovered
    - everyone who has recently had a transplant
    - everyone who is pregnant

... that’s workable. No need to worry about how these people will go to work, get to medical appointments, do their shopping, or socialist. Sacrifice the lot of them because we can’t do a four week quarantine.

And hospitals will still be overwhelmed by patients as while those ages are the most vulnerable many many young people still require hospitalisation to beat this thing.

How do people still not understand this simple fact?

    Because it’s not a fact.

    It’s a projection

there are ten kids out side my house now kicking football together for 5 different houses
2 of their parents work in the health service in front line roles

who are we kidding with this lockdown, garda leaning in the windows of cars asking where they are going!
i see neighbours going walking together, planes still arriving from all over the world in dublin and no
    temparture checks or enforced quaratines.

all we are doing is slowing this a little bit, still going to happen, still going to overwhelm our health service and now
the economy is f**ked for another 10 years at least

Herd immunity, as more people get it the pressure eases off.

It needs to be a balanced exit strategy.

Take the old people out of the firing line, that reduces the death count, then gradually ease restrictions and see how many need assistance.

So exactly what we have already planned on doing once the curve has flattened enough, which is deffinitely not yet and probably wont be for another 2 weeks at least.

If you believe this will end Sunday week you are delusional.

There is no chance this ends for many many weeks. F*ck the economy for now. It's not important. It will recover when the time is right. Dead people can't recover.

The economy is not important. Right.

Ok using your logic what we will do quarantine everyone for the rest of time????

    Those people are already isolating

No one said we can’t do this for 4 weeks, any longer though and we need to consider the economy.

By April 12 the curve will be flattened sufficiently to reopen

Who has said they want it for three to six months and are happy not to be working?

Acceptance of a situation because of no alternative is not the same as being happy about it.

Who has said it's dangerous for themselves? It's concern for other people mostly.

given the state the economy is going to be i fear
how many people are going to die in coming years in an already crumbling health service that

    Projections are grim regarding that.

A study claimed that the last recession had a worse effect on life than covid.

But 18 more months of current restriction wont make it go away either. Just have to mitigate the risk with some control (tests, tracing) and ease out the restrictions

You actually couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. April 12 is around when we are expecting the peak in Ireland.

Seeing as we share a land border it would be nice if the UK and the Republic were synchronised.

For sure that would be a good.
Unfortunately the UK response to this crisis has been amongst the worst in the world for a 1st world country.

Another poster was asking should we follow their actions, that's what I was commenting on.

Yes, and that curve will be sufficiently flattened by then.

I’m sorry but people will have to get back to work, we can’t be paid to sit around doing nothing indefinitely.

Our kids will be picking up the bill for our inactivity

Dan O Brien was on earlier, he reckons if the economy can get started up again by summer the recovery could be quick but any longer and we are screwed.

Do you understand that peak means peak of the curve? That’s when the curve is at its highest point. Not when it has flattened.

Of course we are screwed. This is post-WW1 stuff. Hyperinflation, blame game and a massive war to follow.

Anyone who cannot see this and only short term is a danger to society.

That's not what it means either. Flattening the curve is about what height the peak reaches.
