Or is it conceited genetic inferiority masquerading as pride?

I have been struck by the prevailing use of the word heroes on social media in relation to the Aer Lingus staff flying down to China and back to collect some cargo. The flight duration is comparable to their routine flight to San Franciso with the only hardship incurred seeming to be that they have to spend the return leg resting in business class for their sins. It has been implied that these staff are volunteers through which the inference can be drawn no remuneration is being received but with the government paying the bill for the flights it would be in poor taste for this crew to be unpaid.

Apparently the crew who manned the first flight are on the Late Late show tonight.
Is this paddy whackery back slapping at its finest for the ole ole'ers or an exercise in how to turn a bad situation into a positive PR excercise.

Its called 'Rallying around the Flag' OP.

Yes it is a bit OTT but in times of national crisis the media will hop on any positive news story and blow it up beyond proportion.

If it makes people feel a bit more positive and gives them hope during times when all the news is negative then it is no harm at the end of the day. A bit cringeworthy yes but overall it has benefits for people who are under a lot of stress and worry.

The stuff they brought back is not up to scratch apparantly.

Interesting concerns raised by Conor Pope against the backdrop of the heroes label.

Government funded cargo flights vs alleged sharp consumer practice? Will be interesting to see how it plays out in the court of public opinion.
