Too early to prune laurel?

I have some Portuguese Laurel hedging, a large chunk of which is not doing very well due to shade and competition with other plants. I would like the hedging to thicken up if possible, they are quite scrawney and thin. I noticed that most of them have started sprouting upwards in the last week or two, green shoots all over…

I dont want them getting any taller. Is it too early to prune the tops of these?
