I dont miss pubs at all. Total rip-off with their prices. Its beyond me how so many young people can now afford a €9 meal on top of it together with taxis. Perhaps there spending all their hard earned cash there. I feel sorry for them though. No nightclubs etc. Wait until the recession hits. Pubs will feel it very badly I expect.

If they can afford blow, they can afford all of the above.

OK but specifically why would the EU get involved? They don't care that pubs in Ireland aren't open. How would publicans use the EU against the government?

    Restriction of trade.

You are not a million miles away here.

I hate pointing fingers, even at gubbermint, but there does appear to be a lobby for this coming from somewhere or other.

I do miss them and phuck the prices. If you drink 10 cans it costs you 25 quid. If you drink them in a pub it costs you 50 quid. At the end of the day you are only saving 25 quid to sit on your own in a gaff somewhere watching the box?

When you go to a pub you get to SOCIALISE. That's right. You get to bump into people who you only see down the pub. You get to UNWIND, that's right, you can relax and shoot the breeze. You get to catch up on vital local gossip, even the complete lies and bullshight being peddled. You get opinion outside of your own, very important to improving opine.

The concept that people are happy to continue in a less social society gives me the creeps and the heebie jeebies. A proper civil social life is very important to everyone. It is important from an egotistical perspective that people receive affirmation of their existence from fellow members of their community or whereabouts. Having a defined social cohesion keeps you stable and gives you rational. Everyone needs their back slapped and to be told they are right once in a while.

Yoga class or going to the gym is not the same either. Clubs do not count either, way too competitive and sometimes your team mates or golf buddies can take liberties, even unwittingly.

But a proper honest Public House is an important factor in Irish society. A place to behave, a place to misbehave slightly. A place to keep you grounded or a place for you to unwind and let loose. I have learnt some of the greatest of lifes' lessons within the confines of the boozer. They are more than meets the eye.

Whatever agenda they have or do not have with regards to changing our drinking culture, the VFI, all the pubs and the pub-goers will not play by the rules once we get a widespread vaccination. For now maybe, but long term not a hope.

This somewhere or other is worth a look.

These guys definitely want us to drink less and they are mainly funded by HSE and Dept. of Health.

Now I don't like MM but they've taken that out of context a little. He was being asked about pub crawls and he was basically saying how personal responsibility plays and role and that the same advice as usual will apply to keep your contacts low

I can see herd immunity long before a vaccine at this stage. The only people getting vaccinated if one ever arrives will be the old and vulnerable ( and that might not even be very safe for a while). I would not be holding your breath there.

Just a quickie and I think I know the answer - is the Dáil bar open? Are they serving food?

The independent. They're really doubling down on trying to end pubs as we know them for good this week.

    Restriction of trade.

It's already a deeply restricted trade and one publicans have fought tooth and nail to keep it that way.

It's not the only story they've ran. On the whole the publication is pushing strong on it.

OK again I ask specifically why would the EU get involved? Each member state is responsible for their own laws regarding

    public health
    industry
    culture
    tourism
education and training, youth and sport
    civil protection
    administrative cooperation

Public health: so how come Ireland couldn’t legally stop people from other EU arriving in Ireland??

Correct, though there was this interesting discussion about it.

I hate the definitive narrative of this, the way they are trying to spin it as if this "new normal" bull**** will be here forever. The use of terms such as "end of the traditional night out" and "new Covid era" are so bloody dramatic, and very obviously used to elicit a response - in this case more clicks for the Indo. Any rational person knows that all this "new normal" is a temporary measure, a compromise, and things will eventually return to the old normal. But the Indo, and other media organisations, are so obsessed with the hyperbole, they don't want to acknowledge that.

In fairness, why would they? One would assume (hope!) that these "rules" will be a thing of the past once a vaccine is rolled out. The government won't have a reason to implement the current rules at that point

Hard to know what will happen if there is an effective vaccine. Things change all the time. Remember the smoking ban and the drink driving limits being reduced. These have had effects on many pubs beyond what might have been expected. many have closed forever others now do food. There was already a move away from drinking pubs and it is said that a new habit forms after you repeat an action for 21 days. Far longer than that now for home/private beer garden drinkers.

I'd argue that home/private beer garden drinkers are probably the type who never frequented the pub much anyway. People will always want to socialise and congregate, there's been plenty of evidence of that even during the lockdown. The pub provides the ideal space for this. I agree habits change, but not the habit of a lifetime! It's a bit like saying that people would stop going to sporting events years ago when they first started televising them but, if anything, demand increased.

Roughly the same amount of cases as the week before, this is the reason some doctors want weekly figures released, not daily. It will stop the hysteria
