And judging by the haunted look of him, he well knows it.

You'd have a haunted look too if you dealt with all the stressful issues he does every day and worked those hours. Indeed, you probably wouldn't be fit to sit at your keyboard, even without the personal health issues he has.

I agree, bit of a cometh the hour cometh the man vibe about him.

I'd fundamentally disagree with him on many issues but I now have a lot of respect for him.

We wouldn't be in half this mess if he'd grounded flights from cv hotspots over a month ago. That bad decision has guaranteed a long term lockdown. The testing has been all over the place. And we left ordering PPE far too late. Thats not too mention hospital trolleys, NCH and cervical check scandals.

I have a lot of praise for the Irish people and frontline workers. Politicians as usual have been incompetent.

You can never ever please everyone if you are a politician..

No matter what politician is in whatever portfolio, he/she can be slated and criticise...

Fair enough. Allow me to rephrase it.

What would you say were his accomplishments as minister for health?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,466 ✭✭✭omerin

I wish politicians would stop saying that the restrictions are tough, difficult.... it's creating a negative mindset in people and planting seeds in people's heads and a future excuse if they decide to go against the rules …. "Simon Harris and Leo are saying this is tough Guard and I just needed to get out".

They shouldn't be communicating in a negative manner, the emphasis should be that the positive response from the kids to the parents to stay in are saving lives.

The restrictions are not tough, with one exception, I seem to be eating more :(

Ah come on. You cannot seriously say he done a good job has health minister. If you can you obviously never had to wait a year to see a specialist for crippling hip pain. Or never seen one of your loved ones wait on a hospital trolley. Or dont have a loved one who comes home from work regularly in tears because they dont have time to care for patients because they are stretched beyond belief.

Simon harris has had a good performance over the past few weeks but he could have put half the energy into the past 5 years to give us something of a health service.

Simon Harris is doing well. He's obviously sick but giving his all.

Now being responsible for building the most expensive hospital on the planet will be in his legacy. But it's something for another day. He's doing a lot to redeem himself.

    Such a prophet with hindsight..

This fight is being fought by far more than the frontline health workers.

Yes, huge credit to them, but you know, they, like many others, including our leaders, are simply doing their jobs..

This fight is being driven by the people we elect..it trickles down to everyone else.

I mentioned the possible demise of the EU on here a few weeks ago and was met with derision.

Since 2016 we've seen nationalism raise its head in many forms around the world. From Brexit, Trump, our own vote for Peter Casey in the presidential election.

How did Casey do in the general election, he didn't even get his deposits back

The health service cries are as old as the fooking hills..

Long before he took up the role.

We have a pretty good health service. I’d rather be living here in Ireland than ANYWHERE else in the world right now.

Ah the old hindsight nonsense. Half the country as well as numerous doctors and experts called for flights to be grounded at the time.

From another thread a few people seem to be getting long awaited test results. Maybe they have been catching up on some of the back log. If so today's numbers of positive tests could rise significantly.

Weren't we due some results from a German lab?

    Not hindsight nonsense at all..

You blaming him for not shutting down our airports?

You can bet had he, there would be a group on slating him and others for this

    Cannot won with people...

Btw, governments act on expert advice...no matter who is in power, they act on advice...

I agree. But he had plenty of time to do something about it. You can't say oh it's always been poor so accept it. I will never accept that we have a bad health service and that's that. It's always been due to political inaction and failure to take drastic measures. Perhaps if we had of declared an emergency in the health service years ago we could have fixed things.

Why would anyone now be slating them for stopping flights to zones that were riddled with virus?

You're right on the expert advice bit. I fully agree with you that Holohan was asleep at the wheel.

Every single portfolio at any time in the past, present or future will have praise and criticisms..simple as that..

And yes, we actually do have to accept it, because that is life...always and forever...we can keep working to tweak and improve and change; but it will never be accepted that all is “perfect.” No such thing.

Harris for me, stands out as good. It’s that simple. I don’t have to dissect every angle and every decision and every result or failure.

No press conference on weekends. A statement is released to journalists sometime between 5:30 and 6:00.

    Thanks for that.

It seem difficult for the HSE to explain exactly how many tests are taking place or if the German test results have been returned. Their figures seem more aspirational than anything. Once a week they give the testing figures, I think Tuesday.

Strong leaders don't really tend to care if they get slated, as long as they're making the right decisions.

Weak leaders tend to either avoid making hard decisions, dither/tiptoe around them... or just hide behind token words like "expert advice".

You know, the sort of "expert advice" that our CMO was giving around nursing homes and whether or not to cancel Paddy's day etc.

Who was giving the expert advice, when they completely shat the bed around the Cheltenham debacle?

    Yes, expert advice indeed...
