Were they not worried about the south taking off due it being poorer?

Too many different variables : the flights mightn't be allowed, the Lanzarote hotels mightn't be allowed open, travel between Ireland and Spain might be restricted etc.

You're not just depending on one factor but loads of different things.

Foresight is what was lacking. Considering the nature of the situation I’d rather the political people went overkill and prevent disease kill. Plan for worst case, bonus if it doesn’t happen. I’d rather the business groups in the aftermath rage from their high stools about what the economy lost, over families and loved ones in despair over family and friends who they WILL loose. I’d rather we were all for a time poor and alive over a significant number dead.

Re supermarkets it's all ancedotal but have you guys seen how many London bus drivers have died from this? Think it was around 10 at last check. I'm wondering if even being at the front of the bus as they are but in such a compact environment greatly increases their exposure compared to supermarket staff?
Could be. There were a few studied in China with thsi virus and SARS before it that showed travelling in buses and taxis really increased risks, for both passengers and drivers.

What I've noticed with the British reports into younger deaths there seems to be an awful lot of Black and South Asian folks dying, not just bus drivers, but medical staff. White faces seem to be rare enough in the reports by comparison. That and a lot, if not most seem to be heavy set people. To the degree that if I see a UK report about youngish person X has died, I expect to see a non White face and/or being overweight. Now in the US Black folks are being hit very badly, but they're more likely to be poorer and working jobs that put them in the public space, but is there more to it I wonder?

Yep and also they still go out for groceries and medicine, so this gives the chance for spread of the virus too, as I’m sure there are plenty of asymptomatic people going to buy their food too.

Honestly, this should be stickied information in the forum.
When the median is corrected to 84.5 why not.

Italy has been pretty consistent this week. As long as it's no longer growing day over day things are going OK.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,950 ✭✭✭polesheep

I don’t understand why people throw out this ‘normally die’ argument, as if it’s supposed to make everything ok. If 1400 normally die every day, it mean 2400 died yesterday. 1400 normally in total from a range of varying ailments.

It still leaves nearly 1000 for this one thing. This quarantine is really bringing out the stupid in some people.

Eh, no. Some of the people who died from Covid19 would have died anyway and been part of the 1,400. But you are correct regarding the last part of your post.

At 15% positive rate you could estimate the no. of unconfirmed symptomatic cases from that.

The referrals/day would almost be a better metric that the confirmed cases at this point.

From looking at the test threads on here, they is many waiting on results and also tests

Spain think they've hit peak. You can expect a good number of deaths for a while, but the overall level of increase in new cases is declining for both.

Hoping against the odds things pick up and holidays go ahead in July. Have 11 nights in Lanzarote booked. Any thoughts?
It depends what your circumstances are. I have a holiday booked late in the autumn and I probably won't be going now. I'm doing my best not to get this virus and hopefully it will stay like this. The risk of picking it up going away abroad is to much for me and then spending time abroad sick doesn't appeal to me. Or I don't want to bring the virus home. Its all too much risk for me.

I would give the government and health officials a solid 7/10 thus far especially in light of the unmitigated disasters unfolding in the US, UK and the Netherlands.

Having said that, the three areas where we underestimated the problem were:

    1) Not cancelling flights with people travelling from Northern Italy for the rugby (and temperature screening in general at airports a la South Korea/China
    2) Not ordering people likely returning from Cheltenham to self-isolate (using mobile data if necessary)
    3) Not locking down every single nursing home in the country at the end of February.

IMHO I've long reckoned that's a huge part of it alright H. If you decide to go to the shops and you live in the average Irish gaff, the only place you share space, air and surfaces is inside the shop. If you just go for a walk or run around your neighbourhood you're effectively sharing bugger all. If one of your neighbours is infected you can avoid them without even thinking about it. Now imagine you live on the fifth floor of an apartment block in Madrid or Milan or Paris and a neighbour has it, it's damn near impossible to avoid shared surfaces, spaces and air they've been around, before you even leave the front door. Just think how many people would be touching that front door every single day.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

No matter how grim and negative, I think all parties tasked over Covid19 here in ROI like HSE, CMO and DOH should be honest in their briefings, it is hard to know what is true when medical professionals, media and politicians are contradicting one another

    Data is cumulative

    NR = Not Reported

▲ = Daily case increase averaged over the past 10, 7 and 3 days and from day 1

    ■ = Daily case reporting change averaged over the past 10, 7 and 3 days and from day 1

Source: Department of Health and the Health Protection Surveillaence Centre.

*"Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data suplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting. Recovered statistics can only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed.

** Due to the above issue with reporting of revovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

Eh, no. Some of the people who died from Covid19 would have died anyway and been part of the 1,400. But you are correct regarding the last part of your post.

Some are believed to. Its nothing but a theory, and a pointless argument until the annual mortality rates for each nation are published. Nobody will know until then.

Having said that I was sceptical of the theory until recently when I read about the 2003 heatwave in Europe last night and how 17,000 people died in France in June and July but the annual mortality rate was the exact same as othe years, obviously it killed the most vulnerable people who would have died anyway that year. Thats the theory of some posters I saw going around and obviously its not completely bs then

A week feels like a month at the moment. How long ago did Italy start getting really bad? Was it this time last month or longer? It feels like years ago...
Italy's first cases were about Feb 15 so yeah two decades ago!

    can't be true.

Poster is right. About 53 for a male apparently. Frankie Boyle used to joke about it in his usual dark humour way.
