Coveney always had his ambitions on getting a UN gig. Varadkar wants an EU gig. They will put all of our wellbeing at risk to get themselves there.

The day Slovenia closed their border to Italy, the likes of Pascal Donohue and Harris were banging on about hurting Italian peoples feelings and free movement is at the core of the EU. And Slovenia, considering their proximity have done a tremendous job.

There is a clique there that are absolutely brainwashed by the EU.

Even when they're closing their borders on us, we're still open to them. The level of sycophancy is bordering on pathological

That looks like something from an Aldi or Lidl brochure

Party table* with built in barbecue, stereo bluetooth speakers & handheld satellite receiver
All that's missing is a turntable
    *Urban guerilla gear sold separately

Something like this might be better

There was a small antibody study done in Finland, they took samples of people who attended hospital for non-coronavirus related issues. This was done over three weeks (March 23rd, March 30th, April 6th). The first week's samples had 0.7% positives for Coronavirus antibodies, 2nd week had none, and 3rd week had 3.4%.

It was only ~150 samples per week, but it could indicate the actual number of infected people in the area are dozens of times higher than detected. This was in the greater Helsinki area hospital district, where they currently have about 2000 confirmed infections.

Did they? The Slovenian closing of several border crossings with Italy was barely even mentioned in the Irish media.

That was the same day the St Patrick's Festival was cancelled and 48 hours before the schools were closed

Well it was a Simon Harris initiative so all the talk about tens of thousands and why it went silent is due to most not being suitable. 14,000 out of 72,000 deemed suitable and of the 14,000 only 1,300 are in the process of being made available.

Taiwan had a set of unique restrictions based on SARS which had nothing to do with lockdown in the W. European sense. They didn't confine people to their houses or shut down economic activity (every article about Taiwan says 'restaurants, bars, schools, universities and offices remain open'.)

They had border controls, comprehensive testing, early contact tracing, and an early ramp up in mask production.

There is no and has never been any lockdown in Taiwan. Neither for SARS in 2003 or Covid now.
They use strict quarantine and immigration control, contact tracing , minimal testing and mandatory usage of masks in many places , also temp testing and social distancing. They never let community transmission take off so no need for lockdown, kids still in school people still working . No new local cases today again.

Partly . But it's also the political willpower to take controversial decisions early on. Taiwan banned all entry of Chinese , HKers and Macau months ago. Extended school holidays way back at start of Feb.
Also started quarantining people early on and surveying all incoming visitors.

You need to have a leader who is willing to lead. It's not like those decisions are accepted off the bat ! Taiwan is a democracy there are different interests and voices. Quality of leadership very much matters.

Leo and Co allowed flights to come in from Italy when the epidemic was already widespread there. Didn't ban flights, didn't quarantine people, didn't even question them coming in . The reasons, pressure from the EU and business people at home. Leaders need to take tough decisions.

You need to quarantine people coming in and enforce the quarantine. Taiwan had 50k people under strict home quarantine at one point. If you don't quarantine incoming people they can always start another cluster of infection .

    Madness !

A lot of the posts this kind of recruitment drive would be great for would be the kinds of admin used to process this kind of recruitment drive... :pac:

My flatmate signed up, he's a fairly ideal candid having worked in healthcare abroad. He's been given holding contact a few times, ie "We're struggling to get through everyone who signed up but we haven't forgotten you"

While I assumed it was primarily a PR thing, I don't find it difficult to believe they got more applicants than expected and they're still working through them, it's a fairly unprecedented program and the need for extraordinary support staff will be long term, having that kind of register is an asset for stuff like that. Anyone who's applied for a civil service role before will be familiar with their slightly infuriating panel system.

He actually pointed out the uselessness of it as people could have flown in from elsewhere in pre-lockdown days in Italy. Evidence on the efficacy of such a measure is dubious anyway. Here's a piece on the US "ban".

The mayor of Los Angeles has said today the city will not be allowing any concerts, shows, sporting events or mass gatherings of any kind until 2021.

Expect this to be theme in the coming days.

    Fake news alert.
Garcetti indicated during the conference call that “large gatherings such as concerts and sporting events may not be approved in the city for at least 1 year,” according to the email.

What I've learnt from the CMO is that if he has the number he'll give it. They were down to about 6K outstanding tests at the beginning of the week and they expected it to be cleared this week.

I have had to make my own decision, in line with my own conscience which pretty much ties in with the above. And obtained the PPE in early february. Most community trained Cpr'ers wont have the ppe. Maybe a set of Ppe also needs to placed with every defib?

    I love a good graph.

Just to reiterate we are still in a situation where only 0.03% of the world have been infected with this.

To me a few things stick out from that.

    1. Lockdowns are working

    2. Perhaps this disease isn't as contagious as we think.

    3. Maybe testing is really low. If so we have to ask ourselves the question as to why. Perhaps this isn't as critical as we are being led to believe.

Some interesting comments coming out of Holland
"A study of Dutch blood donors has found that around 3% have developed antibodies against the new coronavirus, health authorities said, an indication of what percentage of the Dutch population may have already had the disease.

The head of the National Institute for Health (RIVM), Jaapvan Dissel, disclosed the results during a debate withparliament.

"This study shows that about 3% of Dutch people have developed antibodies against the coronavirus," Van Dissel said."You can calculate from that, it's several hundred thousand people" in a country of 17 million."

There are 28,158 confirmed coronavirus cases in the Netherlands, but only the very ill and healthcare workers are currently being tested.

Great to see some leaders really understand the reproductive number. Fun fact, you can only estimate the R0 number effectively by testing effectively.

Wonder what the margin of error is on the R0 number. Must be massive. Big difference between 1.1 and 1.0. That's why we must err on side of caution. with regards easing restrictions. We should also wear masks. If you can interrupt one line of transmission then we should.
