Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone have a general idea what formula and parameter values get us an R value < 1?

Well a lot of the homeless people have actually got apartments now in Dublin anyway. Peter McVerry was putting them into empty holiday rentals. They are delighted. At least one good thing.

If "growth in the community is close to zero", can we equate that to there being no significant risk going to the supermarket? Some have said there are big risks in doing so, but there have not been many cases of staff falling sick that we know of.

OK, I'm only comparing number of infected people here, I'm not looking at death rate.
Italy and Ireland are almost at the same level in terms of infected people per million, that's where the comparison stands
Regarding the death rate you are correct, we are doing much better in Ireland compared to Italy or other countries, like Spain. That's another analysis all together

    Hi Mic 1972

the numbers reports are close, but death rate is harder to hide. look at SK or Singapore and you will see that places that test a lot see that 1.5% even 2-3% of deaths as a % of cases, when you test people affected with symptoms you get more cases but death rate, the death rate will be the same, people will die if they are tested or not or reported in cases.

the true number of people who got covid19 are the % of people who die. that % of people who die might be 1,2,3,4% but it should not be Italy 13% rate of death.

    Coyote

I wouldnt, you just dont know how your body's immune system will react. Im mid 30s and I wouldnt fancy it.

I feel kind of the same but I'm getting increasingly fatalistic about catching it as the people I live with don't give a **** and take no precautions.

The hospitals would be over run if all the infected sick patients who needed advanced care from nursing homes were in hospital. And, they should be . They deserve a chance too. They are not all seriously ill with underlying conditions. They have a right at a chance the same as any of us.

Thank you. It gives me hope to see that someone gets this.

Question re restrictions - I have an elderly aunt i.e. well over 70, living about 6km away, whose broadband has gone down (and I suspect it is not an issue with her provider). Would it be acceptable to the Gardaí if I travelled to fix such a problem.

Before people say wtf etc, she is alone and without broadband the world would become a very small place.

    Thanks.

I think we have two choices come May 5th. There is probably no point going for a holding middle ground until a vaccine comes along which realistically could be 12-18 months away at the earliest.

    1. Enforce the lockdown even more - go for an Wuhan/Hong Kong/Taiwan attempt at eliminating it completely. This might mean two whole months of extreme measures, far more extreme than anything so far - also includes shutting the NI border, shutting down all civilian air traffic and particularly shutting down civilian traffic on ferries (we know from the Birr funeral what a joke the ferry issue is). Isolate away from their familes all positive cases, use mobile phone location to track cases, etc

    2. Lift the lockdown and let it run its course - cocooning as best we can for the next year those in the vulnerable categories and identifying as best we can those most susceptible such as those in the obese or diabetes categories. Let everyone else return to work. Even encourage the spread with the renewal of sports events and the likes - aim for gradually increasing herd immunity in the longer term.

The holding pattern we are in right now is just not sustainable from an economic or social point of view. It has to be one of the options I mentioned, either go for more restrictions to try stamp it out fully and after that restrict and quarantine visitors to the country, or else allow it run its course.

It will be virtually impossible to stop the spread of the virus, so Option 1 won't work.

Option 2 seems the most logical and practical solution. Allow it to spread in as controlled a manner as possible by gradually lifting restictions, while shielding the most vulnerable. Herd immunity is our best hope—a vaccine is a long way off if it can be developed at all and even then it mightn't be particularly effective (like the flu vaccine).

Remember when Sinn Fein won all those seats in the General Election and people were saying the country was f*cked?

    That was gas.

No data here. Just some pretty poor charts with little or no background information.

    CFR = Case fatality rate
    NR = Not reported

Source: Department of Health and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

    * Daily increase numbers on these dates represent both new cases and older cases reported from Germany which results in skewed daily % increases and average case reporting % changes, numbers are broken down as:-
    Day|Date|New Irish Cases|German Cases
    42|10/04/20|480|1035
    43|11/04/20|553|286
    44|12/04/20|430|297
    45|13/04/20| 527|465
    46|14/04/20|548|284
    47|15/04/20|657|411
    48|16/04/20|629|95

** "Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data supplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting.

Recovered statistics are only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed. Updated on 15/04/20 - The WHO reporting criteria has been changed recently to eliminate the 2 test requirement before reporting as recovered, now an outcome report is sent within one month of initial notification or when an outcome is known, the available health outcomes are either “recovered/healthy”, “not recovered", “death", “unknown" or “other", weather this helps create more accurate recovery numbers or skews them further is yet to be seen.

*** Due to the above issue with reporting of recovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

    Hi Mic 1972

the numbers reports are close, but death rate is harder to hide. look at SK or Singapore and you will see that places that test a lot see that 1.5% even 2-3% of deaths as a % of cases, when you test people affected with symptoms you get more cases but death rate, the death rate will be the same, people will die if they are tested or not or reported in cases.

the true number of people who got covid19 are the % of people who die. that % of people who die might be 1,2,3,4% but it should not be Italy 13% rate of death.

    Regards

    Coyote

    .

I was only comparing the number of infected people per million with Italy, the number of infected people is not related to deaths. Your reasoning makes sense to me but it's not related to the comparison i was making

Regardless of what the true stats are from China, it's true that Wuhan has opened back up

What Merkel told the German population today to prepare them for the long haul
If one person infects one other person, we can cope with that. If one person infects 1.1 people, our system collapses in October. If one person infects 1.2 people, it will collapse in July. And if one person infects 1.3 people, it will collapse in June.

If "growth in the community is close to zero", can we equate that to there being no significant risk going to the supermarket? Some have said there are big risks in doing so, but there have not been many cases of staff falling sick that we know of.

Or indeed lack of mask wearing.

How have we reached near zero community growth with the supposed (and I am not disagreeing or agreeing) risks of supermarket and lack of masks? Those 2 elements having been regularly discussed as being the main outstanding risks in the community right now.

You missed my point unfortunately. I wasn’t being ugly
We're looking at a (hopefully) once in a century situation. Perhaps there isn't a sufficient word to adequately describe it. The homeless situation, the lack of supply and the rental affordability was correct to describe as a crisis.

It's not a competition nor are they comparable. And it is ugly to diminish one because of the other because I understood your point just fine.

    Thanks.

when i reply to a quote i feel more like i'm replying to a letter or email then I follow what i was taught as polite way to reply even when i disagree with someone(I still might be wrong about the idea) but feel it's less like a flame war and more a disagreement that people could resolve

regarding your questions i think people/police would understand and approve.
from your point i would use any make any mask you can or have as it would be hard to think if a few months if something happen you had not taken every chance to protect her. the risk is very very small but everyone who makes it less is doing there part.

side note i would love to think people started to be more polite on the internet due to me using "Regards" but i would also love to win the lotto. think i have more chance of winning the lotto

I can tell you firsthand that such a sweeping generalisation is far from correct. Different cultures have differences but particularly from a European comparison, the differences are far from vast.

There are plane loads of people arriving into Ireland every day and I was not allowd to attend an elderly relatives funeral.

That was his point. Reduce the numbers down to manageable proportions but trying to get it down to 0 would be a total waste of time - it would be doable, but at the cost of your society no longer even existing at any meaningful level.

We could actually get it down to zero in a couple of months. This would reduce the chances of community infection hugely. Those with symptoms would still need to self isolate. And we'd have to restrict visitors to the country.

But it would mean the elderly could meet their children and grandchildren with low risk of infection.
