The decline of the Journal.ie

Am I an asshole for welcoming the decline of the Journal.ie? Their entertainment/comedy section The Daily Edge was discontinued a few months ago and now their business section fora.ie has been shuttered. The Journal itself seems to be now desperately soliciting submissions from the public in an attempt to keep the cog wheels turning (but they won't pay you of course).

The turnover of journalists seemed to be very high. There were new faces under the articles every month so I can only imagine what a hellish work culture existed in the office. I use the term "journalists" loosely of course as they most likely hired kids fresh out of college with a 2:2 in their communications studies degree. No actual journalist worth their salt would degrade themselves by signing on with a click bait site.

No actual journalism seemed to take place either. They specialised in churning out listicles (top 10 crisp brands in Ireland!!!) or regurgitating press releases that popped up in their email inbox.

And I won't even mention the utterly toxic comments sections that was the real bread and butter of the site...

    Will you miss the Journal?

Don't slag off crisps, the low blood sugar brigade around here will bite your head off.

I see it mentioned on here occasionally but other than that I never hear about it ‘in real life’ and have never visited the site (except just now).

You seem remarkably familiar with its content.

    What's wrong with a 2:2?

I read the journal regularly and it’s a good news source for my needs

The fecker probably scraped a pass and is jealous of the big shots with their 2.2’s.

It was never anything other than utter scutter, I can only think that the btl comments are mainly from banned boards accounts.

The comments section alone should have closed this crap down years ago

Don't think Fora ever took off, or that the Daily Edge was ever looked at in isolation from the Journal.

I used to dislike it, but mostly for the commenters, and a lot of the articles had a very unobjective slant. But I think it has been a lot better the last couple of years, which might be down to the editor Sinead O'Carroll (?).

The 42 is a part of the organisation and I'll be sad to see them go. They've done some brilliant analysis pieces on rugby and their podcasts are a great listen.

People don't want to pay for journalism, so you get sites like The Journal. It isn't even a particularly bad example of clickbait journalism. They have a couple of decent hacks working for them. Be a shame to see it go.

It really cannot be underestimated how much damage Google and Facebook have done to civil discourse, the media, and investigative journalism.

I always found it a soulless, copy paste outfit

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

They did top class analysis on a Monday of GAA games.

    Typical Journal.ie commentator:
Don't ever read the article, just the headline. Get outraged. Get into a never-ending back and forth with a fellow dole-lifer that nobody else will ever read. Repeat with every single article on the site. Fake twitter profile is obligatory. It wouldn't surprise me if the rumours were true and that the biggest troll accounts were run by the Journal staff to stir the pot and generate clicks.

Hat tip for stealing your work and using it in our site.

“Murray the K” Kinsella does some great analysis

It's not the only one of distilled properties that has the staff troll for clicks and views ;)

For most news it’s ok as a generic “oh this happened today?” resource. For opinions or anything else it’s pointless, a feminist one sided rag. Just like their section The Daily Edge a few years back, snowflake college literary students given a platform to ply their woe is me I am wahmen ****e on the masses.

The comment section is the only thing that has kept it going.

Was banned from commenting, haven't used it since, funny I was banned , when often the comments I made , would get the most amount of likes. Like rte etc , they don't want any debate, it's their PC wont someone think of the children way or the highway!

Surely they are taking a big hit with reduced ad revenue because of c19, I can't imagine a subscription model would work for them. This could be the end.

dont forget the numerous articles of people were "outraged" by (insert tv show/movie/sjw crusade etc) and they throw up 3 tweets on the so called "outrage"

Where will Matt Cooper get his "contributors" from now

Eh, do you guys realise that this site is part of the same group? I would imagine the Journal is more profitable than boards so if the Journal fails...

People still pay for the Indo and other papers and they spout as much crap as the Journal.

Just like the music industry and many others that have been decimated by the spread of the internet journalism needs to modernise or it'll die.

This article was the epitome of the Journal's holier-than-thou PC preaching shtick for me. You're not allowed to enjoy anything. Everything is racist and offends me https://www.dailyedge.ie/dublin-hip-hop-duo-versatiles-racist-lyrics-4262511-Oct2018/
