    Don't they own boards?

This article was the epitome of the Journal's holier-than-thou PC preaching shtick for me. You're not allowed to enjoy anything. Everything is racist and offends me https://www.dailyedge.ie/dublin-hip-hop-duo-versatiles-racist-lyrics-4262511-Oct2018/

Now you have to tell us what the comment was that got you banned :P

Calling miggled Higgins the hobbit one too many times , during the run up to the presidential elections !
In fairness it was just the straw that broke the camels back :)

Let's just say I have my suspicions that Margaret cash is running the journal show!

Thought they were one and the same but seems Journal Media own the Journal, Daft ie and Adverts.

    Distilled Media owns boards

    Could be wrong.

Never been a big reader of the journal, some good journalists started there though (Gavin Reilly).

Thought fora.ie was quite good actually.

Was banned from commenting, haven't used it since, funny I was banned , when often the comments I made , would get the most amount of likes. Like rte etc , they don't want any debate, it's their PC wont someone think of the children way or the highway!

I often wondered did they get paid for every article they did on the horrors of direct provision. Definitely pushing an agenda. Never bothered to sign up for commenting but dissenting comments seemed to have a short shelf life!
The 42 is/ was decent for sport.

They had good articles on the league of Ireland tbf and a weekly chat with a popular player in the 80s or 90s

Looks like fora.ie stories will be covered by the journal....

And suddenly out of nowhere, my respect for the Journal grew.

OP, on your original question “Am I am asshole?” I think relishing in any business failing and job losses doesn’t say great things about you as a person.

42 and the Fora are excellent imo, for free news sites. Sorry for the people who are in risk of losing their jobs tbh.

G O'Doherty seems happy that the Journal.ie is in trouble, perhaps that is reason enough to support it!

    Not according to boards terms...

    https://www.boards.ie/content/terms
Boards.ie is owned and operated by Journal Media Limited

The hacks from Journal.ie grub up a lot of their 'stories' straight from Boards itself. A number of them post on Boards to see who they can wind up to create another article.

    A bunch of ****.

Anyway, journalists should be taxed at 110%. Columnists should be taxed at 900%.

Boards and Journal.ie deserve each other.

Ah, the journal comments section, where the people banned from boards go...

Long may it continue, we don't want them back, thanks.

Ha, fair play! For some reason Higgins is given special protection from criticism in this country. Remember the water protester who was brought into court and fined for calling him a "parasite midget"? President Trump gets called much, much worse on a daily basis without the bat of an eyelid. Makes me wonder why the media feel muzzled when it comes to Higgins. I've heard rumours about his "special relationship" with his driver Kevin... ;)

Galaxy-brain logic right there. We shouldn't relish in an organ harvesting factory in China closing because "muh job losses". Ethics? What are they?

Very agenda driven but if you were loved or hated and getting replies they let you stay. All good for the search engines.

I don't recall getting banned but my posts never show. Just as well, more fool me for getting involved

Am I an asshole for welcoming the decline of the Journal.ie? Their entertainment/comedy section The Daily Edge was discontinued a few months ago and now their business section fora.ie has been shuttered. The Journal itself seems to be now desperately soliciting submissions from the public in an attempt to keep the cog wheels turning (but they won't pay you of course).

The turnover of journalists seemed to be very high. There were new faces under the articles every month so I can only imagine what a hellish work culture existed in the office. I use the term "journalists" loosely of course as they most likely hired kids fresh out of college with a 2:2 in their communications studies degree. No actual journalist worth their salt would degrade themselves by signing on with a click bait site.

No actual journalism seemed to take place either. They specialised in churning out listicles (top 10 crisp brands in Ireland!!!) or regurgitating press releases that popped up in their email inbox.

And I won't even mention the utterly toxic comments sections that was the real bread and butter of the site...

    Will you miss the Journal?

Surprised SF HQ don't donate a few quid to keep that mouthpiece going.

It's a tabloid site. Grand for headlines ****e for content.

The Shinnerbot phenomenon is bizarre, isn't it? Judging from the online support of SF in comment sections and discussion boards across the web, you'd think they would win every election in a landslide. But we all know this isn't the case. ;)

I believe Boards.ie even has a private Republican forum where Shinnerbots organize to raid certain threads and rig polls. It may have been closed in the past so I could be mistaken.

What is the current state of affairs then and would it be fair to say that it is the same core group of shareholders behind all these sites (boards, Journal, Adverts etc)?

There is a conspiracy theory forum you know, more suited there

There's only room for one Journal in Ireland.

    The Farmers Journal.

I read the journal regularly and it’s a good news source for my needs

    It's nothing special.

The Journal has a nice user-friendly layout and its FactCheck and The Irish For... columns are always worth reading. The Daily Edge was also a fun read in its early days, before it turned into a gossip magazine.

The comments section is shocking though; I try not to read it but occasionally some masochistic instinct makes me scroll down and it never ceases to amaze me just how ignorant, bigoted and downright nasty people can be when they can hide behind usernames.

The Irish Times is in decline as well not only as a result of drastically reduced advertising revenue at present. I would miss it were it to expire. I would miss the Journal too. It's an easy read, well designed and laid out and the comments from members can be amusing, insightful, crass, bitchy or just plain dumb - just like Boards, really.

Really, most articles in mainstream media are copy and pasted government or garda press releases.

Don't fool yourself that there is much journalism going on.

TheJournal.ie was/is another government mouthpiece. In the final run-up to the 8th Referendum they blatantly altered their previous "Factchecks" on Cora Sherlock and changed all her "proven facts" to "unproven". A despicable thing to do regardless of your opinion on that referendum. Stunts like that hand Trump ammunition to call foul and "Fake News". Sometimes I wonder do some ever really see themselves as the architects of their own downfall?
