This seemingly escaped my usual news feed. After a young man had a traffic incident involving a police vehicle, a small group gathered/rioted in protest. A gun of some sort was stolen and fired (upwards) in the process. Apparently 43 people have been arrested.

Previous to hearing about this I didn't know that riots were relatively common in Belgium, I can't recall having heard about the anti austerity riot(s) in 2014.

What can be done to prevent riots like this?

If something similar were to happen in Ireland, how do you think the Garda would react? What of similarity has already happened here?

I might look into the yellow vest protesters in France and bring that into the conversation at some point, as well as the HK protests.

The first video shows the size of the crowd confronting the police, while the second video shows the crowd smashing up the police vehicle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSijz2UISek

Do you prefer the Original Laughing Cow or the Light one?

There seems to be other variations available but I haven’t tried them.

Wouldn’t be a fan of either, I stick to real cheese and have hopes to start making my own soon ;)

We’ll leave that at that and let the rest of the replies be on topic!

A quick Google search of this area tells us that it is a poor , unsafe, high crime area with a majority immigrant population.

A youth on a moped tried to flee when stopped at a checkpoint. He ended up driving down the wrong side of the road, hit a police car and died.
His pals decided to get together and throw stones at police.
    Nuff said. Case closed

Eh...did you not omit an important piece of information in your synopsis?
The riots followed the death of a 19-year-old on Friday night. The man, identified as Adil, was riding a scooter down Quai de l'Industrie after evading a police check, when he crashed into another police van sent for reinforcement. Following his death, some had issued calls for a rally in protest, despite the current ban on public gatherings amid the coronavirus outbreak.

I absolutely should have, and thought that I did, in the sentence where I mentioned what caused the riot. That was a massive oversight while writing the post and a mistake. My bad, I take ownership of that slip up. Thankfully anyone that reads the article will see it.

It happens, seems like a genuine error. :)

Happens in Dublin too. When that young lad was killed on his bike at Christmas a few years ago, the locals obstructed the Gardaí who arrived so they could hide the bikes. Many incidents with shootings or stabbings in rough areas develop into public order issues when the Gardaí arrive.

    They're not Belgians.

Don't import hostile forces, don't let them not integrate, and most importantly don't let their values and culture be tolerated.

The only riots I can remember in Belgium is when the Liverpool supporters rioted at the Heysdel stadium and killed 39 Juventus fans
