Did someone have a link a while back to a breakdown of where cases are popping up? I saw someone had a screenshot of a breakdown of towns in Kerry up on facebook in comments but I don't know where it was from.

As expected, 75% of cases in Cork & Kerry are cluster related. Seems as if we're being unlucky with the vast size of clusters.

"Figures published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) show that in the 14-days up to October 1st, 566 cases of Covid-19 were reported in the community healthcare organisation (CHO) 4 area which comprises Cork and Kerry.

Of these, 415 cases, or 73 per cent, were associated with clusters."

The national figures show a consistent percentage increase in cases week-on-week since the end of June so that suggests it's the general relaxation of restrictions then that has driven this, and not specifically the reopening of schools.

There needs to be an immediate clampdown on all unnecessary indoor socialising IMO. Restrict pubs and restaurants nationally to outdoor & takeaway only. Maybe close off-licences early too.

Instead we open pubs, have communions with after-parties, have a full return to school (even a 4-day week leaving one yeargroup at home a day wud have eased things), fill school buses to max capacity and had a free-for-all on staycations.

Stupidity has us where we are now

According to local gossip, which of course may or may not be true, being as Listowel is famous for fiction, and the curtain twitchers operate the most prolific rumour machine in the Northern Hemisphere, the 21 cases relate to a secondary school, and that a member of the same family that triggered the spread of the virus in the national school, was responsible for the latest spread.

I'm 65/35 towards believing it, as the secondary school has apparently been contacting parents with a view to getting all the other kids tested straight away.

Someone did say that the national school hasn't had their First Communion day yet, so who knows where it sprang from.

That has a ring of truth to it by what I'm hearing.

The virus is not spreading in pubs in Kerry, it’s in the homes where ould Shiela’s are swanning down Lidl wine.

They only reopened wet pubs in late sept. From the few stories I've heard it's only a matter of time before a few lead to spread of the virus. Regulations not being observed.

    Time will tell.

It's far too early to be pinning this on the pubs that opened last week. College has a lot to answer for, a huge Kerry crowd are up and down to cork with the last few weeks. It's inevitable that some percentage of them will be bringing something back

Of courses it's spreading in pubs. They are not possessed of some magical virus-suppressing property.

It's spreading in all indoor settings where people are coming in contact with each other.

So I have just had an email from my child's school advising of a positive case. Class contacts of the child have been notified and will self isolate.

It then goes to say that school will be open as usual tomorrow and your child should attend !!!!!!!! I am not too sure about this bit.

    Content of letter:

A confirmed case of COVID-19 in your child's school has been notified to the Department of Public Health HSE-South.

A public health risk assessment has been undertaken. The parents of any children who have been identified to be close contacts of the confirmed case are being contacted and advised accordingly.
If your child has not been identified as a close contact at this time, your child does not need a test for Covid-19, they can continue to attend school, and no further actions are required at this time.
If your child develops any symptoms suggestive of Covid-19 infection (such as a cough, a fever, loss or change in sense of taste or smell), please do not send your child to school. Contact your GP and begin restricting your child's movements. Restricted movement means avoiding contact with other people and social situations as much as possible. It means that your child stays at home and:

    Does not go to school
    Does not use public transport
Does not have visitors in your home
Does not go to the shops or pharmacy, unless absolutely necessary
Keeps away from older people, anyone with an underlying medical condition and pregnant women

The Department of Public Health HSE-South is monitoring the school situation closely.

Unless your child is in that child’s class then it’s been normal practice by the schools to send kids from the other classes in as normal. Obviously it’s up to you if you want to send your child in.

I would be interested in a poll of boardsies at this point, who would send their child to school after a positive case.

I really think its wise to keep him at home.

I think if someone at home is in the vulnerable category or in contact with someone vulnerable (like checking in and doing a few bits for an older relative/working with that group) I'd be taking the cautious approach and keeping the child at home until the school is all clear. We are all responsible not just for ourselves but those we come into contact with.

With universities and colleges on line, virtual teaching, why are students still travelling to digs, for parties  those students should be punished

Think a lot of students are doing 1/3 weeks on campus

Because a lot of the colleges have spread out the week with odd half days and hours on campus that seems to ensure that students just can't stay home!Any colleges that have their own accommodation don't want to see it empty either so I'm sure that has an effect on their timetabling! I think there is definitely an element of looking after accommodation/landlords there too.

Certain courses cannot be done fully online as well. My niece starts tomorrow on a course that is very hands on and she has hours in college Mon/Wed/Thur/Fri, not a full day any day, half day Friday but it means she has to go to city and stay there for the week.

Too risky now to be sending kids to schools with confirmed cases, school buses are the perfect environment to spread this.

We have experts explaining things to us and politicians deciding otherwise.

Agreed, we have come to that decision, no school this week.

How long for SB? Will you keep them off for the 2 weeks or just this week or until school advises all clear, which I imagine they won't. Just wondering as your situation raises very good questions in my mind re my own kids if a similar situation arose. I think you are doing the right thing.

I emailed the school and advised them of my decision, and they were extremely supportive, I said I would re-evaluate at the end of the week. I think they understood I am a grand parent with a wife undergoing cancer treatment so definitely a high risk household.

I think the government is not following scientific advice, because they cant afford to. The country is a business, it needs income and they are making decisions with this in mind. If you are in a position to keep you children at home, educate them, then its a no brainer, I cant think of a negative (other than its a pain in the arse).

I think if anyone is asked for a short reply to the question "What does a parent do", the most logical reply is "Keep their children safe", thats what I am doing by keeping the lad home, its parental instinct.

My guess is given the swift and well structured reply from school a significant proportion of parents are doing them same.

Certainly looks that way. Thanks for that, makes perfect sense.

Rather useless case release today - Kerry is bundled in with 20 counties on 216 cases!

Saw another chart that I can't find now again that showed a +10 for 5/10 or was that from a previous day?

This is a wreckless way to be treating people who should be made aware of just bad the problem is in their particular county.

All along we were given specific numbers, then when we know they are on the increase we are suddenly kept in the dark, why?

There could be 197 new cases or 1 new case (or anywhere in between those two numbers) in Kerry or any of the 20 counties.
