Rushes....any use

We have a large area of rushes nearby. My husband is going to top them Have they any use at all I.e compost pile? Can't find anything when I google

Be very careful bringing them into your garden.
The seeds are very hardy and they are very plentiful. Each plant produces something like 10,000 seeds which remain viable for about 100 years.
