Thanks Mods and thanks to my team! Well done to the podium

Yaaay! That's really made my morning. Ecto, Barney, Munster -what a team effort! I think the main thing I've taken from this is that I definitely need to eat more chocolate so I can better contribute to chocolate-focused quiz rounds.

Thanks, Kolido and Baggly, for running this! It's been a great distraction :)

Thanks for running it Baggly and Kolido, was a fun week.

Congrats to the winners, well fought at the end.

Well done to my fellow teammates. 2nd place by such a close margin is a fantastic finish.

Going by the historical definition, nations including Finland, Sweden, Ireland and Switzerland were Third World countries. Based on the definition that is used today, these would not be considered Third World countries.

Thanks sKeith. Im happy with the definition we went with.

This historical definition? Not the one everybody uses?

    That fubar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

It's the origin of the word. Third world isn't even used in reference to developing countries. They are called developing these days. So yeah I'm happy.

What has the origin of words got to do with a forum games quiz and a question about third world countries?

The historical definition of the word 'happy' is derived from the sick joy one gets from seeing the suffering of others.

Because that's the definition that the quiz runners are using to determine the answer.

Its largely a moot point as either everyone got it right by your definition or everyone got it wrong by ours. So it doesn't change standings at all.

I don't get your faux outrage sKeith, but if you can't take the quiz in the spirit of fun it was being run, I cant help you. If you have issues with the running of the quiz and want to do more than make sly remarks you are free to talk to one of the other forum mods, as I had previously advised Hello 2D as well.

I'm not impartial given I'm running the quiz, but I don't feel you little snide comments are warranted and they look absolutely terrible at the end of the quiz, but that's just my take.

In general the quiz was good fun and the majority of people were very courteous and in good spirits, so thank you to those players for that. I wouldn't run this type of quiz again because people just seem to get upset and vent at game runners. It's really discouraging and I am of the opinion it's really bad for getting more people involved. Again, just my take on things.

There is no outrage here, and I would appreciate you not implying that my post includes outrage, if includes 0% anger or any emotions at all, so please don't ascribe your emotions onto my posts, as it then colours my posts in the light you have decided to see my posts in for others.

I was commenting that i found if mad that the quiz runners, whomever they are, would decide to use a historical definition but not say so in the question. It appears to be a deliberate attempt at subterfuge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

That being said thanks again for taking part everyone. It was for the most part good fun.

It's funny that people arguing about questions weren't interested in even discussing their same questions with their team..........

Your choice of words and phrasing is transparent sKeith. People don't say fubar if they are having a laugh with things. People don't slyly ascribe game runners enjoying the suffering of others by accident.

The point is you weren't commenting. You were making sly insinuations.

If you feel there has been subterfuge then report it to the other forum mods. Same as for every single game we play in this forum. That's the procedure. What you have done just looks like sniping.

This is me as a game runner and poster speaking. As I've said I'm not impartial here so it's not forum mod talking.

I've been as transparent and open as I could be in this quiz. Where mistakes have been made they were corrected and apologised for. To be accused of dishonesty and subterfuge like this is a disgrace to be honest.

I mentioned how i found it a very odd question to have been included in this quiz, as so far most of the questions were very difficult, I don't think i knew any in the last two rounds, except the naming of a third world country. I mentioned that maybe the quiz runners let this sheep style question slip through.

I read somewhere that when you're developing a quiz you should make triple sure that your questions have a definitive answer. And look, at the end of the day there's always someone gonna be unhappy with an answer (for example: my family have started a row about the definitive flavours in neopolitan ice cream following a disputed quiz question this weekend). FWIW I also disagree with Baggly and Kolido's definition of the third world but it's their quiz so that's the bottom line. They gave their time and a lot of effort in creating and running this quiz to keep us all amused so I give them all due credit for doing that. I just don't think we should all fall out about a question.

Oh god, that's another option.
Mr Molly says it's chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. The rest of my family say it's banana, vanilla and strawberry. There's been photos of ice cream flying around the group chat since yesterday. There was uproar over it.

Although give me crisps over chocolate any day! I hate chocolate even more after that round!

I think it is any ice cream with 3 flavours - the flavours aren't strictly defined :D But the one I know best would be chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. And it is horrible :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

I think it's choc vanilla and strawberry too.

But it sounds like Cee Jay is right and it can be any 3.

Just out of interest how did they arrive at those four countries and not every other nation who isn't a member of NATO or the old Communist Bloc? Surely there are more?

Not disputing the answer at all as I remember this being on QI and agree that what we commonly refer to as Third World are now known as devloping nations.

Just curious as to why just those four if you or anyone knows?

If I remember correctly it's western/developed countries not aligned to either side.

Just to say not disputing it either, as quizmasters have final say and it makes no difference anyway to the result :D

And it is a quite interesting fact :p, as I didn't know this before.

From googling, the QI question was what was the closest third world country to the UK, and someone said Ireland as a joke and they were right.

But I don't think it's limited to just those countries, as the map and Etymology section, shows

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_World

Nope. Just curious why the three top teams haven't appeared on the Eggheads yet. With scores like that, they'd give Kevin, Pat and co. a real run for their money.

True, you'd be no good on Eggheads, Necro.:)

Some others would clearly be brilliant judging by the scores. Well done to them.

Pretty much every game played in FG is honour based. You can't really legislate for cheating, you just have to trust that other players don't. Any win by cheating is no win at all, so why bother?

Well thanks for that. This is the third time I've played a FG quiz and the first time I've won it which I was delighted with but cheers for spoiling it. Not enough to have one dig you have to take another eh? You didn't win so others must have cheated...faultless logic there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,622 ✭✭✭lassykk

I can honestly say we didn't cheat either and finished second. The level of debate around some of the questions wouldn't have happened if we just relied on good old google.

We were lucky that we had someone on our team (Also Starring LeVar burton) who had unbelievable knowledge of the logos as I think that tripped up a lot of people in this quiz.

Anyway, congrats to the winners and thanks again to Baggly and Kolido for running this. A bit of a thankless job and open to less than positive feedback compared to the sheep/peehs/heeps games!

Spoiling it? If it makes you feel better: congratulations and celebrations.

In this situation, as far as I'm concerned, the logical probability is that people are cheating. I don't believe for a second that those scores were obtained 100 percent legitimately and I'm not afraid to express my view. I don't care that we came last. I wasn't much help to my team and I wasn't that interested in winning, because I knew from looking at the scores that chicanery was afoot.
    lassykk wrote: »

How can you honestly say 'we'? You don't know what your teammates are up to.
    quickbeam wrote: »

    Indeed. Why do we bother?

How long are we going to continue the charade here on Forum Games? Can anyone here honestly say they haven't cheated at least once just a little on this forum? And whether one cheats a tad or goes whole hog on it is irrelevant; cheating is cheating and renders the exercise largely redundant.

It's called forum games. But the desire to impress teammates in quizzes and/or overcome opponents in other games such as peehs, picture peehs etc., where research is not permitted, and the eagerness to evade the embarrassment of the 'wooden spoon' is clearly proving too much of a temptation, and makes a mockery of the purpose of the forum.

There are clever members certainly, but the level of accurate answers on a myriad of subjects defies belief. You'd have to be naive to think there isn't something amiss. It's farcical. There simply aren't enough incorrect answers. It's an insult to the players who are at least trying to play honestly and the hosts of the various games. And it's cyclical and contagious. Why waste time trying to play with integrity when you know at least one opponent is just going to google?

I was going to make a thread about this issue and see if I could convince people to agree to suspend the rampant deceit but it appears it would be wishful thinking falling on deaf ears and utterly futile. I may as well say it here. I don't expect any support. You can all live in la la land if you wish.

I'm not outraged or peeved; it's not important to me, but the point has to be made, the elephant in the room may as well be addressed.

I'm pretty much done playing games where there are strict rules because those rules will invariably be broken. Table quizzes are a matter of honour and I don't see any honour here. I will stick to the sheep/heeps games and forget the majority of the rest. I hope I won't be missed. :p

Again, thanks to my team mates. Thanks to Kolido and Baggly for running the quiz-but why bother? I wouldn't.
