Probably like most on here I wouldn't consider myself a fan of Jose for a number of reasons. But in fairness to him he has us in a pretty good position at this point, still fighting on 4 fronts. Our defence and our general defending, aided by his signings, has improved a lot since he came. That's not to say our defending is great but it has improved. My main issue is that until very recently he hasn't played to our attacking strengths and sitting back on 1/2 goal leads is asking for trouble with our defence. So I've no doubt we're capable of beating all the top teams on our day but Jose has to be less cautious when we go ahead in matches.
I thought last night was the first time we saw a glimpse of what Bale has to offer, he went by defenders as if they weren't there last night. Winks actually looked forward rather than sideways last night which was a welcome change. Was that a one off or can he change his game to be more adventurous?
So a massive game on Thursday night, looks like he'll pick Dier and Rodon at the back. I think Toby's lack of games isn't helping him, he looked rusty last night. I thought Liverpool played much better on Sunday than recent games but they are vulnerable and we need to attack their weakest part, their defence. If we sit back and let them dominate we will end up chasing the game.
So Jose pretty please send them out to win and attack and not sit back. It's not too late to win us over.

We'll be 5 points clear of them when we beat Liverpool and win our game at hand.

City on the other hand...they are looking very good.

A terrible team is going to win the league this year. Terrible relative to previous winners I mean, not terrible compared to challengers.

Liverpool aren't a patch on their last 2 seasons. City are way off their title winning teams of the last 7-8 years.
United might be top, and even if they stay there they are far from world beaters. Even the Leicester team if by some miracle they managed to win it again they are not in the same league as their team from 3 (or 4) years ago.

City had a poor start but if they play the way they have been recently for the rest of the season then they will be well remembered. They've been pure class for a couple of months now.

I heard a theory (possibly in the athletic or possibly someone on the guardian football weekly podcast) months back during citys slow start that guardiola had thought about covid, empty stadia, packed fixture lists and all that and was rotating and setting his tactics to less intensity at the start of the season because he had somehow come up with an idea that a mid/late burst would be key

Now thats easy to have speculated back then, and city had a great squad that were always going to click at some stage, and of course if VVD doesnt get taken out by pickford I think LFC would be right up there, but it looks a clever bit of analysis right now.

I dont think we have the first xi to consistently mix tactics and beat the variance of styles and approaches we meet.

Thats my big criticism of mourinho, the one-note tactic that has seen us drop at least ten league points this season so far.

Fifteen million a season and he has us, imo, where any manager in the division would.

A trophy would be great but a league cup doesn't bring the club forward (i agree with poch there) and mourinho was surely brought in, on that money, with that profile, to seriously drag these players to another level.

We havent seen that imo. Won some games poch wouldnt have, lost and drawn some games poch wouldnt have. No great jump (obviously we were in freefall under poch at the end and i believed he had to go, but getting us back to top six is not imo anything more than bare minimum).

We're not a league winning outfit but to repeat the main charge- to go out there and draw against teams everyone else beats and worse still everyone knowing what will happen and how it will happen is tactically unacceptable.

Not cycling players to keep them fit and happy when its wise to do so

Blaming individuals but still picking them, without addressing the issues

Not a ninety minute performance in months against anyone not pure dross.

I just think we've gone backwards rapidly, and if anything we've been lucky in son and kane converting an amazingly high % of chances- beyond that its the same thing as sunk poch- fellas in that first xi week in week out that do not do the basics of their job and still getting the game next week with no improvement.

Hopefully I am back now but being unbiased (as all know not easy) I have to disagree with most of your post.

You are correct in that there are games that we have dropped points at the end. But to say that we have not had a 90 minute performance in months isn't true. We have beaten Leicester 2 nil in late December and they are the form team. We have progressed in 3 cups and are only a few points from the summit of the PL.

As for the playing players that have been slated, our best players (apart from HK and Son) are winks and ndombele. If we had dropped them then we would have been a disaster.

He is also blooding other people like rodon and Viniscius. I think that the Liverpool match is a watershed moment and will certainly be a make or break for us. For what it's worth I think we will blitz them as they are not a good side. Definitely 3 or more goals in the difference.

Bale is close to ready and is going to be a goal machine. As for tactics we are seeing different formations recently and we are better for it.

It is hard to believe that people are saying that we are going backwards rapidly when we are on the cusp of the best season in our lifetime. Well I'm 42 and been a supporter since 87.

    Good to be back boys.

    No?

Supposedly that a top team was using ped's and the covid testing showed them up ??

    Did it reference spurs?

Probably said something about the army being deployed to ensure that the public abide by a curfew as told by a friend of a friend who is high up in Mi6.

Peds would not show up in a Covid test but they are constantly being tested for them separately. I have heard that a certain team have e been prescribed viagra as they cannot achieve anything further than a semi.

Welcome back Joe. It’s good to see your unrelenting positivity after some of the over the top negativity by other posters.

But I just wanted to clarify something in your post (#5833) above. My recollection is that we lost to Leicester 2-0 rather than beating them by that scoreline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,706 ✭✭✭✭greenspurs

    Peds -
    No reference to Spurs.
Ahh its only rubbish, just thought it was funny that PEDs would show up in a covid test ! :D:D:D

Joe, its good to see you back and i hope you're right

Truth be told my actual sentiment on the team is that we're exactly where we should be, but in a season where we *could* be a lot better off.

We still have a few world class players and decent first teamers with one or two very shakey positions.

I'm disappointed that Mourinho is not addressing the obvious. Same as any manager we ever had I guess!

    Re: PEDS

    I haven't seen a text or whatsapp.

But there is one team who have fallen apart this season after a couple of years of very, very high performance and I had seen very careful speculation that going cold-turkey on PED type substances after the introduction of mandatory ongoing testing would be *an* explanation

Lads its all nonsense written be a writer who writes nonsense
Caffeine doping and using inhalers its all complete hog wash ,

Players leave clubs every season on bad terms and youth players are in an around the first team squad, Players go out to there international camps, Head doctors and staff change nearly every season ,

There are so many protentional ways to get caught its just not worth even trying ,

Also the team accused has had many devote Muslims over that period who don't drink and don't break there fast during Ramadan even for the Champion's league final, Someone how I doubt they would take PEDS no problem

Major fall off has happened to Juventus & PSG also this season its a mental time for football, and lets not forget the major injury crisis has not helped ,

Yeah it will be interesting to see does Winks get the nod tomorrow night. One decent game all season, such a conservative player, the team loses all momentum when he's playing. Risk averse and not physically strong enough, he pulled out of one tackle in the first half on Monday which nearly caused up problems. If he's turned a corner fine but I'm not sure a physical Liverpool team with Henderson back is the place to find out. I hope he's not picked but looks like he might be.

Why do people think hes going to play Winks ??

Bar injuries of course, but youd imagine the midfield will be Hojbjerg +Tanguy + Sissoko + Moura/Bergijn ??

Between him and Sissoko possibly. As Sissoko didn't start against Sheffield its hard to know what Jose is thinking, so we'll have to wait and see. Hope Bergwin starts, he's been excellent recently, all that's missing is a goal and what better time to make up for his misses at Anfield than tomorrow night.

Sissoko had a great run of form around the united win but his performance on the ball recently is very poor which is killing us

He also had a shocker against leicester defensively and i think winks has been closer to the first team picture since

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,706 ✭✭✭✭greenspurs

    Quote from Lampard yesterday....

“Yes I’m gutted to have been sacked, so are my friends and family. When I got home, John Terry was already there comforting my wife Christine on the couch. Not sure how they heard but they were both red faced and breathless with emotion.”

Sissoko for me, offers more than winks and that’s not saying a lot

If Bergwijn could get goal to give his confidence a boost, nice all round player

Hope Bale gets some mins too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,795 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

Yep can’t be having winks near the team.
I’m no fan of sissoko but at least he has the physical power to get around the pitch and hold onto the ball as opposed to winks who is only a small improvement on Tom carroll in my opinion.

Reguilon out for 3 weeks according to reports.

And Davies is a doubt for tomorrow too.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Reggie is a big loss, and if Davies is out as well we are very vulnerable. 3 at the back, or someone is playing out of position at left back. Not something you want against Liverpool's attack.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,442 ✭✭✭Charliebull

One of the boys just showed me a clip from spurs tv, the squad claims the stadium, brilliant laugh, tanaga and Bergwijn are petrified

Tanganga played there once last season I think, and Doherty has played LB for Ireland. He wasn't great there though, and I'm not sure that he's fit either.

    Bale

    Great results tonight lads.
    United loss
    Chelsea draw
    Leicester/Everton draw.
West Ham won but they won’t be anywhere near at the business end.
A win tomorrow and we are back in this!! (Well the top 4 hunt anyway).

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Yeah, worked out very well, but only if we take the chance and win tonight. A draw wouldn't be the worst, but win this and our game at hand and we go joint 3rd. 1 point off United and 5 off City (who will likely win their game at hand).

It'll be very tough tonight. Liverpool are coming off a bad run, and a win for them is a must if they want to keep pace with City/Leicester/United.

Well, no better place for Liverpool to end their 4-game no scoring PL streak than at Spurs.

Guaranteed that tonight will be the biggest loss Liverpool will have suffered in the last 20 years. Spurs will run riot. Get ready for a goal fest.

    Or at least 2 nil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,948 ✭✭✭2nd Row Donkey

Any time spurs have an opportunity to put themselves into a good position or the fans get their hopes up it ends in disappointment. Redknapp, AVB, Poch, Mourinho. It goes way back before that of course but we knew better then to get our hopes up back then.

Best we can hope for is nil-nil until 80+ mins and we score late enough to hold on to a win.

If we try to defend any sort of a 1 goal or 2 goal lead for any length of time we are goosed.

A rising tide lifts all boats....

Hopefully Ndombele recent form can inspire both Son and Kane who have been really off the boil in recent weeks.

Fabhino looks to be injured for Liverpool going by Twitter
Cant see you lot not scoring twice at least I that true

I almost hope they score in first five mins. I can’t hack another 90 of us sitting and waiting for the inevitable opposition goal late on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,103 ✭✭✭joeguevara

Come on lads, get ready for one of the best nights I'd Spurs modern history. After we win tonight, we will be seen as the most legitimate title challengers. We will have murdered any chance of Liverpool being double champs and started their spiral into midtable oblivion.

Forget about any chance of us losing tonight. We are formidable and superior to them in every aspect. Klopp will have another breakdown on the sideline. Not the laugh at anything jovial character he was last year.

We are Tottenham Super Tottenham we are Tottenham from the lane.

Joe, your practically begging Liverpool fans to come in here and rub our noses in it at full time.

Lloris (C), Aurier, Rodon, Dier, Davies, Doherty, Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Bergwijn, Son, Kane.

Not sure what the formation will be? Could be 3-4-3 with Doherty LWB? Big chance for Rodon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,795 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

I am gonna counter Joe’s positivity and say we are getting walloped tonight. (Whenever I get hope spurs spank me).
Pool early goal and we fall apart from there. (Jesus I hope I’m wrong)
