    It may be due to travellers lifestyle. They pass through every town and village at some stage. Most Irish people would have direct experience with them from time to time. Other deprived people don’t move around as much.

    Traveller culture is dying though.
    Traveller culture is basically hinged on the idea that the females are totally subjugated by the males. As a female traveller you are more or less the property of your father, policed by your brothers and extended male family until you become the property of your husband and become a baby producing servant of him, with no rights no voice no control over your own life.
    Increasingly young traveller girls are resisting this and still want the husband and the Disney wedding Day but then refuse to be treated as a slave.
    Watch and see what happens in the next 20 years.

    A number of traveller girls in Thurles are dating/marrying Muslims and Africans and some are converting to Islam with disapproval from their families of course. Interesting times ahead.

    It won't change. I live near a primary school and on any given day, you will find teenage Traveller girls waiting to pick up their brothers and sisters when they should be in school themselves. Education first to higher levels or nothing changes. They have to mix with others and not remain among the very tight knit group. These are not poor travellers either. The very large extended family are pharmaceutical specialists of sorts. Huge homes, plenty of money, land purchased all over town with lots of rental property. Contrast that with the genuinely poor travellers out in the halting site that make sure the kids get to school. I have passed the dad (only one family out there now) on many occasions bringing them all home walking along a dangerous road.

    Exactly the same in the UK. Statistics showing that crime is higher near Traveller sites & Police are scared to act for fear of racism accusations. Also the Police said that budget cuts meant it was harder to get together the numbers needed to visit Traveller Sites.

    One Traveller "Boss" (Paddy Doherty of Gypsy Weddings fame) said that it's a few families on each site & that the majority don't support them. His site is crime free but it does beg the question as to why the other "bosses" don't impose their power & throw out the criminal element.

    He has 4-5 kids. I would be driving the other direction coming home. I've met him and only had a few words with him in the local gym a couple of times. Very nice bloke and his dad before he died would have been seen in the same light. I couldn't say the same about the other main traveller family in town.

    I know these traveller girls. Dating Bangladeshi and Pakistani men who work in the takeaways and convenience stores. A neighbour of mine is a traveller and is dating an African man. As I said very interesting times ahead regarding Travellers acceptance of other cultures and faiths. Will the PC brigade defend the travellers if they start disowning their children, siblings etc

    I’m seeing evidence of it. The girls still want a husband and a big wedding but are now much more combative then they used to be within the relationship about things like family size, not wanting to live in a mobile home not wanting to live with his family etc
    I help the girls to get as much of the SW payments they are entitled to paid to them rather then the husband. This reduces the amount of money wasted on horses and dogs and fags and gambling and ensures that as much of it as possible goes on food and heating and other necessities.
    This is empowering the women and they’re not afraid any more like their mothers were,

    This is true but these would be girls who had already been rejected from their families anyway and would find themselves with an extremely limited choice of romantic partner as a result of that.

    I’m in Thurles too and I can back that up. An increasing amount of traveller girls have been disowned by family for it wanting to toe the line as regard the culture. Not just in Thurles but all over. They’ve broken away and are making a life for themselves. They seem to be hitting it off great with the Asian immigrants and what harm? Both are ethnic minorities who wouldn’t maybe have a huge choice in romantic partner if looking in the settled Irish community.
    Love is love.

    Caught sight of an african lad riding a sulky at breakneck speed down the belgard road once

    The Gardai are now saying this:

    A garda spokeswoman said: "During the incident a male in his 40s was injured and was taken to University Hospital Galway with non-life threatening injuries.

    "Gardaí have identified all parties involved and are following a definite line of enquiry.

    "No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."

    Correct, they were already shunned by their familys.... Some of them very nice girls, but they are not the problem as you say, i know from experience... People from the area just don't want the hassle... Not easy either way.

    If they were already shunned then they were no longer practically travellers, they were outside traveller culture. Not sure it can be considered a good story or seen as progress.
