Claw hammer usually works, you might need to waggle it from several directions using the wall itself for leverage. If the head is too far away, use a bit of timber against the wall.

Here's another pic, slightly better quality.

It's like a hollow nail, that is open along one side.

Does anyone know what it is called?

    Its an express nail.
Its just held there by the spring tension on the nail itself.
They can be near impossible to remove if they have enough grip on wall.
Just cut it off with grinder or hacksaw and tap remainder below surface of wall and fill hole.

Hit it with a hammer it'll break off

knowing express anchors, i would be wary of following the advice immediately above. they're not designed to be removed easily, and the advice about the nail bar, while it can't hurt* to try, i suspect the head would just fold flat if you tried.

*this could go wrong and hurt.

Bang it back and forth with a hammer and it'll break off.

Failing all of that, knock it all the way in.

*have you switched it off and back on again?*

In the end, I did this and it worked.

I tried what people had suggested, but in the end, brute force was required. I hit it several times with a hammer: up, down, left, right. Over and over. It snapped eventually. Now, I just have to fill the hole and paint over it.

Lesson: don't use an express nail unless you will never, never, never want to remove it.

    Stay safe, everyone.
