Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yes. They worked. Now we can start easing them. Or maybe we stay like this for ever?
One of the ideas of lifting the restrictions is that they know this will increase the Ro from where it is now. However, they can try to measure this effect without allowing the virus to run rampant. That will guide fthem for the next phases.
The second hope is that we can compensate for any rise in the Ro by using some new tools that we did not have the last time. The only new tool we really have is (hopefully) a slicker testing and tracing regime.
If they can do this much better they can catch a higher percentage of those infected earlier than before.
The longer we stay in lockdown the longer the Ro is less than 1 and the lower is the number of people infected and spreading the virus. This means that when we do lift a restriction every person we catch will represent a bigger percentage of the total and the reducing effect on Ro will be more effective and we stand a better chance of it compensating for the increase that the lifting of the restrictions will create.

Great. Except you're wrong again Jim. But glad you admit you have no credibility.

So you are saying that with an R0 of, for instance, 0.5 we would not see the number of cases begin to grow again should people ignore social distancing, etc?

    Enlighten us please.

And, for the record, I'm not seeking any credibility with anonymous posters online. It is you who seems to equate credibility with the length of time here; which seems not only bizarre but at variance with the evidence on many threads.

I wouldn't let it get to me, if I were you.

Feels to me they never actually had a fight to begin with. I expect they'll open, and then actually end up like the rest of us.

Agreed. It also helps when you’re one of the most isolated countries in the world.

People comparing the 2 are ridiculous, they don’t share a border, closest flight is from Aus which is ~4 hours flying so you’re not getting people coming/going for weekenders and a quick ski getaway..

Doubtful. The virus is pratically gone there. They have strict measures on people coming in. They may have isolated cases in people coming into the country but these will be isolated for two weeks so they will be very little community spread. New Zealand done what Ireland etc should have done once things started to get serious in Italy. New Zealand put its citizens first. They have being doing that for a while with the measures they put in place for foregin property buyers etc. Ireland has always cared to much about how the outside world sees us. We don't have the self esteem as a nation to do what's right for us.

This argument again, and the usual negative stuff towards us as a nation.

For a start, there was no way for us to do this while NI was part of a country looking for herd immunity, before backtracking. And for the people who suggested that "all we had to do was get NI to agree to close the border with the UK", sweet jebus get a grip.

But now they have to maintain mandatory 14 day quarantine until there is a vaccine. Or they will be back to square one. We couldn’t do that....in case you hadn’t noticed we’re a little more integrated with our neighbouring countries, even leaving aside the land border

How do you think they’d police putting people into quarantine around the border? :L NZ can do these measures as they have limited flights as the way in, it’d be a different case if they actually lived within a 2 hour flight of the epicentre in Europe

New Zealand a mile up the road from Antarctica boasting about beating Covid 19 first. WTF . They never had a problem in the first place. Had 6 cases and shut down whole place and allowed no one into country from early March. They took the '' prevention is better than cure'' attitude, and they stamped it out, but it was just a spark.
Once they open up they actually might get infected, as they never did.

Not making any point, just PMSL at the description of NZ’s location :D:D:D

Ireland will be OK. We have a large rural population and not very densly populated city's. Sweden hasn't done to bad with limited restrictions and that is a very urbanised country.

I saw this picture on Facebook and I had to take a screenshot of it and share it here. It's a picture that sums up the importance of nutrition. Hopefully when this crisis is all over, whatever government we end up getting, can taxes sugary and high carb sh1te to encourage healthier eating.

You have the thing about distances all mixed up as that only relates to exercise.

Not sure why I'm quoted as the post your replying to? I didn't write the post you quoted me.

All of this talk about New Zealand is missing the point that their economy is going to take just as much a hammering as everywhere else. The only benefit in reducing new case numbers to zero is that they may be able to ease lockdown measures quicker than other countries but that's about it.

The Czechs made masks mandatory. And look at their case numbers. Ridiculous that we haven't.

Where do you live? No change anywhere near me. Everyone still following the guidelines. I think this weekend has shown that people are still on board in a serious way.

I assumed the 2 week quarantine would be around for a while tbh even if only travelling from Europe. Non-essential travel is to be avoided anyways for forseable future so probably fairly by the by until it's allowed again.

    CFR = Case fatality rate
    NR = Not reported

Source: Department of Health, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre and the HSE.

    NOTES: -
*¹ Daily increase numbers on these dates represent both new cases and older cases reported from Germany which results in skewed daily % increases and average case reporting % changes, numbers are broken down as:-
    Day|Date|New Irish Cases|German Cases
    42|10/04/20|480|1035
    43|11/04/20|553|286
    44|12/04/20|430|297
    45|13/04/20| 527|465
    46|14/04/20|548|284
    47|15/04/20|657|411
    48|16/04/20|629|95
    49|17/04/20|597|112
    50|18/04/20|630|148
    51|19/04/20|445|48

    *² Denotification of deaths:-
    10/04/20 – 1
    16/04/20 – 1
    21/04/20 – 1
    22/04/20 – 10
    23/04/20 – 3
    24/04/20 – 2
    25/04/20 – 3
    26/04/20 – 2
27/04/20 – 3 (also ICU number reduced by an unspecified amount)
    28/04/20 – 2
    30/04/20 – 1
    1/05/20 – 1
    2/05/20 – 4
3/05/20 – 2 (also ICU number reduced by an unspecified amount)

*³ Recovered rates are not reported officially by the DoH or HPSC in the above links, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data supplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting.

Recovered statistics are only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed. Updated on 15/04/20 - The WHO reporting criteria has been changed recently to eliminate the 2 test requirement before reporting as recovered, now an outcome report is sent within one month of initial notification or when an outcome is known, the available health outcomes are either “recovered/healthy”, “not recovered", “death", “unknown" or “other", weather this helps create more accurate recovery numbers or skews them further is yet to be seen.

*⁴ Due to the above issue with reporting of recovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

*⁵ From 24/04/20 probable deaths are included in the official death figures, this is to comply with the WHO definition of COVID-19 deaths issued on the 16th and adopted in Europe by the ECDC yesterday, this is in compliance with what is known as the International Statistical Classification of Diseases known as the ICD-10, as a result a new column has been added into the charts to separate confirmed and suspected COVID-19 deaths – see this post for an explanation on this change. As a result of this change in reporting the CFR is skewed as a corresponding number of cumulative case numbers is not currently part of the official records.

Maybe or maybe not. Not many of our cases came from NI to begin with. We could have closed down international travel earlier. Shut our airports. There are many countries in Europe that haven't suffered to badly. Croatia has a similar population as Ireland. Only 80 or so deaths.

The Czechs made masks mandatory. And look at their case numbers. Ridiculous that we haven't.

Baffling. I ordered a rake of masks a few weeks ago on Amazon they are a must have for us. My friend lives in Germany and they are handing them out at no cost to people at the entrance to shops and public transport hubs etc..

French doctors are reporting a possible infection in Paris in late December.

This puts Covid-19 in circulation @1 month before France's 1st reported case on the 24th January.

I'm delighted to learn today that a Kerryman found the cure for this horrible disease. Its a trip and a drink from St Fionans well, in Kerry.

    LOL.

What I am saying is that no one has a clue whether we are ready to start phase 1 now or in 2 weeks time. I know we will be in a better position in 2 weeks time. But I also know that it will have negative economic effects.

They are erring on the side of caution and I am all for that.

Politics over initial supply issues over science and common bloody sense, now they won't back down without looking like eejits. Though others have like Germany, Austria, the UK is mentioning them, the US CDC and Surgeon General did a complete about face. Here? I'd not hold my breath. It'll be the all too common response of our authorities, slow to react, wait for others to do it first and apply too many of the weapons available in a half arsed fashion. Lockdown, they got at about the right time. The whole Cheltenham thing was still in the early days so we get a pass on that score. They nailed schools closing. However in protecting the care homes, testing, contact tracing, border control, quarantine, giving the Guards resources and powers to enforce the lockdown they've either screwed up, got it half right, or only got their act together in the last week or fortnight. Apparently.

Though no journalist is asking WTF, ever. Many of the rest of us are only too glad to pronounce sure aren't we doing pretty well, because mediocrity is apparently a bullseye and some get uppity when you dare to question the authority's handling of this.

What has kept our numbers low is because most folks went along with the lockdown and social distancing and our low population density compared to our European neighbours.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Are there any Irish dogs being trained to sniff out covid19? It might be useful to have a dog working for nursing homes. To sniff staff with covid19 who might be asymptomatic.

Once they got these powers they used them quite sparingly. Anything else would have been overkill. The guards have to maintain a reputation and credibility after the spoofers with their blown predictions and comparisons to the 50 million dead in the Spanish Flu have moved on to climatology or some other topic. There was never much serious disobedience anyway, just the odd party or whatever. In Sicily, party-goers aimed fireworks at a police helicopter. In Paris, crowds rioted and fought the police.

Begs to question if it took France the bones of 4 months to do retrospective analyses, have Ireland done exhaustive retrospective ones?

I think it was January 17th France had their first lab confirmed case. We knew SARS-CoV-2 presented with (in severe illness) with a certain type of CT findings and they were capable of running rRT-PCR analyses on samples since January 8th. Sounds like their surveillance might have dropped the ball a bit?

Vintners association are just making a token effort on behalf of their members. They could come up totally bomb proof plan and it still wouldnt fly, the point is society needs to opened up gradually, the pub is further down the peaking order from everything 3-6 weeks before it. Sorry but it is, most of us are still been told to stay out of the office til the same date ffs.

Sorry but it is, most of us are still been told to stay out of the office til the same date ffs.

First pub to open with any sort of supposed social distancing will be swamped.

Appreciate all the responses from ye guys. Cheers
