Joan Jett - I Love Rock N Roll
    Johnny Cash - Hurt

I never get bored of Joan Jetts I love rock n roll.

As I said already Johnny Cash singing hurt makes me feel all the emotions but mostly the sad ones but in a good way.

I will pass on the first one because I have nominated both.

On the second I will go with No Doubt, because I love the original from Talk Talk more than the original from NIN.

    Mr Cash, fantastic cover

Soft cell, prefer it to Joan Jett

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,577 ✭✭✭Bonzo Delaney

Soft cell - Tainted love. Good old 80s synth, cant beat it.
Johnny Cash - Hurt. The lyrics just suit Johnny's voice

Joan Jett - I Love Rock N Roll [still sounds great]
Johnny Cash - Hurt [I have no doubt that Hurt is the better song :pac:]

    Soft Cell
    Johnny Cash

Love both of these covers. Didn't nominate any songs for this competition but both of these would have been on the list.

Since I haven't voted on the first one, I will give my vote to the amazing Joan Jett to make it again next vote for the win!!

Edit: bubblypop beat me to it so mine became the winning vote hahaha!!

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower Vs Johnny Cash - Hurt

This is another tough one to decide, but I will go for Johnny Cash. He makes it sound very personal and his fragile-sounding voice fits well with the arrangement. The gentle guitar and piano is nice.

Johnny Cash - Hurt ; the better of the two songs here and a worthy finalist

Johnny Cash - Hurt. Not a lover of the song, but he really makes it his own.

Cash. This might be the poor buggers only chance to get to a final with a cover as his music seems criminally under rated by some here.

Also it's just a fantastic cover.

Also voting for Johnny Cash. A fantastic version that suits him so well, a lesson for all younger musicians.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,037 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Johnny Cash for the raw emotion he puts into it

Johnny Cash - Hurt still for the emotion!

Jimi Hendrix just to keep the tie alive a little longer.

All along the watchtower for me, he made a classic even better imo. Also I seem to be in a minority here but I'm just not that interested in Cash's version of Hurt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,577 ✭✭✭Bonzo Delaney

Ah it's like your two favourite teams getting to a semi final.
    Have to go for
Jimi Hendrix the guitar work is otherworldly for its time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭Nunu

    Cash - Hurt.

Listening to that version always stops my world in its tracks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,387 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

Johnny Cash. I would like to see this in the final, it's a great cover.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,943 ✭✭✭✭the purple tin

    The Man in Black.

As Trent Reznor said 'when Johnny Cash covers your song, it's not your song anymore'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,604 ✭✭✭lassykk

Hurt for me. Prefer the original but this is a good cover and as previously stated I don't like hendrix

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭Gru

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower - just to play underdog as i like them both equally...

    Johnny Cash - Hurt
I find his voice is haunting with pain singing it, stays with you long after, totally memorable

    Johnny Cash - Hurt

All along the watchtower is a better song...outright...but Its debateable whether Jimi's version is superior to Dylans original... So as a cover exercise Johnny Cash (and producer Rick Rubin) have recorded a version thats far superior to the NIN original...hence it gets my vote

Well, it's fairly emphatic but one more vote for Johnny Cash, Hurt.
It's better then the original, best thing that can be said about a cover.

Joan Jett - I Love Rock N Roll. The Nirvana song is great and I'd have voted for it ahead of either in the first semi, but have to stick with my nomination.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,212 ✭✭✭Irish Aris

    Joan Jett from me.

The last of my nominations. An excellent song that I never get bored to listen to, even when I don't listen to rock music in general!!

I will stick with Joan Jett. Good 80's rock number.

Two of my own nominations here, so tough enough decision, but I've been backing one as a potential overall winner throughout, so my vote will go to...

Better song by far and would be a deserving winner.

Nirvana- the man who sold the world,
Always felt "I love rock n roll" was a bit cheesy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,404 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

Nirvana for me - last of my nominations standing after Jimi had his ass kicked by Johnny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,226 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Nirvana -The Man Who Sold the World: Great cover version because of Kurt's vocals, his guitar work and the music from the rest of the band. Nice laid-back interpretation. Anyway, I can't stand the other song!

Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World

Just shades it by making it slightly more their own version, then Joan Jett

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,604 ✭✭✭lassykk

Nirvana - Definitely the best track left and the other track is really cheesy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,226 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

I think I can see who the finalists are going to be - certainly at the moment! I will have to give this some thought!

I love both these songs so I wasn't going to vote. But then I decided to listen to both and see which one I'm vibing more with today. And based on that alone which is pretty weak reasoning tbf..

    Joan Jett

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87,987 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

I'm not really a fan of either but Kurt's vocals on that track are good so Nirvana it is
