Oliver Plunkett St. is no longer a pedestrianised street.

    I don't understand the need for a 100kmh dual carriageway between Dunkettle roundabout and Silversprings (where it's funneled into/from a 60/50kmh single-lane road).

    It turns into a car park at rush hour (either way) for that obvious reason.
    It also seems to be an obvious candidate for a shared bus and cycle lane.

    It's a significant barrier to active transport on the East of the city. It's not a nice road to walk or cycle.

    It would cost almost nothing to rectify. Paint and paperwork.

    The Tivoli master plan will likely deliver segregated cycle infrastructure, along with a dunkettle railway station which would serve the East well if it combined shuttle bus services and park and ride.

    No need for cycling on a main arterial where it can be avoided, and joined up thinking between rail and bus could remove the need for a bus lane, though folks will moan about two transport links replacing one.

    Yep. It's a very long way off though, probably decades, and will cost an enormous amount of money.
    You could transform Tivoli over the course of a few days at minute cost with the shared cycle/bus lane.

    City streets are getting busier every day. From next Tuesday, people will be allowed to drive within 5km of their home. From the 18th, I am already making plans again for social distance meetups until private house gatherings are allowed next month, I will hazard a guess I am not alone. The city centre will be the point where nearly everyone's 5km circles intersect.

    And the best we could hope for is for the council to return a busy pedestrian zone to us. And in a heroic attempt to save lightly trafficked roads during the Pandemic, Cllr Des Cahill will try introduce one way footpaths and reduce cycle lanes.... While he cries to the papers about 'lobbyists' who are just local citizens trying to hold our crappy local government to account for their actions.

    Our city has done absolutely nothing to get ready for Monday the 18th yet or next Tuesday when the 5km extension will see more in the city.

    This was only announced yesterday.

    Driving was never under the 2km limit for shopping.

    I was in town this morning for the market at 9.30am but the queue went back to Patrick Street so turned around but there was no street parking available.

    Looks like there will be some rat runs closed. Roads were selected based on footfall not traffic. Wonder how Castle St. escaped.

    Hope this is just the start. Castle Street and Caroline Street two more obvious choices. Would love to see something happen with North Main Street too.

    Paul St should have been done years ago.

    Two issues which come to mind are the Port and the access to the North Ring Road. At Silversprings, the N8 divides one lane to the R635 and one road to town.

    Once the Port is relocated and the NRR motorway opened (whenever that'll be), it would make lots of sense for the Tivoli DC to become an urban road with active transport priority, with access to this new road from the eastern end of the redeveloped port lands and to provide access to Glanmire + long distance buses from the M8 and N25.

    I heard one of the councillors (Terry Shanahan I think) on the News at One speaking about re-pedestrianising Oliver Plunkett St as if it was some triumph of council policy :rolleyes:

    The same Terry Shannon that delayed the pedestrianisation of the Marina a few years ago, and then came back to take all the credit for it in a photo op a few days ago.

    Reading the available bits of the councils recovery pathway document, it appears Des is going to use disabled people access to fight any further giving of space to non cars. Which could be why some obvious rat runs such as Castle Street has remained outside the scope.
    We might see more pedestrianization on one or two streets where actual lobbyists with sway will get permission for their businesses to use the road.

    We will probably be lucky to be getting OPS back. But we won't get it back until there's been an evaluation of car parking in the city centre for essential workers......

    In France, the environment minister Elisabeth Borne has appointed an experienced transport ecologist, Pierre Serne, to develop a plan for tactical urbanism, or urban rearrangement, to prevent an increase in car usage once lockdown restrictions ease.

    In Brussels, there are plans to declare the inner city centre, known as the Pentagon, a pedestrian and cyclist priority zone, with cars, trams and buses limited to 20 kph.

    Berlin has created new cycle routes, in the US, Boston, Minneapolis and Oakland are banning cars from certain streets and in Colombia’’s capital, Bogota, an additional 76km of cycle lanes have been created to help social distancing.


    Meanwhile in our local government

    Councillors have been told that physical distancing requirements have drastically reduced the capacity on the city’’s bus fleet to just 30% of its normal passenger-carrying capacity.

    Cycling isn’t for everyone and City Hall expects more people to use the private car to access the city - at least over the coming months.

    WTF? Is this true? Who are they going to survey? The people who want to park on OPS no doubt and they can then point to the fact that 100% of those surveyed want OPS to be full of cars.

    To me that implies it will be repedestrianised, but the timing is under discussion

    It's crazy. Pedestrianisation and active and sustainable transport are proven to improve footfall and bring vibrancy to urban areas across the world. There's a reason people rave on about how enjoyable visits to European cities are where you can walk around and hop on and off excellent public transport. Yet the geniuses in City Hall and the traders lobby are utterly consumed by the car centered model. In the same year CMATS was published we see City Hall talking about an increase in people using their cars and reduction in active and sustainable travel. How depressing.

    Most likely business owners who want to go back to the good old days of driving in from Rochestown road and parking right outside their place of work.

    I'm being a bit of a prick here, but there is some truth to it.

    It doesn't seem so long ago that owning a retail business, bar or restaurant in the city almost invariably meant you were wealthy and belonged to a minority of people who owned cars in society. That's certainly changed. No wonder the older ones get grumpy!

    Our local government and democracy is actually amazingly bad. People were right to call the council out from the start and people who dismissed us were naive. Only one set of lobbyists are winning here and it isn't the people.
