Delighted for Biden. Don’t know a lot about him but he seems like a decent person and he’s had his share of tragedy. Hope he tries to cross the divide and stays fairly centrist.
I dont see why he should be staying quite a bit in centre. 3rd times the charm for Joe and presidential runs...
    Is Ireland not in lockdown?
And? Training can still take place.... pods of 15

Cos if he goes left he’ll be continually blocked in the republican held senate. He should be pragmatic not dogmatic.

He'll be continually blocked there anyway. McConnell is utterly without principle.

He will be blocked regardless of what he does.

Yeah I know. But he has to hope at midterms that the dens can take the senate (if I understand the system correctly)

He'll be blocked by the senate either way.

And what's wrong with free tuition, free healthcare and a focus on sustainable environmentalism.

I don't call these things 'leftist' - these are ways to spend taxes that are well supported by data and international best practice to be beneficial to society.

I'd be called communist in Trump's America just because I want to make decisions based on what data or existing examples suggest are best.

I don't get this right / left nonsense at all.

    Do we think Biden should

    1) not mention trump
    2) thank him for his service and wish him well

The yanks dont like any hint of socialism. I think he would be foolish to go too left.

Imagine if the Healy-Raes decided what gets voted on in the Dáil. That's a fairly close analogy to how McConnell has led the Senate.

Biden is going in there for 4 years and cleaning up an incredible mess following Covid and the most divided his nation has been in generations.

I'd be shocked if he's going to do anything other than be a very steady, conservative hand at the tiller whilst the Dems try to consolidate and secure power again in 4 years. Nothing will lose them the next election quicker than going in and trying to implement sweeping changes and systemic reform. They'll play right into their opponents hands and give them all the ammunition they'll need.

Exactly. The Republican's slogan for the next election would be "We f*cking told you so" and the moderates and undecided would fall back to their side.

We cannot apply a European mentality to US politics. The reason that Biden won is because people came out to vote. It's highly unlikely Democrat leaning voters will be out again in such force in 4 years. If he tries to go significantly left, the Republicans will turn out in force and clean up.

In my opinion if he’s a safe pair of hands the democrats can win 2024 in a canter.

Left/right in America is not the same as left/right in Europe.

Biden will need some major piece of legislation passed within 15-18 months so that he can keep all their voters interested. If he can't get anything done (and probably won't) then there's a strong chance of a GOP majority in house and senate after 2022 midterms

It seems Mr. Trump was the first President of the USA in nearly 130 years not to own a dog.
That specific fact might mean very little to people who don't own pets but to those that do..........................

The Bidens have 2 German Shepards.

FIRST LAW BIDEN SHOULD PASS IS BANNING WRITING WHOLE SENTENCES IN CAPS.

The Bidens dogs will be the first shelter dogs in the Whitehouse. Adopted. Born in a shelter, moving to the Whitehouse.

Biden won't try and go significantly left, because he personally is not significantly left. He would have no interest in it.

Biden is fairly conservative in almost every regard, save mostly for social issues. And even then he's a very recent convert on those. There wouldn't be a lot of difference politically between him and say David Cameron, for example.

Trump still firing away nonsense on twitter.

Looks like he wants to do this the hard way.

BBC newsnight are reporting that the UK government are aware that breaching the good Friday agreement is a no go for the incoming US administration and think the "matter may be laid to rest tomorrow" in the house of lords...

The wording is a little vague to me but it sounds like a possible row back?

Biden already coming up trumps for Ireland? :D

It's amazing that 'taking back sovereignty' means the 'yet to be inaugurated' leader of another country can dictate foreign policy.

What a bunch of absolute jokers.

Mad scenes in Páirc Uí Chaoimh as Kerry are eliminated by Cork in extra time with a last minute goal. An awful point attempt to force extra time drops into the square and Cork score a goal to win it. Insane.
