I think we can all conclude intelligence wasn't exactly a requisite to survive a lengthy boat trip and build an economy on slavery.

I've been an atheist for well over half my life and whilst I would be aggressively against any conflation of church and state I have no issue with people who wish to practice their faith in relative privacy. That facebook video however isn't depicting people practising their faith, it's a compilation of individuals with a range of mental health issues speaking into a microphone in public and shouldn't be used as a stick to beat all people of faith.

Nah those people are not mentally ill. They are just indoctrinated.

That's a far more eloquent way of putting it.

Yeah, let me clarify. I've no issue with religion, believe whatever you want and practice your faith however you want.

But if you did up a list of all the mad **** that's happened under the guise of religion, it would be grim reading.

I'm a bit conflicted about this to be honest.

I think the people in that video are out of their minds. I believe the reason I'm not amongst their number is because of the incredible work done by the church in this country to educate people.

I know there is a much wider discussion in relation to the churches role in both the education and abuse of Irish children - but I think we're a very well educated country and the catholic church played a major part in the foundation and proliferation of education in Ireland.

Yep. The basic tenets of Christianity are good rules for any civilised society. If we didn't have them we would have to invent them. It's all the mad stuff that hangs on it that only the weak minded can't see through. e.g. The Holy Stone of Clonrichert could be as true as any Christian geegaw.......they just wouldn't be as funny.

Not entirely without purpose or without an ulterior motive in doing so, however.

In the new testament there are two primary commandments to love thy God and love thy neighbour as you love yourself.

I agree with the second part. I don't know if the bible invented socialism but ultimately that's what loving your neighbours is. Wanting the best for everyone - not just yourself. I can buy into that - I just don't need any concept of God to confirm it for me.

FYI, that list was quite exhaustively compiled in 'God is not Great' by Christopher Hitchens, though sadly it only documents religious malfeasance up until it's only edition in 2007.

Ann Doyle doing WWN was something I never expected to see. Her talking about dogging and saying "orgasm spasm" even less so.

That's the great thing about Catholicism. It's so vague and no one really knows what it's about.

More often than not I imagine people find excuses to do terrible stuff rather then the ideology necessarily driving them. I think blaming religion is probably similar to blaming socialism for Stalin.

It is more inherent greed and apathy to consequences (if not outright sociopathy) that is the problem. i.e. ****, power mad people are ****, power mad people either way.

Yes but in the case of Catholicism, those people are and always have been the church itself. This is probably true of nearly all Christian religions. As was said earlier the basic tenants of Catholic Faith are an excellent guide to live life by. The rules, structures and organizations that have been built up around them though are less than desirable.

Religion has always been manipulated by power hungry men and it always will be. It preys on people’s need to believe in a higher power outside themselves to feel safe. It will always exist in some form as we are born with this need. We come into this world aware of a warm benevolent host, that meets our every need. It’s obvious we will then want to seek that out in some form or another.

I knew this chap years ago from England who was a Freemason. If I recall correctly to be a member you had to believe in (any)god, someone needed to recommend / endorse you and they didn't allow women. I remember thinking at the time that those weren't so much requirements as they were filters.

That was brilliant. Loved her usual dead pan face when saying Confirmation and Communion children can now claim the Covid pandemic payment :pac:

Overall an enjoyable evening of TV

Your views while naive are not thought out enough. Religion teaches us that there is an inherent good and evil in all of us and inside and outside the known universe. What your babbling doesn’t consider is how far that good should go? Should it cause you punish another out of love for them or on the other hand to die for them. Christianity teaches us to give up our life out of love for another and humanity not just one segment like a nation. What you got right was the part that you want good for everyone. What you didn’t consider in your ramblings in that tiny mind of yours was what if that desire comes into conflict with your own selfish interests. There is a God and he is greater than all of us combined. We are not pointless atoms wandering around with no purpose. We think we have purpose but often that is just selfish desires. You have them I have them. What religion does is give us that impetus to sacrifice ourselves out of love for another when our instinct is towards self preservation.

And you above all people espousing socialism is if not hypocritical just slightly ironic.

    Will Connors is the anti-christ.

Christianity also teaches you to hate gay people and tattoos and to treat women like ****, not to mention prawns, and that touching pigs is wrong.

So let's be honest, you can f*ck off with that.

And yeah, you can claim that the old testament is not adhered to but it's still part of the bible so you can f*ck off with that too.

Wait, sh*t, this is why we don't allow politics on the Rugby Forum, right? Sh*t, sorry. I'll spoiler it.

Jack McCaffrey walking away from intercounty football at 26.

Alas, I believe the writing is on the wall for this Dublin team which it probably was in fairness the day that Gavin resigned.

Yeah very likely. They won't vanish but seven wins in nine years and five in a row isn't something that can be sustained for ever.

McCaffrey is probably/hopefully an exceptional case in leaving, and the age profile is generally OK otherwise, so they'll be favourites again but they've probably peaked.
