Now that the government has published a roadmap to re-opening, it might be a good time for local authorties too look at ways to help out local businesses.
It looks like social distancing will be with us for the summer and autumn so reduced capacity in restuarants and pubs.
Perhaps the council could close off streets to traffic where pubs and resturants are located and give the street space so that these establishments could set up tables or pods for customers.
Easily achievable in major towns for the summer and autumn months.

Forgetting the weather issue you'd have all types of insurance problems.
It could take 3 months to come to some agreement with them and at that stage the summer is over.

Even if they didn't close streets I would love to see them remove parking from one side of Spencer Street in Castlebar as an example to allow wider areas for pedestrians. Rua always has a que that fills the footpath. Main Street foothpaths are fairly wide but maybe they could look at linenhall street which has a few pubs and restaurants. Removing some parking would help a lot.

Sounds like that could be a good workable idea with parking one side of the street or even extending paths or removing parking outside of public houses and restaurants.

The thing that strikes me for some time is that there hasn't been many signs of a willingness to think outside the box when it comes to improving the social scene in Castlebar, seems like most are happy with the status quo, there could be opportunities in the aftermath of this crisis if owners are brave enough. The phrase "you have to speculate to accumulate" comes to mind.

With all that being said, granted I know insurance policies and costs have been a big problem for pubs clubs etc. Wonder will mooted changes in this area come into affect now after all this.

    Good article here

This is precisely the stuff we have an opportunity to change now.
We have seen serious movement in all sorts of areas which previously took years to happen.
I think it's a good idea and could be made possible with a little bit of new thinking.
