Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ah lads. We were having a rough enough season before lockdown do you really have to stick the knife in even when we aren’t playing.

Before you know it people will start discussing Bebe.

Im a United supporter myself. Wittest fan nickname ever was for the ill fated goalkeeper Massimo Taibi who was from Venice, they called him the blind venetian.

He was merely ahead of his time! A useless midfielder at United before being useless in midfield at United was even a thing.

I can't believe a mile TT thread has degraded to the level of discussing United midfielders. Mods!!!

Would it be considered bad form to consume 4 x 355 ml. beers over the duration of this time trial?

On the contrary I will happily reverse handicap anyone who commits to that. 20s deducted from total time per 355ml beer consumed. Lol

I normally just read and never post but I will give this TT a go.
I have never raced below 5K and a recent 5K gives me a 1ml time of 5:35 on McMillan. I would be shocked to get near that time but I will try.
M41, please add to the table
    Thanks

I think I'm getting route selection anxiety. Is that a thing?

Ran a few random loops off my run this morning only to soon utter "No no no, this won't do at all", shortly after commencing each one. Thoughts of having to mount paths, sharp turns and potential traffic while trying to tip along at mile pace... The hunt continues. All part of the fun. Who'd be a race organiser

What's the difference between elevation gain and Grade percentage on Strava? :o

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,807 ✭✭✭skyblue46

What's the difference between elevation gain and Grade percentage on Strava? :o

Both can vary from watch to watch. Sometimes the elevation gain shown is the total elevation gain other times it is the net gain. For example if you did a 1km run which was pancake flat, then went up 20 metres before dropping down again to a flat run to the end of 10k......some watches show zero elevation gain as the up and down cancel each other out, others will show 20m of elevation gain because you climbed 20m.

Likewise for grade percentage...some will show zero, others will show 2% ie. 20m elevation in a 1,000 metre run.

    What's the context?

I was just looking at the route I picked and saw it said 0.0% grade and 36 ft elevation. But I think that's alright for the TT?

Yeah that's fine. It means the 36 feet of elevation has been cancelled out by 36 feet of drop. Perfect! :)

I also seem to remember the last lad broke the table down into individual age categories for easier reading & to see what the competition was like within that age category. It’s just a suggestion, no problem if it isn’t taken on board.

    Ignored :D

We trust people to know what age category they are in. Doing it any other way would be an insult to their intelligence. :pac:

Speaking of which....if anyone has their name on this table they should also join the Strava club linked in the OP. Likewise if somebody has joined the Strava club they should also drop a note here to be included in the table or post in the club a reference to their username here. At the moment the lists are quite a way off matching each other. :(

I'll sign up to this, give me some extra training motivation.

Haven't raced or ran any time trials in the last 6 months so not sure what level I'm at. I did 10 x 400m yesterday averaging 76.5 with 90 seconds rest, judging by that the sub 5 might be beyond me at this stage but I'll aim for 4:59 anyway, M32.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,707 ✭✭✭CR 7

Haven't done a bit of speedwork since the club suspended training the second week of march so I'm in for this. I did a practice mile last week to remind myself how much it hurts and finished in 5:52, so I might as well be a bit optimistic as to how much improvement you can make with 3 weeks training!

Put me down for 5:30 please, M31.

Would love to sign up. 30 year old male. In terms of predicted times I don't really know what I should be aiming for having never done a 1 Mile run/TT before. 5k recent PB is 26:11. So I reckon stick me down for 07:29 for the Mile and see how I get on.

If someone wants to correct my prediction please let me know, as I say I'm practically guessing.

I'll join the Strava group and comment my username now too.

I'd no real clue either, went with what my 5k pb suggests, but even that's a guess given I haven't raced this year.

I did some 400 reps the other day and it made things a little clearer. Not crystal clear but clearer. I'd recommend that.

    If a 3 x 1 mile session is a good predictor/assessment of target 5k time. What's the equivalent session for a 1 mile tt ??

600m/500m/400m/300m/200m @ goal race pace off 60 secs recovery I have used as a peak workout for the mile in the past. If you can't hit your goal pace off 60 secs rest you need to adjust it. So for a 4.48 mile you would hit 1.48, 1.30, 72, 54, 36.

People also use 10x400m @goal pace off 60 secs as a predicter.

Watch you being ran off boards this time next week after every feels the pain of this session. Nothing quite like that metallic taste of blood in your mouth after you cough up a lung at the end of this session of a Cold January night getting ready for indoors :P

Was going to suggest the 10x400. I've used it myself before but still fell short of my target race pace. With it not being a race it might be even trickier to predict. My experience anyway was the 10 x 400s but maybe add around a second per 400 on the day. So being able to do 75s for a 5 minute flat mile would become 76s and a 5:04 mile. Just my experience.

The 600 down to 200 sounds tougher to me due to the front loading. I'm going to try that one out anyway. Cheers.

Can somebody suggest a couple of sessions to do between now and TT day for somebody who has been doing mainly easy mileage for the last while? Obviously no time for a full-blown mile training plan but just something to get a bit of speed into the legs without going overboard.
