I posted this in the mask thread. It's a very interesting read about aerosols when we breathe and talk... In it, it mentions that there's more aerosols produced when we talk than when we cough. These aerosols are also very small that it lingers in the air for longer and easier to breathe and get into our lungs.

    Explains why it's so contagious.

All this banging on about the leaving cert reminds me of the early days of the crisis, when all the media was interested in knowing was whether they were going to cancel the St. Paddy's day parade - it seemed to be the number one concern, never mind the bigger picture. Even though it was only a matter of time - and everyone knew it - before they eventually cancelled it, the media still wasted up so much air time hand wringing about the "crisis" about the indecision to make a decision, when they should have possibly being doing a better job educating and informing people.

And then they just cancelled the parade etc,etc - just like that. As it was always obvious that they would.

Now, the media is banging on about the leaving cert. It seems pretty obvious to me that the exam won't be going ahead. Obviously plans are being made in real time behind the scenes to figure it - this unprecedented event out - but Matt Cooper is banging on The Tonight Show about how they STILL haven't made a decision. As if it was easy. Fck me, the media are stupid sometimes.

There's a world of difference between the exams, which affects people's lives and career prospects and a piece of fluff of a parade.

6/05/20 – 1 (also hospital number reduced by an unspecified amount)

*³ Recovered rates are not reported officially by the DoH or HPSC in the above links, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data supplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting.

Recovered statistics are only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed. Updated on 15/04/20 - The WHO reporting criteria has been changed recently to eliminate the 2 test requirement before reporting as recovered, now an outcome report is sent within one month of initial notification or when an outcome is known, the available health outcomes are either “recovered/healthy”, “not recovered", “death", “unknown" or “other", weather this helps create more accurate recovery numbers or skews them further is yet to be seen.

*⁴ Due to the above issue with reporting of recovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

*⁵ From 24/04/20 probable deaths are included in the official death figures, this is to comply with the WHO definition of COVID-19 deaths issued on the 16th and adopted in Europe by the ECDC yesterday, this is in compliance with what is known as the International Statistical Classification of Diseases known as the ICD-10, as a result a new column has been added into the charts to separate confirmed and suspected COVID-19 deaths – see this post for an explanation on this change. As a result of this change in reporting the CFR is skewed as a corresponding number of cumulative case numbers is not currently part of the official records.

There should be a formal exam of some sort. It is not right to accept that teachers assess their own students without moderation.

Having said that, it might be sufficient to have one maths paper and one English paper, since all students must take these. Perhaps a few other subjects taken by most students. Social distances can be achieved by using more classrooms for the exams with increased invigilation.

The universities could help by reducing the number of courses on offer, and allow students to move to more specialist choices later in the year, following an appropriate exam. There will be fewer foreign students so more room for local ones.

They need to think outside the box.

Also quite interesting, in a similar vein to your own post :)

I also want to tack on: This paper does not suggest these were 'infective particles'. They could just as easily have been inactivated by exposure to sunlight/UV/Heat. This was not grown in cell culture.

The fat shamers always amuse me. Yes it's an extreme risk factor for Covid (and a risk factor in general!) but does anyone else always get the tone off these folks they don't really care they just like to give people a lecture? I was 16 stone 4 years ago and have got it down to 11 stone and counting, I'm more proud of that considering I tend to comfort eat than I would be if I was a slim person who has no trouble with their weight. I'm now well within my personal healthy weight range but do I now look down on overweight people? Do I hell.

Do you think the general public felt reassured following that exchange?

The entire motivation for the question and her confrontational attitude was to stoke up fear and mistrust in the general public. It's disingenuous to suggest that lack of preparation on his part caused that, frankly embarrassing, exchange.

Anyone see that video that keeps getting deleted from social media and youtube why are they doing this just makes it seem so fishy that they would keep deleting it ive seen someone post the same video 4 different times today and it keeps getting deleted makes it so supicious to keep deleting it its an interview with a PhD doctor whos name has been blackened by big pharma? It just proves were filtered to what they want us to see and hear find it so weird that they go to the effort of taking it down constantly.

Honestly not trying to have a go at you but it is really worrying that so many people haven't understood yet that the number of positive cases means very little. We've without a doubt had far more positive cases than the confirmed cases figure so there can't be any conclusions drawn from it, positive or negative.

Everybody knows we have at least 5 times the number of cases. That is not in doubt. However, as the confirmed cases drop it is my opinion that this also applies to unconfirmed cases. This is backed up by our level of testing. Therefore let's celebrate drop in confirmed cases as a proxy for all cases.

Edit: Can people stop nitpicking ever post on here. Thanks

Thomas Ryan spelling it out pretty clearly on The Tonight Show. We have thousands of active cases still walking around and people are beginning to think it's mission accomplished and making noises about the economy. Even though going back to easing restrictions right now will inevitably lead to a second surge, second lockdown and even more damage to the economy in the long term.

There's conspiracies and then there's taking down misinformation videos that the many thickos in the general population will pay attention to and thus endanger themselves and the population at large. See Trump's genius injecting bleach theory.

With the junior cert not taking place, there would be extra space and just hire extra invigilators. Oh masks too lots of them.

615 deaths and 10,500 cases in Brazil this evening. By current growth it will be at USA levels very soon

It's always shocking how quickly this erupts in countries

Was anybody listening to Prof. Tomas Ryan tonight on the tonight show, he speaks so much sense. Basically the phased easing of restrictions has not got a hope in hell of working if we dont have people wearing masks, test results back in 48 hours and contact tracing. He is very worried about the total lack of science behind the document.

I started by quoting worldometer active cases. Got jumped on. Added that it was confirmed cases. Got jumped on. Then agreed with a poster that the real number of course is higher. Got jumped on. Said in my opinion the confirmed number is probably going the same direction as the unconfirmed cases.

I'm sorry i tried to put some positive news into this thread.
