It's all relative to what you use to calculate the inflation. But for a story like that he picked a bad one, in my opinion.

    The Price Measures
$170 in 1850 has a relative price worth of $5,796.51 today using the Consumer Price Index (CPI)
$170 in 1850 has a relative price worth of $4,201.74 today using the GDP Deflator.

The Wage, Income, Household Expenditure Measures
$170 in 1850 has a relative wage of $46,386.14 paid to an Unskilled Worker today.
$170 in 1850 has a relative wage of $109,218.03 paid to paid to a Production Worker today.
$170 in 1850 has a relative Per Capita GDP of $100,136.99 today.

    The Output Measure
$170 in 1850 would be the same proportion of output as measured by GDP that $1,418,616.74 is today.
For the definitions of the indexes go to The Indexes Used.
