can you treat cedar wood with protim?

Hi all, ive used cedar wood to make an outside bench. just wondering whats best to treat it with? its extremely dry and light. can you treat cedar wood with protim to help protect from the elements? And how many coats would do etc?? Thanks

Until it weathers I'd imagine Protim (or any organic solvent based preservative) would leave a residue which might transfer to clothing, if not a residue at least a smell. Cedar is naturally resistant to rot; in the past I've treated the end grain of iroko cladding with a mix of turps (or white spirit at a fraction of the cost) and boiled linseed oil. This helps to "seal" the open end grain and prevent it wicking up moisture. You could do this with your cedar- it certainly won't do any harm and is a cheap option.
