"The sale of menthol cigarettes will be banned in the Republic of Ireland from Wednesday.

Health Minister Simon Harris said the purpose of the ban is to ensure that cigarette and tobacco products for sale can no longer include ingredients that would make smoking “more palatable”."

I was often in support of the restrictions the government placed on us in response to this pandemic primarily because it would ensure our community safety. We're all in this storm together and we should try and keep each other safe.

Now I don't want to go too far down the rabbit hole of "mah freedoms are being eroded" like the knuckle heads in 'Murica but the ban on menthol cigarettes is just unacceptable. Anyone puffing away in their home is not going to harm anyone because smoking menthol cigarettes is not contagious!

South Africa pulled this same manoeuvre and it did not go down well at all, the country is largely up in arms against the lockdown because the restrictions were nonsensical. Items such as hot food were banned, e-commerce was banned (it has since been lifted) and cigarettes were banned.

Banning cigarettes is not going to automagically fix the lungs of smokers, the damage has already been done. Just what the hell is the thinking behind this?
